T.O.P Candidly Discusses Past Mistakes, 'Squid Game 2' Casting, Departure From BIGBANG, And More

Former BIGBANG member T.O.P sat down for an interview for the first time in 11 years.

On January 15, T.O.P participated in an interview where he spoke candidly about his recent project “Squid Game 2,” his departure from BIGBANG, and more.

When asked how he come to participate in “Squid Game 2,” T.O.P said, “I first received an audition offer through the production company. Frankly speaking, I had a lot of concerns when I saw the character of Thanos. It was because of my past mistakes and the parts where I had to confront my own shame. I worried a lot, thinking that my image might become permanently associated with this. But somehow, I felt that being given such a role, almost like it was fate, might have a deeper meaning. So, I filmed an audition video and sent it to the production company. The director liked it and arranged a meeting with me.”

Regarding rumors of nepotism being involved in his casting, T.O.P shared, “Rather than feeling wronged, I was more sad by the thought that I might be causing harm to such a big and remarkable project. I also felt incredibly apologetic to the senior actors who were misunderstood because of me.”

When asked how he created his character Thanos, T.O.P explained, “Thanos is a character that is exaggerated in a cartoonish way. He is a bit dim-witted, pathetic, and a failed hip hop loser. He is also simple-minded and ignorant. These traits are reflected in scenes like the one where he raps during the ‘Red Light, Green Light’ game. From that slightly ridiculous and bizarre rap scene onward, his character starts to take shape.”

Regarding the controversy over his performance, the actor remarked, “Of course, I believe that the likes and dislikes regarding the character are something I must accept. It is not my place to speak carelessly about that. I will just humbly accept everything as it is.”

When asked if he ever imagines reuniting with the BIGBANG members, T.O.P humbly said, “I do imagine it a lot—[situations where] we give each other blessings… Honestly, I just carry a lifelong sense of guilt. I left because I felt I had no right to stay. All I feel is that I’m just deeply sorry.”

T.O.P shared, “My 30s felt like lost time. During that period, I endured intense shame and self-contempt, spending time reflecting deeply on myself. I found healing through creating music, and I want to share that music with others. If I were to imagine my 40s, I hope to live as a responsible and stable man, just like any ordinary young person in Korea. I plan to focus on maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and fostering positive thoughts.” He added, “I want to live a life where, when I wake up in the morning, there are no negative articles about me on the news portals.”
