(LEAD) Court denies arrest warrant for Seungri on embezzlement, pimping charges
(ATTN: RECASTS headline, lead; UPDATES with more details throughout)
SEOUL, May 14 (Yonhap) — A local court refused Tuesday to issue an arrest warrant against former BIGBANG member Seungri, who faces embezzlement and pimping charges, in connection with a police probe into a sex and drug scandal surrounding a nightclub in southern Seoul.
The Seoul Central District Court said there is “room for dispute” over his alleged embezzlement and there is little concern that he could destroy evidence.
The 28-year-old singer is alleged to have arranged sex services for Japanese investors in 2015, together with his business partner Yoo In-suk, a former head of Yuri Holdings Co. He is also suspected of paying for prostitution services in 2015.
They face allegations of embezzling about 530 million won (US$445,700) in total from Burning Sun, a club in southern Seoul for which the singer once worked, in 2016.
The court also rejected the arrest warrant against Yoo.
Earlier in the day, a local court held hearings for them over the allegations. Seungri has denied the allegations.
Burning Sun stands at the center of the sex and drug scandals involving Seungri and other K-pop stars. The club closed down in February after it came under investigation over drug use, sexual violence and corrupt ties with district police.
The scandal started last November after the club’s security staff beat up a customer who claimed he tried to protect a woman who was manhandled by a club employee. He was beaten by the club’s officials and police officers as an attacker.
The case has brought to the fore several crimes including drug trafficking and sexual assaults that were allegedly committed at the club.
Seungri had served as an inside board director of the club and actively promoted it on TV and online.
Initially, he said he did not directly engage in the club’s management, but later he announced his retirement from the K-pop industry in a gesture of taking responsibility for the suspicions.
Seungri is also one of the entertainers who allegedly shared sex videos of about 10 women secretly filmed by now-jailed singer Jung Joon-young in a mobile chat room.
The latest scandals involving K-pop stars have sent shockwaves across the country. In March, President Moon Jae-in ordered a thorough investigation into a snowballing drug and sex scandal involving K-pop stars and other cases in which the truth has not been fully uncovered.

Court Dismisses Pretrial Detention Warrant Requests For Seungri And Yoo In Suk

Court Dismisses Pretrial Detention Warrant Requests For Seungri And Yoo In Suk
The court has dismissed requests for pretrial detention warrants for Seungri and former CEO of Yuri Holdings Yoo In Suk. Yoo In Suk worked with Seungri on several businesses including the club Burning Sun, and he is also described as an influential figure in the controversial group chatrooms.
On May 14, Seungri and Yoo In Suk attended questioning to determine the validity of requests by the police for their pretrial detention warrants. These warrants allow for a suspect to be detained for longer than 48 hours.
The suspicions listed on the requests included mediating prostitution services, embezzlement under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Economic Crimes, and violation of the Food Sanitation Act. The warrant request for Seungri also included suspicions of purchasing prostitution services.
That evening, Judge Shin Jong Yeol of the Seoul Central District Court announced the dismissal of the requested pretrial detention warrants.
In relation to Seungri’s case, he explained, “There is room for dispute in regards to the main suspicion, which is embezzlement. It is also difficult to recognize a reason for detention, such as potential destruction of evidence, in regards to the remaining suspicions.”
Previously, pretrial detention warrants were issued for Jung Joon Young and Choi Jong Hoon, who were also members of the group chatrooms.

Seungri did not take questions from reporters as he entered the courtroom at the Seoul Central District Court at around 10 a.m.
Seungri is suspected of procuring prostitutes for parties he organized in 2015, misappropriating funds worth 530 million won from the Burning Sun club in 2016 and misrepresenting his bar Monkey Museum as a restaurant. Police also suspect he bought sexual services in 2015.
Yoo In-suk, CEO of Yuri Holdings, which he co-founded with Seungri, also attended an arrest warrant hearing in connection with charges of arranging prostitution and embezzlement of company funds.
Seungri is believed to have denied all accusations, while Yoo reportedly admitted to some of the charges.
After the hearing, which lasted two hours and 20 minutes, the two were taken to a detention facility at the Jungnang Police Station.
A decision is expected by Wednesday morning at the latest.

Police Reportedly Find Evidence That Seungri Received Prostitution Services At Least 3 Times

Police Reportedly Find Evidence That Seungri Received Prostitution Services At Least 3 Times
Seungri is suspected of having paid for prostitution services at least three times.
On May 13, Channel A’s “News A” reported that the police have found through their investigation that Seungri purchased prostitution services at least three times or more, including calling a woman who worked at an adult entertainment establishment to his home.
The police have secured testimony from a waitress at an adult entertainment establishment who said that Seungri received prostitution services in 2015 at places such as his home.
Seungri is continuing to deny the suspicions, stating that the woman was someone he knew before and it was not prostitution.
However, while looking into the accounts of staff at the adult entertainment establishment, they found that Seungri’s side had paid money.
The police previously submitted a request for a pretrial detention warrant for Seungri on suspicions such as mediating and receiving prostitution services, embezzlement under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Economic Crimes, and violation of the Food Sanitation Act.
The decision on whether or not the warrant will be issued is planned to be announced on the evening of May 14 or early morning of May 15.
