BIGBANG 빅뱅 Biography

About BIGBANG 빅뱅

BIGBANG (Korean: ??; often stylized as BIGBANG) is a South Korean boy band formed by YG Entertainment. Leader G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Daesung, and Seungri officially debuted as a five-member group on August 19, 2006.

Labeled as the "Nation's Boy Band,"[4] the members’ involvement in composing and producing their own music, most notably G-Dragon’s, has earned the group respect and praise from the music industry.[5] They currently hold the record for being the all-time best-selling artist in Cyworld.[6]

Predominantly a hip hop group, BIGBANG found success with their breakthrough hit “Lies,” which stayed at number one on major Korean music charts for a record-breaking seven consecutive weeks.[7] The group received the Song of the Year award at the 2007 Mnet Korean Music Festival.[8]

BIGBANG’s follow up releases furthered their success and popularity, spawning chart-topping hits “Last Farewell” and “Haru Haru.” After receiving the Artist of the Year award from the 2008 Mnet Korean Music Festival,[9] the group expanded their endeavors to Japan, winning three awards at the 9th MTV Video Music Awards Japan.[10]

Amidst their Japanese promotions, the members branched out to do solo activities; Taeyang and G-Dragon released solo albums, G-Dragon and T.O.P formed a sub-unit, Seungri and Daesung acted in musicals and hosted variety shows, and T.O.P became a highly acclaimed film star.

After a two-year hiatus in South Korea, BIGBANG reunited in 2011 with their album Tonight. Promotions, however, were cut short when multiple members encountered legal issues. By the end of the year, BIGBANG emerged as the inaugural Best Worldwide Act winner at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards.[11]

Three months after their win in Europe, BIGBANG released their most successful physical album, Alive, the first Korean album to chart on Billboard 200,[12] before embarking on their first ever world tour which concluded in early 2013.

History

2000–2005: Formation

Prior to the group's debut, a few of the members were already exposed to the entertainment industry. G-Dragon and Taeyang were the first ones to receive training under YG Entertainment at the age of eleven. They were child actors/stars first cast as the younger version of YG duo, Jinusean in their music video "A-YO". Mesmerized by the experience of being cast in a hip hop music video, both of the children made the decision to cast into YGE, even though they were rejected in the beginning.[13] The duo released two tracks under the name GDYB, and were often featured in label mate Wheesung, Gummy, Perry, Masta Wu, and Se7en's albums and music videos. One of their well-known pieces is "Unfold to Higher Place", featuring Perry and Gummy.[14][15] G-Dragon also participated in promotional activities with YG Family which consisted mostly all of YG label mates. The young trainees had planned to release an album together, but was later pushed aside as YGE had decided to debut an idol group with them participating.

T.O.P was an underground rapper[16] under the stage name "Tempo". One of his most popular track was "Buckwild" with NBK Gray.[17] G-Dragon contacted T.O.P, with whom he was childhood friends, when YG Entertainment was scouting for candidates to create a boy group.[18] The pair recorded several demos and sent them to Yang Hyun-suk, who later asked T.O.P to audition. However, he was rejected by the record label because he was deemed too "chubby" to fit the "idealistic version" of an idol. Six months later, he was recruited after losing weight. T.O.P reportedly lost twenty kg (44 lbs) in forty days.

Seungri was a leader of a local dance team in his hometown, Gwangju. He first appeared on the reality television series Let's Cokeplay: Mnet Battle Shinhwa, a show in which idol group Shinhwa search for members to make up the "second-generation Shinhwa". His lack of vocal skills did not charm the panel and led to his elimination from the Top 4. He then auditioned and was accepted to train under YG, but in BIGBANG's Documentary series, it was revealed his position was in jeopardy but he later impressed Yang Hyun-suk and made the cut. At the time, Seungri competed against another trainee, Hyunseung (now of BEAST fame), who was cut from BIGBANG. Hyunseung, who went under the homonym of So-1, meaning "wish" in Korean, was shown in 10 out of 11 episodes but was cut from the final episode because Hyun-suk felt that he was not ready and needed more time.

Daesung was recruited in an open audition. He is well known for his strong singing ability. He was trained under Wheesung's supervision. Before the debut of BIGBANG, he was diagnosed with vocal fold nodules, caused by strain on the vocal cords.

2006–2007: Debut

BIGBANG held their debut on August 19, 2006 at the Gymnastics Arena in Seoul Olympic Park during the YG Family 10th Year Concert.[19] On September 23, 2006, the group had their debut performance on television broadcast.

Following the performance, the group's first single, Bigbang, was released. It contained the songs "We Belong Together", featuring labelmate Park Bom; "A Fool's Only Tears" (Korean: ???? ??; Revised Romanization: Nunmulppunin Babo); and "This Love", an adaptation of the American rock band Maroon 5 song, rewritten and performed by G-Dragon.[20] The single went on to sell nearly 40,000 copies.[21] The second single, BigBang Is V.I.P, was released in September, eventually topping 32,000 copies sold.[21] Their last single, Bigbang 03, followed, with final sales nearing 40,000 copies.[21] At the end of December 2006, BIGBANG held their very first concert, The Real. The following month, their debut album, Since 2007, was released, selling 48,000 copies by the end of February 2007.[21]

2007–2008: Breakthrough success and Japanese debut

On February 8, 2007, BIGBANG released their live concert album, The First / Real Live Concert, which sold 30,000 copies by the end of the year.[22] The group also began their Want You tour, visiting five cities: Incheon, Daegu, Changwon, Jeonju and Busan.[23] Their first mini-album, Always, was also released in 2007, and marked several changes for the group. Though previously already writing and composing, the group has decided to take more control over their music. G-Dragon composed and wrote most of the tracks included in their first mini-album including the title single, "Lies" (Korean: ???; Revised Romanization: Geojitmal).[24] The mini-album also saw the introduction of electronic music for BIGBANG. Reception was fairly positive, most notably in regards to the song "Lies", which critics described as "through the roof".[25] Released as the lead single, it became their first number one hit. The album itself sold 87,000 copies.[24]

Their second mini-album, Hot Issue, released that same year, followed its predecessor's success: the lead-single, "Last Farewell", (Korean: ??? ??; Revised Romanization: Majimak Insa) topped various charts, including the Juke-On's chart for eight consecutive weeks.[26] It also garnered the "Song of the Month (Digital Music)" award from Cyworld. Tickets for their BIGBANG Is Great concert were also reportedly sold out in just nearly 10 minutes.[27][28]

At the end of 2007, it was reported that members of the band were hospitalized from over-performing and exhaustion,[30] halting their promotional activities. Reports were later released that BIGBANG's albums and singles were in very high demand, causing the record company to reprint and repackage them for re-release.[31] Riding on the success of their mini-album, the group collected numerous awards, including "Best Male Group" and "Song of The Year" from the 2007 Mnet Asian Music Awards.[32] They later received the "Artist of the Year" award from the 17th Seoul Music Awards.[33] The group earned a total of ?12 billion ($10.6 million) by year's end.[34]

As 2007 came to a close, BIGBANG ventured overseas to Japan. Their first Japanese extended play, For the World, released in early 2008,[35] charted at number 10 on the Oricon chart with a little promotion only.[36] The group also held a concert at the JCB Hall in Tokyo Dome City. BIGBANG returned to South Korea after their promotions in Japan ended. Although group activities were delayed due to solo projects, their third mini-album of 2008, Stand Up, was released. Featuring Daishi Dance and the Korean rock-band No Brain, Stand Up exceeded the 100,000 mark in sales. "Day By Day" (Korean: ????; Revised Romanization: Haru Haru), the lead single, topped several online charts and held the number 1 position for six consecutive weeks.[29] Following the lead single's success, other songs also charted within the Top 20, with "Heaven" reaching the second spot, "Oh My Friend" hitting the ninth spot, "A Good Man" at number 12, and "Lady" peaking at number 16 – a total of five songs in the Top 20 for the group.[37]

During the release of their Korean materials, BIGBANG released the Japanese song, Number 1, from their album of the same name, performing the song on Japanese radio programs and TV shows, the album peaked at number three on the Japan's Oricon daily album chart. Their Korean follow-up album, Remember, also released in 2008, yielded the number 1 single, "Sunset Glow" (Korean: ????; Revised Romanization: Byulkeun Noeul). "Strong Baby", performed solely by Seungri, was released as the second single. The album went on to sell over 200,000 copies.[37] BIGBANG received their second "Artist of the Year" award from the 2008 Mnet Asian Music Awards.[38] At the end of 2008, it was reported that BIGBANG earned a total of ?36 billion ($24.5 million).[34]

2009–2010: Solo activities

While the group was on a break in early 2009, the members pursued solo activities. They reunited to collaborate with 2NE1, their label's new girl group who had been dubbed as "The Female BIGBANG",[39] for the song "Lollipop". A music video was also filmed for promotion. Initially used to promote a cellphone, "Lollipop" reached the number one spot on various online charts.[40] BIGBANG also released their third endorsement digital single "So Fresh, So Cool" to promote the beer brand "Hite", although Seungri wasn't in the commercial due to the fact he was not of drinking age.[41] Their first self-titled full-length Japanese album was released under Universal Music in August 2009 and was promoted with two singles: My Heaven and Gara Gara Go!! (???? GO!!?).[42][43] My Heaven, a Japanese translation of their Korean single, "Heaven" (Korean: ??; Revised Romanization: Cheonguk) from Stand Up, was composed by Japanese composer Daishi Dance[23] and debuted at number 3 on the Oricon Music Chart.[44] "Gara Gara Go!" charted at the fifth spot[45] and the album itself peaked at number 3.[45] After their return to Korea, the members went back to their solo activities. On August 18, G-Dragon released his debut album, Heartbreaker, promoting it with the album's title track. The album went on to win the "Album of the Year" at the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards, selling over 210,000 units.[46] Taeyang released two digital singles, "Where U At?" and "Wedding Dress" to promote his second album released in 2010.[47] T.O.P joined the cast of the Korean thriller drama Iris, playing the assassin Vick.[48] Daesung and Seungri both pursued various individual activities in acting and hosting. They later reunited to record the song "Koe wo Kikasete" for the Japanese drama Ohitorisama ( ?????? One Person?).[23][49][50] The song was later released as a single, peaking at #4.[51]

For several days in January 2010, BIGBANG performed their 2010 BIGBANG Concert Big Show[52] in the Seoul Olympic Stadium.[53] The following month, they embarked on their Electric Love tour in Japan.[54] Although no official albums were recorded, 2010 saw the release of several singles for the group with promotional ties. The release of "Lollipop Part 2" in February, the follow-up to their single, "Lollipop"' with 2NE1, was used to coincide with promotions for LG Cyon's Lollipop phone.[55] The single also reached number one on digital charts.[56] Their next single, Tell Me Goodbye, was recorded for the Japanese re-release of Korean drama Iris.[57] The song proved to be popular and gained favorable reviews,[57] winning the "Song of the Year" award at the 52nd Japan Record Awards.[58] Additionally, tying in with the 2010 World Cup, the group released the song "Shout of the Reds" featuring the Korean rock band Transfixion and ice skater Kim Yu-na.[59]

For most of the year, the members individually promoted their own solo works and solo activities,[60] including the release of the GD & TOP unit with their collaboration album and the release of Seungri's first mini-album entitled VVIP.[61] BIGBANG also won several notable awards, including the Best 5 New Artists award from the 24th Japan Gold Disc Awards[62] as well as the "Best New Artist" award.[63] Near the end of May, the group received the awards for "Best Pop Video" and "Best New Artist" from the MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2010.[64] They released their latest Japanese single Beautiful Hangover on August 25, 2010.[65]

2011: Tonight and MTV EMA

After nearly two-year hiatus as a full group, BIGBANG returned to South Korea with their 2011 Big Show concert.[66] They also showcased songs from their latest extended play Tonight,[67] which went on to become a chart-topper upon its release on many Korean music charts.[68] The album also became the very first K-pop album to reach the Top 10 on US iTunes chart and is the only non-English language album in the Top 100.[69] The album had a pre-sale order of 10,000 copies in Cyworld, beating the record set by TVXQ's 6,500 copies back in 2008.[70] Aside from shattering records for their mini-album preorders, BIGBANG achieved an "all-kill" on the top real-time charts in South Korea (Soribada, Melon, Dosirak, Bugs and Cyworld) shortly after the release. Over-all reception for the extended play has been positive, with Choi Jun of Asiae complimenting the group's new direction in their music, acknowledging that during the two years hiatus, the group's "style and musical sensibility [had] deepened."[71] Seven days after the album's release, it was reported that BIGBANG had already earned ?7 billion (USD$6.2 million).[72] In just a week, 100,000 copies of the album were sold.[73] Its lead-single of the same name became a chart-topper on the Gaon Chart.[74]

After promotions for Tonight was finished, BIGBANG released a special edition album with two new tracks: "Love Song" and "Stupid Liar". "Love Song"'s music video on YouTube gained 2 million views within just two days.[75] The group kicked off their Love & Hope Tour in May of the same year.[76]

BIGBANG won the 2011 MTV EMA's "Best Worldwide Act" award as representatives of the Asia-Pacific region with over 58 million votes.[77] All five members were present at the awards show to receive the award, making it especially memorable since it was Daesung and G-Dragon's first public appearance since Daesung's car accident and G-Dragon's accused marijuana scandal. On November 29, the group also won the award for "Best Music Video" award with their "Love Song" music video at the 2011 Mnet Asian Music Awards.

YG Entertainment celebrated its 15th anniversary by putting on the 2011 YG Family Concert Tour, which opened its first show on December 3 in Seoul, South Korea. BIGBANG's member Daesung made his first stage appearance since his car accident involving the death of a motorcyclist in late May there.[78]

BIGBANG released their third Greatest Hits album The Best of BIGBANG on December 14, which contained a Japanese version of their all-time #1 hit "Haru Haru". The album topped the Oricon Daily chart on its first day of release and went on to sell over 14,000 copies in the first week, proving the group's consistent popularity. It was reported that BIGBANG earned ?88 billion (USD$77.5 million) in 2011 even though they had just promoted for half a year. The earnings included BIGBANG's revenue concert for SBS's BIGBANG Show, their 2011 Big Show Concert and their Love and Hope Tour in Japan.

2012–2013: Alive and first world tour

Beginning from January 20, 2012, YG Entertainment began releasing teasers for BIGBANG's 5th mini-album Alive, which was released in both digital and physical formats on February 29.[79] Preorders for Alive amounted to 260,000 copies in two weeks.[80] Its lead single, Blue, was released a week prior to the album's release and has reached the number one position on all major domestic charts.[81] The mini-album was a commercial success, selling in excess of 200,000 copies in its first month of release.[82] Internationally, BIGBANG obtained 5 spots out of the Top 10 on Billboard K-pop's Hot 100 and charted at 150 on Billboard 200, making them the first Korean artist with a Korean album to do so.[83] Their popularity also boosted them onto the Billboard Social 50, entering at #24. Since the release of Alive, BIGBANG has received recognition from notable sites such as Time magazine,[84] and a photo was featured on the Grammy Awards homepage.[85]

The album release coincided with their annual concert, Big Show 2012, held at Seoul Olympic Park Stadium from March 2–4 to a sold-out crowd of 40,000 fans.[86] This marked the official kick off of their first world tour BIGBANG Alive Galaxy Tour 2012, in partnership with Live Nation.[87] It was directed by renowned choreographer Laurieann Gibson, with BIGBANG performing at 21 cities over 13 countries.[86] Concert footage from Big Show was broadcast in 160 countries through MTV World Stage, which pushed the promotion for their world tour.

On March 6, 2012, the music video for "Fantastic Baby" was released on YouTube. This is currently the band's most popular song, having received more than one hundred eleven million views on YouTube.[88]

The Japanese version of Alive was released on March 28 both digitally and physically, with 2 additional Japanese tracks. Included with the physical copy of their album was a bonus Japanese version of their hit song, Haru Haru.[89] It sold over 23,000 copies on its first day of release and peaked at #2 on the Oricon charts. It eventually sold over 100,000 copies in its first month and has since been certified gold by the RIAJ. Japanese promotions began with a performance at 2012's Springroove Festival alongside top American and Japanese hip hop artists. BIGBANG was the first Korean act to be invited along with label-mates 2NE1.[90]

Following the success of their comeback, BIGBANG released a special edition album titled Still Alive, on June 3. It featured four new tracks including two new Korean tracks of which their lead single was titled Monster, as well as Korean remakes of the two additional tracks in the Japanese version of Alive. The album sold over 100,000 copies in its first month of release. A special Monster edition of their Japanese Alive album was also released on June 20, following its Korean counterpart. The success of their special edition album further boosted the group's global recognition, peaking at #11 on the Billboard Social 50.

Throughout May and June, the group focused on the Japanese leg of their world tour, visiting cities such as Nagoya, Yokohama, Osaka, Saitama and Fukuoka. A shorter Chinese leg of the tour succeeded the Japanese leg from late July to early August, with BIGBANG visiting Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing. The group then toured South East Asia from late September to October, touring Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan, the Philippines and Malaysia. The group then began their American leg of their tour in early November, visiting New Jersey and Los Angeles in the United States and Lima, Peru. There was initially a stop planned in Brazil, but this was later cancelled. After several performances in the Americas, the group went back to Japan for their "Special Final in Dome Tour," stopping at some of the largest stadiums in Japan including Osaka Dome, Tokyo Dome and Fukuoka Dome. BIGBANG performed in Hong Kong and England in December 2012. One concert was scheduled in London, England but another date was added to their tour due to popular demand. The group concluded the tour with concerts in Osaka on January 12 and 13 and a three night stint at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Seoul on January 25, 26, and 27, 2013.

On November 30, 2012, BIGBANG received a total of three awards at the 14th Mnet Asian Music Awards, including Best Male Group and Artist of the Year. Leader, G-Dragon, also received the Best Male Solo award at the event.[91]

BIGBANG 빅뱅 Awards and Nominations

BIGBANG 빅뱅 Awards and Nominations

BIGBANG, a five-member South Korean boy band formed under YG Entertainment, has won numerous awards and recognitions since their Korean debut in 2006 and Japanese debut in 2009. BIGBANG won most of their awards from South Korea, but they have also garnered many international awards and nominations from both Asia and Europe, notably the "Best Worldwide Act" award from the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards, received after their two-year hiatus from the K-Pop scene.[1]

The group's breakthrough hit was "Lies," which earned BIGBANG their very first music program win, from KBS's Music Bank in September 2007, and high acclaim from music industry critics and professionals. The song garnered five more awards from music programs and topped all Korean music charts for seven consecutive weeks, a feat only achieved by Seo Taiji and Boys before, making it the "Song of the Month" for August and September. "Lies" won BIGBANG their first major music award, the "Song of the Year" award from the 2007 Mnet KM Music Festival. They were then labelled as the "National Brothers" by the South Korean media and the general public.[2]

The group was further catapulted to a higher national status when their second hit song, "Last Farewell," was released. The song won BIGBANG seven music program wins and topped all music charts for eight consecutive weeks, knocking themselves off from their own previous achievement. They were then named as the "National Boy Band," a national status that was never been given to any boy band prior to them.

BIGBANG has also gained various recognitions for their unique fashion during their live performances. Their fashion was imitated by many Korean teenagers and was then called as the "BIGBANG fashion," a fashion consisting of a scarf, high-top sneakers, and shades. The group has also earned multiple domestic and international praises for their involvement in their own music.

BIGBANG 빅뱅 G-Dragon Biography

About G-Dragon

G-Dragon_2012.jpgKwon Ji Yong (Korean: ???; Chinese: ???/???; born August 18, 1988), better known by his stage name G-Dragon (Korean: ????), is a South Korean rapper, singer-songwriter, lyricist, producer, model, and fashion designer.

At the age of eight he was under contract at SM Entertainment, but he decided to change record labels. After 6 years as a trainee under the record label YG Entertainment, G-Dragon officially debuted as the leader and one of two rappers for the Korean group BIGBANG. G-Dragon has been involved with writing, composing, and producing many of BIGBANG's hit tracks, including "Lies", "Last Farewell", and "Haru Haru".

He released his debut solo album, Heartbreaker (2009), which yielded the number-one single of the same name. The album went on to become one of the most successful albums of the year, garnering sales of over 200,000 copies and winning the Mnet Asian Music Awards for Album of the Year. Heartbreaker also sparked major controversies for the artist, including accusations of plagiarism. After almost a year of hiatus, G-Dragon and bandmate, T.O.P collaborated to record and release the album GD & TOP (2010). The album saw the release of three singles: "High High", "Oh Yeah", and "Knock Out", all of which have charted within the top three positions of the Gaon chart, with "High High" becoming a chart-topper. In 2012, G-Dragon released his second solo album, "One of a Kind", with hit singles "One of a Kind", "Crayon", and "That XX". Recently in 2013, he released his second full album in four years Coup D'Etat.

1988–2009: Early life and debut with BIGBANG

Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, Kwon Jiyong began his career at age five as part of the group Little Lula.[3] After releasing a Christmas album, the group's contract was terminated by their record company, to which Kwon described as "shock[ing]". Although he vowed to his mother that he "wouldn't do it [becoming a singer] again", Kwon Jiyong was scouted by SM Entertainment while on a ski trip with his family.[4] He was a trainee under the record label for five years (8–13 years old), specializing in dance before he left as he was unclear about what he wanted to do.[3]

In third grade, Jiyong was introduced to the American rap group Wu-Tang Clan by a friend. Inspired by their music, he developed an interest in rapping and began taking classes.[3] Under People Crew's[5] tutelage, he participated in the release of the Korean hip-hop Flex album in 2001, becoming the youngest Korean rapper at just 13 years old. Although he wrote his own lyrics for the song, he admitted that his English was weak and the story behind the lyrics actually meant "I'm young, but I'm the best".[3] Kwon Jiyong caught the interest of Sean of the hip-hop duo Jinusean from YG Entertainment, who later recommended him to CEO Yang Hyun Suk. After signing a contract with the record label. Kwon Jiyong spent the first year cleaning the studio for the other artists in the record label and fetching them water bottles during dance practice.[3] He and another trainee Dong Young-bae, originally planned to debut as the hip-hop duo GDYB, with him choosing the stage name of G-Dragon ("Ji" is pronounced like "G", and Yong is Korean for Dragon).[4] After six years of training, Kwon made several featured appearances on other artists' albums and even released several singles with Dong Young-bae under the name "GDYB". G-Dragon made his official debut as the leader of the group BIGBANG in 2006, after six years of training under YG Entertainment, with Dong Youngbae (who chose the stage-name Taeyang) and three other members (T.O.P, Daesung, Seungri).

The formation of the group was documented on television,[6] and though there were initially six members, one was dropped before the official debut.[4] The group's debut was fairly successful, with their first single netting in sales of over 40,000 copies.[7] It spawned several airplay singles, including "La La La", "We Belong Together" and "Forever with You" which featured label-mate Park Bom. The album also included G-Dragon's first solo song, a cover of the American alternative rock group Maroon 5's single "This Love".[6] Following the release of the group's mini-album Always in 2007, G-Dragon began to involve himself more with the production of their albums.[8] Always featured several songs composed by him, including the lead-single "Lies" (Korean: ???; Revised Romanization: Geojitmal), which became the group's first number-one hit. Their following mini-albums followed its predecessor's footsteps: Hot Issue yielded "Last Farewell" (Korean: ??? ??; Revised Romanization: Majimak Insa) while Stand Up spawned "Day by Day" (Korean: ????; Revised Romanization: Haru Haru); both singles, which were composed by him were chart-toppers.[9][10]

2009: Heartbreaker

His first official solo single, "Heartbreaker" drew controversy over similarities to the song "Right Round" by Flo Rida

(Heartbreaker Audio)

Aside from BIGBANG, G-Dragon also made several solo appearances. After helping produce Taeyang's debut album, he recorded his own version of the album's lead single "Only Look At Me" (Korean: ?????; Revised Romanization: Naman Barabwa), titled as the "Only Look At Me Part 2" to the song. The single was released digitally. Along with Taeyang and T.O.P., G-Dragon was featured on singer Lexy's song "Super Fly" for her album Rush. In May 2009, he collaborated with the Japanese boy band W-inds. for their single, "Rain Is Fallin'/Hybrid Dream".[11][12]

After Taeyang released his solo effort, G-Dragon released his debut solo album Heartbreaker, featuring collaborations with several artists, including Teddy of 1TYM, Taeyang, Kush, CL of 2NE1, and Sandara Park of 2NE1. Initially scheduled to be released in April, the album was pushed back to August[13] to coincide with his 21st (Korean years: 22nd) birthday.[14] The album marked a change in G-Dragon's appearances as he dyed his hair blonde to match its concept. Propelled by its lead-single of the same name, an electronic pop song, the album sold over 200,000 copies[15][16] and went on to win Album of the Year from the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards.[17] The second single, "Breathe", manage to chart within the Top Twenty[18] while his other songs — "The Leaders", "A Boy", "Hello", and "She's Gone" — went on to top various charts upon their release.[19] Shortly after Heartbreaker's release, G-Dragon was accused of plagiarism by Sony Music when his tracks "Heartbreaker" and "Butterfly" were alleged to be similar to Flo Rida's "Right Round" and Oasis's "She's Electric", respectively.[20][21] However, EMI, the record label that distributed "Right Round" said that they saw no similarities between these two songs.[22] On March 6, 2010, YG Entertainment announced that they personally contacted Flo Rida's representatives requesting that he feature in G-Dragon's live album, Shine a Light, to which Flo Rida accepted.[23] In support of his album, G-Dragon staged his first solo concert at the Olympic Park in December 2009. Entitled Shine a Light, the name of the concert was derived from the lyrics to his song "A Boy".[24] The concert subsequently sparked controversy following complaints of obscenity[25] and suggestive content.[26] The Korean Ministry of Health, Welfare and Family Affairs later asked the government prosecutors to investigate if G-Dragon or YG Entertainment violated laws on obscene performances in his concert.[27][28] He was found innocent and was cleared of all charges on March 15, 2010.[29]

2010–2011: GD & TOP

GD_&_T.O.P_2010.jpgIn November 2010, YG Entertainment announced the collaboration album from G-Dragon and bandmate T.O.P.[30] Preceding the release of the album, the duo held a world-wide premiere showcase for their album at Times Square in Yeongdeungpo of Seoul,[31] which was also broadcast live on YouTube.[1] To promote their album, the duo released three singles: "High High," "Oh Yeah", and "Knock Out".[32] All three singles preceded the release of the album. The singles attained commercial successes: "High High" was a chartopper[33] while "Oh Yeah" and "Knock Out" both peaked at number two and number three respectively.[34][35] The album was released on Christmas Eve, and debuted at number one on the Gaon Chart[36] with pre-orders of 200,000 copies.,[37] eventually topping 130,000 copies sold.

With a collaboration with Park Myung Soo, they created a duo called GG for the Infinite Challenge Seohae Ahn Highway Song Festival 2011. They released their song "Fired Up(????)" featuring Park Bom from 2NE1 on June 2, 2011, which became an 'All Kill' on various Korean music charts.

2012: One of a Kind

G-Dragon_2012_4.jpg

It was announced in March 2012 that G-Dragon's solo comeback would be scheduled in the later half of the year, probably in August and sometime near his birthday.[38] G-Dragon also featured in English artist Pixie Lott's upcoming Japanese album, along with fellow member T.O.P.[39]

G-Dragon released the music video for his song "One Of A Kind" from the album of the same name on August 24, 2012, on YouTube.[40] The song later earned him two "Best Hiphop / Rap Song of the Year" awards from Korean Music Awards and Rhythmer Awards. On September 1, G-Dragon released his first single "That XX". The song topped music charts immediately after release and eventually achieved "perfect all-kill" status.[41] His mini-album One of a Kind was released on September 15 digitally and on September 18 physically.[42] Upon release, the album was an immediate success in South Korea. All of the tracks occupied the top positions on all major music charts.[43] The album also places first on the Billboard World Album Chart and entered the Billboard 200 Chart at 161 for the week.[44] As of the end of 2012, the album has sold over 200,000 copies, making it the highest selling solo album in Korea since the release of Heartbreaker in 2009, also by G-Dragon.

On November 30, 2012, he won as Best Male Solo Artist at the 14th Mnet Asian Music Awards. On January 31, 2013, he also won Record of the Year award for "One Of A Kind" at the 22nd Seoul Music Awards.

2013–: Coup D'Etat

In January 2013, he was the first Korean solo Artist to embark 4 dome tour in Japan (When before replace the 3 dome tour in March) and second Korean solo artist world tour (first Bi Rain ). As the beginning, the first run in Seoul starts on March 30, 2013. Japan shows started in April, and more cities were added on later dates as they were confirmed. This tour is known as G-Dragon 2013 1st World Tour.

In April 1, 2013, YGEX announced he will release a second solo album on August 14. YGEX further announced that Grammy Award-winning musician Missy Elliott will be featured on the album.[45] Elliott previously announced in January 2013 via Twitter that she had contributed two tracks ("Chugalug", "Niliria") both of which were produced by Teddy P.[46][47]

The album, titled Coup D'état, was released in 2 parts online, on September 2 and September 5, with the full album being released September 13 featuring 2 songs that will be album only. Coup D'etat featured collaborations with a star-studded list of artists and producers which included Missy Elliott, Diplo, Baauer, Boys Noize, Sky Ferreira, Siriusmo, Zion.T, Lydia Paek, and label-mate Jennie Kim. G-Dragon and Missy Elliott performed their song "Niliria" at the KCON 2013 in LA. Tracks from Coup D'etat topped major Korean music sites such as Melon, Mnet, Bugs, Naver, and Olleh. A total of seven tracks were placed from one to seven on the Mnet charts upon release,[48] while six tracks from Coup D'etat were also placed within the top 10 of the Gaon Singles Charts with "Who You?" being number one.[49] The album also topped the iTunes charts in several countries.[50][51] The music video for "Coup D'Etat" was released on YouTube on September 1 while the music video for "Crooked" was released shortly after, on September 4.

On October 24, 2013, G-Dragon at 2013 SIA won the Style Icon Top 10. In the end, he won the 2013 Style Icon of the Year Award. He is the first solo singer to win the award undivided.[52]

He also made a song for the Infinite Challenge music contest, held on 17 October in Imjingak. The song is titled "Going to Try" (Haebolago) and is a duet with comedian Jeong Hyeong-don.[53]

On November 22, 2013, he won a total of four awards at the 15th Mnet Asian Music Awards, including Best Male Solo Artist, Best music video for "Coup D'etat", Best dance performance for "Crooked", and the highest award, Artist of The Year.[54] He's the first solo act to win the latter.[citation needed]

Public image

Described as the "most fashionable" one in his group,[58] G-Dragon's role in influencing fashion trends in South Korea have garnered him awards such as the "Style Icon of 2008"[58] and the award for "Most Influential Men of 2008" sponsored by Arena magazine.[59] Fashion icon Kang Dong Won has also acknowledged G-Dragon's influences, calling him a "fashionista".[60]

While promoting Heartbreaker, his change in hairstyle from dyeing it to blonde gained popularity among his fans and became one of the top hairstyles of the year.[61] Additionally, his constant sporting of triangular scarves became a trend among teenagers and were later nicknamed the "BIGBANG scarves".[62]

Despite his influences, G-Dragon has admitted to being self-conscious of his role as a musician, noting how he had "changed many things including the tone of my voice because I was conscious about my job when I was in front of others".[56] Aware that his public image is important when promoting his materials, G-Dragon notes that "what the public perceives of [my physical appearance] is my doing so it's my fault if I give off the wrong intention".[56] He also strongly opposes the idea of singers as "products" of the entertainment industry.[63]

On October 5, 2011, it was reported that G-Dragon was tested positive for marijuana. His urine test came back negative but a weak positive for marijuana was detected from testing the content of his hair. The tests were done in early June and the results came back in August. As it was a first offense with a minuscule amount, it resulted in an indictment and he was not charged.[64][65] He allegedly accepted an offered cigarette from a fan in Japan during a party back in May.[66] He was the only one at the party who was later tipped off to Korean authorities. He confessed that he smoked the cigarette that was offered to him, but after realizing it was not a normal cigarette, he threw it away.

The scandal caused a halt to his promotions, and YG Entertainment issued a statement that he was being given time to reflect on his mistake.[67] Because he was not charged, he did not lose any endorsers and later made his first public appearance after the scandal at the 2011 MTV EMAs with his group BIGBANG.

Musical style, lyrics and composition

Inspired by music by the Wu-Tang Clan, G-Dragon participated in the annual hip hop Flex album in 2001 at the age of 12, establishing his career as an artist.[3] During the early days of BIGBANG's career, the band was marketed predominately as a hip-hop group, though they went on to experiment with electronic music and setting it as the new music trend in Korea.[69] From previous exposure to a range of genres with BIGBANG, G-Dragon incorporated a mix of dance, hip-hop, and R&B songs into Heartbreaker.[70] During the production for the collaboration album GD & TOP, G-dragon opted for a more hip-hop sound, though he does acknowledge that R&B, acoustic, and electronic music heavily influenced it.[1]

Since becoming a solo artist, G-Dragon has maintained tight control over his music, stating that "each feeling [in creating the music] is different",[57] using his emotions to direct the lyrical content and the composition of his songs.[56] In attempts to distinguish himself from other artists and composer, G-Dragon admits to "giving twist and turn at every corner and evoking [a] different story" with each part of his music, acknowledging that although the chorus is the catchiest part of the song, he wants all the parts to his song to be remembered.[57] Prior to his establishment as a solo artist, he was also involved with the production of BIGBANG's albums, writing and composing majority of their songs.[21]

G-Dragon's contributions to his own music have garnered him praises and criticism alike. Preferring to pen lyrics that "sound like an actual story", the Korea Times have praised him as a "genius singer-songwriter",[21] though the rapper has expressed being uncomfortable with the label.[71] His effort to create melodies won him praises as one of the best composers of 2008,[21] with many pop culture critics and industry representatives choosing him as the "musician whose future they anticipate the most".[71] His rap lyrics have also placed him fourth during a vote for "Most God-like" rapper in Japan.[72] The rapper also topped Forbes listing of "Most Hardworking Idol",[73] and made into its list "Korea 2030 Power Leaders".[73]

T.O.P won the cover of 1st Look Magazine in 2011.[23] The photoshoot took place in Brooklyn, New York and was shot by renowned photographer Hong Jang Hyun. He modeled Calvin Klein's winter military jacket and black jeans. He had also filmed a video for the brand at that time.

In June 2012, T.O.P has been confirmed to star in the upcoming action film, Alumni, with actor Jo Sung-ha. He will play the son of a North Korean spy who is falsely accused.[24] Kim Yoo Jung will play T.O.P.'s little sister in the drama.[25]

2013–present

The filming of the movie Alumni took over more than a year to finish filming due to a change of the director and Choi Seung Hyun schedule with his group BIGBANG interfering. During filming of the movie T.O.P suffered an injury on the back of his hand. On September 21, T.O.P was filming a combat scene that took place near a piece of glass. He unfortunately hurt his hand on a glass fragment and is reported to have been admitted to the hospital for surgery on the same day. Filming of the movie had to be stopped for a few weeks, but despite his injury he continued to be with Bigbang throughout their world tour.[26]

The movie finished filming on January 21, 2013 in Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. The climax between five actors in the movie was filmed on January 21 in Yong-In, Gyeonggido. It was an important scene where T.O.P tried to protect his little sister and his friend. He had to show his wide range of acting abilities as he had to take care of both the action and emotions in the scene. At the end of the filming, the main actors blew out candles on a cake to celebrate the end of the filming. T.O.P said, “Everyone worked hard for a long time. I’m happy it ended well. I was happy while I was a part of this ‘Alumni’ project“. Han Ye Ri commented, “All the actors and staff worked so hard“. Yoon Je Moon commented, “I had fun filming with young actors, the young staff in a fun and youthful environment“. Jo Sung Ha added, “I had fun filming with the hoobae actors. I hope the audience has fun watching the movie.” Kim Yoo Jung expressed her disappointment that the filming was over, and said, “I wish can act with these people again.” Alumni | The Commitment was released to cinemas in October 2013.

On October 5, 2013 he won the Rookie Award at the Asia Star Awards the official party of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) for his character in Alumni. The only Korean actor that won an award in the ceremony, which gave away awards in four categories.

November 2013 saw the release T.O.P's solo single DOOM DADA which - without any promotion - peaked at #4 in the Korean charts.

In December 2013 during BIGBANG's Japanese Dome Tour, T.O.P flew to New York for a week to produce a photobook entitled FROMTOP together with by renowned photographer Hong Jang Hyun. The book saw it's release in April 2014. It was followed by a week-long exhibition at Horim Art Center in Seoul showcasing some of the book's and some additional photos in the first week of June 2014.

In the first half of 2014 T.O.P filmed Tazza The High Rollers 2 which wrapped on June 1st, 2014. The movie post-production was turned around real fast and movie promotion started as early as July 2014, followed by a press conference and the movie's VIP premiere on August 25th. Officially in the cinemas starting Sept. 3rd, 2014, the movie hit 1.000.000 viewers in only 5 days. After Chuseok Weekend the visitors had already risen to close to 1.5 Million.

2000—2008: Early beginnings and debut with BIGBANG

Taeyang's first appearance in the entertainment industry was with Maddie in the hip-hop group Jinusean's music video "A-yo".[3] The collaboration eventually lead him to successfully auditioning into the group's record label YG Entertainment, where he met fellow trainee G-Dragon and former trainee (now a member of 2PM) Jun. K. G-dragon and him were later coined as GDYB.[4] In 2003, Taeyang provided the rap verse in singer Wheesung's single "Player" on the latter's second album.[5]

the plan was scrapped by their record label. Instead, they were joined by four other trainees (T.O.P., Daesung, Seungri, and Hyun Seung) to form the group BIGBANG. The group's formation was documented on television as a documentary.[6] Before their official debut, however, Hyun Seung was dropped and their final lineup consisted of five members. Choosing the stage-name Taeyang (Korean: ??, meaning sun), Taeyang abandoned the idea of rapping to focus on singing.[7] Their first album, Since 2007, was a fair success,[8] and included Taeyang's first solo song "Ma Girl." The group achieved mainstream success with the release of the song "Lies" (Korean: ???; Revised Romanization: Geojitmal) from their 2007 mini-album Always, which topped several charts upon its release. The singles, "Last Farewell" (Korean: ??? ??; Revised Romanization: Majimak Insa) from the mini-album Hot Issue and "Day by Day" (Korean: ????; Revised Romanization: Haru Haru) from Stand Up, became chart-toppers as well.[9][10]

He later flew to Japan to promote the group's Japanese albums. After BIGBANG's activities have ended, he went back to the studio to prepare for his next solo activities. Taeyang released his first digital single "Where U At",[11] followed by another digital single, "Wedding Dress". Promotional videos were filmed for both "Where U At" and "Wedding Dress." "Wedding Dress" was voted No. 3 on an online poll for a Dutch radio station.[12]

Taeyang's first full-length album Solar was released on 1 July 2010. Two versions of this album – the "Regular Edition" and the "Deluxe Edition" – was released. The regular edition contained 11 songs, while the deluxe edition limited to 30,000 copies had 12 songs, including "Only Look at Me" and "Prayer" from Hot. On the first day Taeyang's solo album "Solar" released, 1 July, deluxe edition of the album had sold out its 30,000 circulated copies.[13] (All Sales: 120.000) The album was later released on iTunes,[14] charting at the number-two spot on the iTunes' Top R&B-Soul albums chart in the United States and number-one in Canada's, making him the first Asian musician to do so.[15] Two singles were released for promotions: "I Need A Girl" featuring bandmate G-Dragon, and "I'll Be There." At the end of 2010, I Need A Girl (4 Weeks) I'll Be There (1 Weeks) Only Look at Me (3 Weeks) Korean Song Music Chart's Win. Taeyang won the "Best Male Artist" award at the 2010 Mnet Asian Music Awards at the end of the year and the Seoul Music Awards Best Male Artist award.

At its peak, 'Rise' was #1 on iTunes R&B/SOUL Album Chart in 19 countries to include USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Russia, Hong Kong, and Denmark (top 50 in 25 countries). Rise became the third highest charting K-pop album, and also the highest charting K-pop album by a solo artist, on Billboard by debuting at #112 on Billboard Hot 200, #1 on Billboard World Albums Chart, and #1 on Heatseekers Albums Chart.[17]

August 2014 saw Taeyang embarked on his Japanese RISE tour 2014 with extra dates being added due to huge demand. The concerts wrapped on Sept 3rd, 2014 in Osaka with a guest appearance by G-Dragon for "Stay with Me".
