YONGIN, South Korea (Reuters) – Fans of K-pop boyband BIGBANG gathered on Saturday to see band leader G-Dragon return to civilian life after his discharge from military service.

G-Dragon, 31, whose real name is Kwon Ji-yong, completed almost two years of mandatory military service and was discharged at the headquarters of South Korean Army’s Ground Operations Command in Yongin, southeast of Seoul.

He was originally scheduled to be discharged from a base near the border with North Korea, an area where officials are working to contain African swine fever, which affects pigs. The switch was apparently motivated by a desire to limit traffic in the area.

He had served about a year and eight months of mandatory military service applicable to all men in South Korea, which is still technically at war with North Korea.

About 500 Chinese, Japanese and other Asian fans, some of whom waited outside the military base overnight in chilly weather, cheered as G-Dragon emerged from the building around 8 a.m.

“Thank you for waiting,” said G-Dragon, who was wearing a dark brown military uniform and beret. “I will return to my job and faithful to my work.”

After brief remarks, he entered a black van and departed as fans took photos, waved and followed the van. He then held an event nearby with 3,000 fans.

Originally a five-member band, BIGBANG, after debuting in 2006, often topped the South Korean music charts and gained a huge following before members began to enter mandatory military service in 2017.

Bandmate Seungri left the band and retired from the music industry in March after he was accused of alleged sex bribery.

G-Dragon’s sister Dami Kwon and fellow BIGBANG member T.O.P celebrated his discharge from the military!

G-Dragon was discharged on October 26 and greeted fans. Since then, both T.O.P and Dami Kwon marked his return.

T.O.P took to his personal Instagram story to share a screenshot of his conversation with G-Dragon. He wrote, “Congratulations on being discharged. Free G! Congrats.” G-Dragon responded with, “Thank you for taking care of my time during my time in the military,” and received a heart emoticon from T.O.P in return.

Dami Kwon also shared a photo of her family’s reunion now that G-Dragon has been discharged. She shared a photo of the family with the caption, “Welcome back, celebratory party. Our family is complete.” Along with G-Dragon, Dami Kwon, and their parents is Kim Min Joon, who Dami Kwon tied the knot with earlier this month.

She also shared photos of the welcome party on her Instagram story.

G-Dragon is the second member of BIGBANG to be discharged from the military following T.O.P.

On October 26 at 8 AM, G-DRAGON was discharged from the Army Ground Operations Command located in Yongin, Gyeonggido. Thousands of fans gathered at the scene to watch him being discharged.

After spotting the fans, G-DRAGON shared his thoughts by stating, “I’ve finished my duty in good health. Thank you for waiting and thank you for coming”. He also saluted while adding, “I’ll go back to my regular job and do my best”. 

G-DRAGON was enlisted to the army last year on February 27, served for 1 year and 8 months in the 3rd Infantry White Skull Division Artillery Regiment of the ROK army located in Cheorwon, Gangwon-do. He was scheduled to be discharged in Cheorwon, but the location was changed to Yongin due to the African Swine Fever detect near the borders of Cheorwon.

[OSEN=용인, 박판석 기자] Approximately 3 thousand fans and numerous reporters gathered to celebrate G-DRAGON being discharged from the army.

On October 26, G-DRAGON was discharged from the Army Ground Operations Command located in Yongin, Gyeonggido. Many fans gathered to watch G-DRAGON being discharged from early in the morning. G-DRAGON’s father also appeared at the scene.

Last year on February, G-DRAGON received 5 weeks of training in the 3rd Infantry White Skull Division Recruit Training Center of the ROK army located in Cheorwon, Gangwon-do. He was then located to the artillery regiment to serve his mandatory military service.

Over 3 thousand global fans gathered to support G-DRAGON. Fans from China, Hong Kong, and Japan visited the scene to celebrate G-DRAGON being discharged. Not only fans, but also numerous reporters visited the scene as well.

Approximately 3 thousand fans gathered in orderly manner, in front of the base and a place located near the base. After greeting the fans in front of the base, G-DRAGON is planned to greet the fans near the base as well, before he leaves the scene.

A fan from Hong Kong who visited the scene revealed that she arrived last night. She stated, “I came from Hong Kong to support G-DRAGON”. She added, “I arrived in Yongin last night at 11 PM”.

G-DRAGON’s discharge ceremony was scheduled to be held in Cheorwon but was relocated to Yongin due to the African Swine Fever which was detected near Cheorwon. The Ministry of National Defense was worried that prevention measures may be difficult if global fans and reporters gather around the area due to G-DRAGON’s discharge ceremony.

YG Entertainment also announced, “The army bases where G-DRAGON, TAEYANG, and DAESUNG are scheduled to discharge from are located in the borders where ASF was detected. The government advices not to visit the location as preventative and quarantine measures. Please refrain from visiting the scene to prevent the spread of the virus and for your own safety”.

G-DRAGON made debut as group BIGBANG back in 2006. He has since released numerous hits including ‘LIES’, ‘LAST GOODBYE’, ‘HARU HARU’, ‘FANTASTIC BABY’, ‘LOSER’, ‘BANG BANG BANG’, and ‘LET’S NOT FALL IN LOVE’. The people are paying keen attention on G-DRAGON’s discharge from the army, as he has been tremendously popular not only as a group but also as a solo artist.
