The song was released on March 13 and swept major realtime charts. As of 8 a.m. KST on March 14, “Flower Road” had topped Melon, Genie, Mnet, Soribada, Bugs, Olleh, Naver, and Monkey3 charts.

Not only is “Flower Road” excelling domestically, but it has been met with a positive response internationally as well. “Flower Road” topped the iTunes Top Songs Chart in 28 countries including New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Brazil.

As a love letter written to their fans before their enlistment, “Flower Road” was written by BIGBANG’s leader G-Dragon and oldest member T.O.P, and reflects the members’ honest feelings about their temporary hiatus. The song has become a source of comfort and happiness for their fans with lyrics like, “This is not our last, let’s meet again when the flowers bloom,” and “While following this flower road, you can rest a little and wait for us right where you are.”

With Daesung enlisting on March 13, four out of five members are now serving in the army with the exception of youngest member Seungri. He has also shared plans that he will enlist soon to minimize BIGBANG’s hiatus as much as possible.

Congratulations to BIGBANG on the achievement!

BigBang at AsiaWorld-Expo on Dec. 2, 2015 in Hong Kong, China.

“This is not the end of us / I hope we’ll meet again when the flowers are blooming,” G-Dragon says on BIGBANG’s new single “Flower Road.” Released Tuesday (Mar. 13), the digital single serves a final farewell from the Korean act to its fans ahead of a lengthy hiatus, as the band members serve in South Korea’s military.

The quintet’s first song since 2016’s duo of singles “Fxxk It” and “Last Dance,” “Flower Road” is effusive in its smooth dancepop vibe, and puts BIGBANG’s evocative vocals front and center over a melody that alternates between rhythmic guitar riffs, a clapping beat, and wailing synths. Balancing out melancholy and optimism, the track is an homage to BIGBANG’s relationship with the millions of fans around the world who have supported them for over a decade.

“Flower Road” was created while BIGBANG was working on their MADE album, and features lyrics written by G-Dragon and T.O.P. The title refers to a Korean term expressing a new, glorious journey, and refers to both the path of BIGBANG’s career as well as the lives of fans, with BIGBANG both asking fans to wait for them and also expressing an understanding if fans move on. “If you want to leave, I understand,” Daesung and Taeyang sing during the refrain. “I’ll scatter flowers on the road you’ll walk on /But if you ever miss me, please come back.”

Serving as a bookend to the group’s career so far, “Flower Road” fittingly begins and ends off with a fading shoutout of BIGBANG’s name by G-Dragon, recalling their 2008 song  “Sunset Glow.”

BIGBANG is expected to return to with new music as a group after each of the members completes their military service periods. Following this month’s enlistments of G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung, only youngest member Seungri is left in civilian life for the time being but he took to Instagram today to say he will also enlist soon. T.O.P recently began serving in public works after his original service period was cut short following the rapper’s involvement in a lawsuit based on his marijuana usage.

South Korea’s mandatory military service draft is in effect due to the country’s decades-spanning tension with North Korea following the armistice of 1953. The nearly two-year service period, either in military forces or public works (depending on a variety of factors), has affected the careers of many K-pop boy bands, though enlisting no longer serves as the guaranteed end of the road for boy bands as it did a few years ago. BIGBANG’s promise to return after fulfilling their duty follows that of acts including Shinhwa, Super Junior2PM and TVXQ!, all of whom either have members currently serving while the group remains active, or have returned to their group efforts following each of the member’s fulfilling his service.

Since 2007, BIGBANG grew to become one of K-pop’s most iconic acts, with both the group’s music as well as individual solo efforts making their marks on the Korean music industry and its international following. The group has seen two albums, Alive and MADE, chart on the Billboard 200.

“Flower Road” is available on digital music platforms including iTunes and Apple Music. Below is a clip Seungri shared on Instagram:

[TIME] K-Pop Star G-Dragon of BIGBANG Has Started Military Service. Now His Unit Is in Chaos

By CASEY QUACKENBUSH

2:10 AM EDT

In South Korea, two years of military service is obligatory for male citizens ages 18 to 35—even for K-pop superstars. But ever since G-Dragon, leader of the hit K-pop boy band BIGBANG, enlisted on Feb. 27, his army unit has been overrun with fan mail, the Korea Timesreports.

“G-Dragon is facing difficulties with fans sending too many letters to the unit,” wrote his management company, YG Entertainment, on social media channels. “Please refrain from sending letters and we will appreciate it.”

The fan mail has caused difficulties at the military camp where G Dragon is currently undergoing five weeks of basic training, and according to the Times the sheer volume of emails received has shut down the battalion server.

“Emails have to be printed out on paper to be distributed to the soldiers, but ink and A4 paper in the battalion have run out and G-Dragon feels sorry for his fellow soldiers there,” YG Entertainment said. “G-Dragon is thankful for his fans’ concern over his military duty. At the same time, he feels sorry he can’t read all the letters sent to him. But again, please consider the tricky situation G-Dragon faces.”

G-Dragon is serving in South Korea’s 3rd Infantry “Skeleton” Division stationed in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province.

Fellow bandmates have also begun their mandatory military service, the Straits Timesreports. Taeyang was conscripted on Monday, and Daesung was drafted on Tuesday.

Daesung fourth BIGBANG member to enter into military

HWACHEON, South Korea, March 13 (Yonhap) — Idol singer Daesung joined the Army on Tuesday, becoming the fourth member of K-pop group BIGBANG to start his mandatory military duty.

Daesung arrived at the Army’s 27th Infantry Division in Hwacheon, some 118 kilometers northeast of Seoul. After a five-week training session, Daesung will be assigned to an Army unit, where he will serve out the rest of his duty.

In South Korea, all able-bodied men have to fulfill military duty for around two years.

Fans of Daesung made their way to say goodbye, shouting and holding signs with the message, “I’ll wait for you, Let’s meet again.” Daesung saluted his fans before making his way into the Army base.

The singer’s enlistment was preceded by bandmate Taeyang’s own admittance to the Army on Monday. Daesung is the fourth member of BIGBANG to serve in the military, leaving Seungri the only singer who has yet to serve. Seungri plans to enlist after releasing a solo album sometime during the first half of the year.

Outside of his success of over a decade through BIGBANG, Daesung has carved out a formidable solo career in Japan by releasing two solo albums, “D’scover” and “D-Day,” since 2013.

BIGBANG will put out “Flower Road,” a previously unreleased song later in the day, to bid farewell to fans during the group’s hiatus.
