G-Dragon

We may be seeing a solo comeback from G-Dragon sometime this year.

However, a source from YG Entertainment quickly clarified, “It’s true that G-Dragon is currently preparing for a solo album, but there is no confirmed date or any specific plans at the moment.”

If he returns with a full studio album, this would be the idol’s first in almost four years since his 2013 release “Coup D’Etat.”

[Exclusive] “Last dance”… BIGBANG will give the last performance for their new album in “INKIGAYO” on January 15

[OSEN=정준화 기자] It will be the real “last dance”. BIGBANG will mark the grand finale of the performances for their new album in “INKIGAYO” on January 15. As BIGBANG has already taken No.1 in “INKIGAYO” with “FXXK IT” for three weeks in a row, the last performance in the show will have all the more special meaning.

According to TV insiders on January 12, BIGBANG will give the last performance for their third full album “MADE” in TV music show “INKIGAYO” of SBS, which will be aired on January 15.

BIGBANG have already taken No.1 in the show with “FXXK IT” for three weeks in a row, so they cannot take No.1 in the show with the song again. However, BIGBANG prepared the farewell performance for fans. BIGBANG will sing “LAST DANCE”, the song of included in their new album released recently, for the last performance.

“INKIGAYO”s producer Cho Moon-joo said to OSEN, “BIGBANG has prepared the performance of ‘LAST DANCE’ for fans. I heard that BIGBANG is working very hard on it. I think it will be a touching moment of saying goodbye to fans.”

As BIGBANG will not perform as a complete team for a while after T.O.P joins the police for his mandatory military service in February, the last performance of BIGBANG is drawing keen attention.

[Again TV]BIGBANG’s T.O.P in “Weekly Idol”, “The thing called mania exploded”

[헤럴드POP=노윤정 기자] BIGBANG’s T.O.P showed his uncontrollable playfulness that made the other members sweat out in embarrassment.

The second BIGBANG episode of MBC Every1’s “Weekly Idol”show was aired on January 11. All the BIGBANG members heated up the atmosphere in the studio located on the third basement floor, with their outstanding sense of humor. Notably, the eldest member T.O.P made everyone burst into laughter, showing big excitement to the extent to be called “maniac”.

In “Weekly Idol” show of the day, BIGBANG members engaged in a competition called “Show me the president’s card”, whose winner can get a gift paid with the credit card of YG’s president YANG HYUN SUK. Each member talked about what kind of gift they wanted to receive and T.O.P said, “I like furniture, so I want to get a chair made by a designer in the Furniture Street in Cheongdam-dong. Then, T.O.P made everybody burst into laughter, saying, “I actually want a vacation home for BIGBANG, like in Yangpyeong, not the Gangnam area”. But after they came to know that those gifts will be paid with the members’ own credit cards, T.O.P was relieved so much and said, “Thank God I didn’t pick the vacation home.”

The game to win a gift paid by T.O.P was a ridiculous rapping competition. The members had to be selected for their rapping that does not make any sense. T.O.P said his criteria for the selection of the winner was“the one who does the weirdest rapping”.

In addition, T.O.P shocked the other members by making a freaky facial expression in a cute action battle to win an opportunity to use G-DRAGON’s credit card. For a girl group dance battle for SEUNGRI’s card, T.O.P presented a sensational dance to Brown Eyed Girls’“Abracadabra”. While doing the dance, T.O.P got so much excited and his dance became very suggestive, so the other members had to stop him. Watching the scene, MC Jung Hyung-don said, “I myself have stopped many idol singers here and BIGBANG is the first-ever idol group who tries to stop its own member.”

By the end of the shooting for the show, the MCs suggested a twice-fast dance battle to BIGBANG and DAESUNG shouted, being shocked by the never-ending shooting, “Is this episode broadcasted for like 16 weeks?” MC Jung Hyung-don answered, “You’ll not appear in this show again, so I’m trying to make the most out of you now.” T.O.P incurred the resentment of the other members by saying, “We’ll appear in this show again and will do this twice-fast dance again.”

The MCs played “BANG BANG BANG” of a twice fast speed, saying, “Just try listening to the song”. Upon the beginning of the music, T.O.P popped upon the stage, so even the MCs tried to stop him eventually.

As such, all the BIGBANG members including T.O.P fully boasted their sense of humor and wit in “Weekly Idol” show, to satisfy fans who have been waiting to see BIGBANG in the show since the promise on the complete team of BIGBANG’s appearance in the show, which was made by G-DRAGON three years ago.

8 Moments That Defined K-Pop In 2016

2016 has been one heck of a year. But while it’s been a bit of a rocky road, 2016 has also been a pivotal year in the K-pop sphere. There were many sad endings, but also bright new beginnings, so let’s have a look back and re-visit the top moments that defined K-pop last year.

1. The disbandment of the 2000s K-pop groups

2016 seemed like a year of farewells. Unfortunately, some of those farewells were said to some of our most beloved K-pop groups.

4Minute

4MinuteHate

KARA

KARA2

2NE1

2NE1

4Minute’s disbandment, and later KARA’s and 2NE1’s breakups, along with members leaving in groups like Day6, BEAST, miss A, and Secret, signaled the end of an era in K-pop. These groups were part of the global K-pop boom, taking Korean music and culture farther than it’s ever been before. These older groups also helped pave the way for new styles of music in K-pop (like the moombahton style in 4Minute’s “Crazy”), slowly shifting the style from generic pops to more varied genres.

But alas, even these legends could not last.

I FEEL YOU SUNGJAE.

With new groups popping out at the speed of light, the era of the second and third generation K-pop idols is drawing to an end, making way for the rise of a new era: the fourth generation.

But oddly enough, there also seems to be a revival of the first generation idols as well.

2. The reunion of the first generation idols

So far, we’ve had a SECHSKIES reunion.

Sechs-Kies

Se7en made a comeback.

Rain’s announced his comeback for 2017,

and Shinhwa just had their comeback a few months ago (and released their 13th album on January 2, 2017).

070916_shinhwa_01-1

Not to mention that quite a few albums, like MAMAMOO’s “Melting” and SHINee’s “1 of 1,” were pretty retro/’90s inspired. To top it off, there was the “Gayo Top 10” throwback with their funky subtitles for “Music Bank,” and the throwback homage performances at the 2016 KBS Song Festival. With all that’s going on right now, the ’90s seem like a sweet thing to bring back.

f7447d758932932c33aacee13d023d36

Will this ’90s throwback trend continue into the later parts of 2017? Hopefully!

3. The (continuing) rise of BTS

artist-101-bts-09

BTS’s meteoric rise may signal yet another beginning of a new era in K-pop. It’s very difficult for groups from smaller companies to make it on the scale that BTS has, from two Daesangs (Grand Prizes) to charting on the Billboard Chart, mainly because idol groups cost a lot of money.

48a58913199150a022e8152ad060cf52

These boys aren’t afraid to take risks when it comes to music. They use their members’ hip hop backgrounds to full advantage and take that extra step, experimenting with different concepts and addressing issues outside of safe topics like love or dating, and this really resonates with the younger generations.

BTS knows that love isn’t everything: BTS’s “Most Beautiful Moment in Life” series was a dedication to youth, while BTS’s “Whalien 52” from “Most Beautiful Moment in Life Part 2” was inspired by the 52-hertz whale, the “loneliest whale on Earth.”

BTS was not the first group to go against the bind. Groups like Seo Taiji and Boys, TVXQ, H.O.T, and even f(x) have broken the traditional K-pop go-to mold as well. (Seo Taiji was the original, but his band is so legendary, it can’t be considered just K-pop.) Some of TVXQ’s biggest hits were about social commentary on the world and human nature, and this group, in its heyday, was humongous.

4. TWICE Fever

Then we have TWICE.

These girls, like BTS, also shot to fame in 2016. Their catchy bops and adorable dances took the music charts by storm — and it doesn’t look like that’s abating any time soon.

Not going to lie: they are really catchy.

TWICE fever is reminiscent of when the Wonder Girls first began to rise to popularity, especially with the recent “Shy shy shy” and “Omona” parallel. To be fair, that can be said for the other newer girl groups as well: BLACKPINK has a similar style to 2NE1, and Red Velvet is a bit like f(x). They are from the same companies, after all. With TWICE though, while their style of music is different, the way they’re rising to the top with catchy bop after bop, much like the Wonder Girls did with “Tell Me,” “So Hot,” and “Nobody,” was seriously deja vu.

5. The rise of the Korean underground scene

Dean-Suran-Jooyoung-1

This includes not just hip-hop, but also R&B, soul, and more. I think probably anything that’s not indie or K-pop would belong in this category. The hip-hop scene has always been there in K-pop, especially with BIGBANG, Block B, and with the use of rap in most songs. But with the increasing popularity of shows like “Unpretty Rapstar” and “Show Me the Money,” the upward climb of the hip-hop scene also helped give rise to the other genres in the Korean underground scene as well, especially abroad.

Samuel Seo, another R&B artist.

In 2016, R&B artists like Dean and Crush made a huge mark on the K-pop sphere in both Korea and internationally. Dean, Zico, and Crush’s track “Bermuda Triangle” debuted on Billboard’s World Digital Songs at No. 3.

zico-bermuda-triangle-vid-still-2016-billboard-1548

This also raises an interesting question. Has the rise of the underground scene influenced these more varied styles of music in K-pop, or was it just inevitable that K-pop was going to become more varied?

6. BIGBANG’s Comeback

BIGBANG-Made-Album

I’m sure you all knew this was coming. This comeback was huge for a few reasons. First of all, it’s probably the last comeback BIGBANG will have as a five-member group for a while.

They are one of the last groups remaining from their time that has stayed active with major promotions. TVXQ, 2PM, Super Junior, SS501, and all the other big groups from their generation haven’t been able to maintain anywhere near the same level of public interest, what with members leaving, going to the military, etc. Given all that, it’s really amazing that BIGBANG has lasted this long. And we’re so glad they have.

Never forget the “Secret Garden” parody.

7. Produce 101 Excitement

imgres-2

“Produce 101,” and its resulting girl group I.O.I, was everywhere this year.

I.O.I_Chrysalis_group_photo

Using reality shows to make K-pop groups are nothing new to the K-pop sphere. VIXX, 2PM, and a few other groups were started this way. But it was never a popular way to form idol groups until a few years ago, with YG’s reality survival show that brought us WINNER.

yg_win_2013

After that, it was all the rage, with TWICE being another well-known group formed this way. It seems “Produce 101” was the Ultimate K-pop Reality Show to End All Other K-pop Survival Reality Shows. So what made it so addicting?

Waiting for that next episode like.

It gave its audience not only a peek into the behind-the-scenes process of forming an idol group, but let them have a hand in it as well. It’s the same idea behind similar shows that hit it big like “American Idol.” And like any show, once you start falling for a certain character (and there were a lot of different girls to root for), it’s hard to not get swept up in the excitement.

8. Growth of digital platforms

K-pop is more accessible than ever, not only in that there is more content, but there is more varied, better content.

SM STATION

It was a year for collaborations. Of course, there are collaborations going on all the time, but last year, SM STATION actively chased them, and brought us countless cross-agency duets, like Vibe x Chen x Heize, BoA and Beenzino, Yoo Jae Suk and EXO, Joy and Seulong, and more.

Jellybox

Jellybox is also a digital channel created by Jellyfish Entertainment, which released several singles in the course of the year, including songs by Park Yoon Ha and Yoo Seung Woo, VIXX’s Ravi, Kim Sejeong, and a vocally beautiful Christmas treat from Seo In Guk, VIXX, gugudan, and more.

V Live

V Live has had a huge presence ever since its launch late 2015, becoming the go-to platform for Korean celebrities for everything from comeback promotions to simple real-time fan interaction. It’s used by K-pop stars, K-drama stars, and movie stars, and thanks to it, we know more about our favorite celebrities than ever before.

What did you think were the defining moments of K-pop in 2016? Tell us in the comments below!

Here’s to wishing for a happy new year!

Idols you may not have known who suffered from extreme depression and anxiety

misc

Sadly, many of our beloved idols have suffered from depression and anxiety on more than one occasion. With a hectic schedule and demanding job, being an idol isn’t all fun and games and these idols are proof that behind their sweet smiles may lay some emotional pain. Check out this list of idols you didn’t know suffered from these terrible conditions.

BIGBANG G-Dragon

The quirky entertainer revealed after the release of “Heartbreaker” he “felt like a criminal” and “was depressed for a really long time” due to a plagiarism scandal.

After School Lizzy

After first starting hit show ‘Running Man,’ Lizzy revealed she suffered from depression due to media reports involving her position on the show. Rumors seem to always cause stress for idols and Lizzy was another victim of it.

Super Junior Heechul

Friendships can make or break you – and for Super Junior’s Heechul it was more devastating. After the departure of member Hankyung, Heechul felt a void in his life and said, “Hyung we don’t need you for your singing or your dancing but we need you because without you Super Junior isn’t the same.”

B1A4 Baro

Distance makes the heart grow fonder, but in this case it made it worse. After filming ‘Reply 1994,’ Baro became very attached to the cast and grew upset due to their busy schedules. Because he couldn’t m, he started becoming melancholic.

U-KISS Kiseop

Before joining U-KISS, Kiseop revealed he suffered from depression and even had thoughts of suicide due to his many failed auditions.

BIGBANG T.O.P

The charismatic rapper was reported to have suffered from anxiety attacks alongside his depression in 2008. Fans speculated he was overworked and that his frequent trips to the hospital were the cause behind it. While we hope he has recovered, T.O.P actually wrote the lyrics to “Loser,” which has us thinking otherwise.

2AM Jinwoon

Success isn’t everything. After a major U.S tour back in 2010, member Jinwoon stated he had suffered from depression. He couldn’t sleep or function properly form months at a time and often spent his days alone.

Girls’ Generation Taeyeon

The wonderful Singer Taeyeon was noted for having depression and stated she’d get “Multiple piercings to relieve stress.” Her members often commented on her melancholic mood and the way she’d only listen to sad music.

Super Junior Henry

Henry revealed on MBC’s ‘Real Men’ that he suffered from anxiety due to his ADHD for some time. His unpredictable behavior and erratic tendencies made him worrisome and bothered from time to time.

Miss A Suzy

“I have something like depression and I couldn’t tell anyone for a while. I even began to think I couldn’t last another day. One day I was chatting with my friend and laughing at a joke and all of a sudden I began crying.” Believe it or not this was a confession Suzy opened up about in 2013 on a live broadcast. While she may be in the spotlight for many great reasons, Suzy found herself struggling internally.

2AM Jo Kwon

While he may bring laughter to the stage, it was revealed that Jo Kwon suffered during his 8 years of training and felt overwhelmed by the stress of transitioning into an idol.

IU

The beautiful angel IU was noted to suffer from Bulimia and used food as a coping method. She would even eat until the point of throwing up.

BIGBANG Daesung

In the second part of BIGBANG’s appearance on “Weekly Idol,” which aired on January 11, BIGBANG tried their hand at girl group dances!

For this particular mission, Seungri acted as judge to see who would win the prize of their choice. According to the MCs, the youngest member of BIGBANG is known for his girl group dances and showed off his skills to I.O.I’s “Pick Me.”

Taeyang tried his best with labelmate BLACKPINK’s “Boombayah” and GFRIEND’s “Rough” (the latter at Seungri’s suggestion), while T.O.P had to be physically restrained by his members after dancing too sexily to Brown Eyed Girls’ “Abracadabra.”

G-Dragon Weekly Idol

In the end it came down to G-Dragon and Daesung, who both chose to dance to TWICE’s “Cheer Up.” G-Dragon brought forth all the cuteness and sweetness he could muster, while Daesung impressed with his knowledge of the original choreography.
