BIGBANG Says, “We’re living a dream.” (Interview②)
[텐아시아=손예지 기자] The reason why the 10th anniversary of BIGBANG (G-DRAGON, T.O.P, TAEYANG, DAESUNG and SEUNGRI) is remarkable is that all five of them have been together the whole time in addition to making astonishing achievements. Out of all the second-generation idol groups that debuted around the same time as BIGBANG, it is the only group that has survived with original members.
When asked what they thought would happen in ten years time when they just debuted, BIGBANG members answered, “’It was something that we couldn’t even imagine.” At that time, T.O.P, the oldest among BIGBANG members, was 20, and SEUNGRI, the youngest, was 17. It must have been hard for them to even think about what would happen in a few years time let alone after ten years.
They kept on going for ten years. They decided to release their third regular album “MADE THE FULL ALBUM” to round off the 10th anniversary of their debut. Everything they did during the past ten years became an issue. Not just their music and fashion, but the members’ everyday lives received spotlight. BIGBANG says, “We’re living a singer’s dream.”
10. Are the lyrics of “LAST DANCE” your story? I sense anxiety in the lyrics.
G-DRAGON: It is how we feel about the situation we’re in at this moment. When I write lyrics, I put a lot of thought into it. But, for some reason, this came out really quickly and easily. I’m almost thirty, and I only hang out with a selected few. There’s no point anymore. I just want to be with those whom I feel comfortable around. When we were recording the songs, I told the members to not try so hard. I didn’t want the members to sing this song with great techniques. I wanted them to sing the song as if they are talking and really mean what they are singing. I wanted a lot of emotion in their singing.
10. Even you guys feel anxious?
T.O.P: Emotionally, we’re always unstable (everyone laughs).
G-DRAGON: We’ve been doing great. But there’s not guarantee that we’ll keep on doing great. I know this too well. If you go up, someday you will go down. It’s a given. We all know this. It’s not that we’re anxious or worried; we just want things to stay as it is and be happy. You never know what will happen. It’s not that we’re really worried about a particular thing. We just don’t know what will happen in the future. We wonder what our 11th anniversary will be like and what we should do after we’ve done our military service. We have a lot on our minds I guess.
10. When you just debuted, what did you think would happen in ten years time? Is it very different from what actually happened?
G-DRAGON: When we debuted, we didn’t know we’ll get to celebrate our 10th anniversary (smiles).
T.O.P: I’m living a dream. My dream since I was little was to do music and perform for a long time like Rolling Stones. I’m thankful that I get to tour around the world and go on stage.
TAEYANG: This is like a dream-like situation for any singer. We never imagined we would be able to live a life like this in our early days. We were really busy when we were a rookie. It wasn’t something that I expected. But now I think of it, we are able to become who we are now because we were so busy back then.
G-DRAGON: I came across my elementary school graduation certificate recently, and on it, I had written that my dream was to become a singer. I have actually become a singer. It’s unreal.
10. You are going to appear on MBC’s Infinite Challenge and Radio Star. It’s been a long time since all five of you went on a variety show together.
TAEYANG: As you know, we don’t have much time (T.O.P will enlist in the police to do his mandatory military service in February 2017, and other members will soon enlist too). So, we want to show us together to our fans as much as possible. Mr. Yang also agreed that it would be a good idea to go on popular TV shows.
10. BIGBANG is not just popular in Korea but across also the world. What’s your secret?
SEUNGRI: When we debuted, there weren’t any social networking services. When we released “FANTASTIC BABY”, that’s when social networking started to go viral. It has become easier to access cultural contents wherever you are via Youtube, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and so on. Many people became our fans after watching our music videos. The fan base we’ve built is still strong. We still try to interact with them a lot through social networking websites.
G-DRAGON:: Realtime communication is possible via social networking sites, and it makes us become close to our fans as if we’re friends. It’s fun. I don’t know how other idol groups communicate with their fans, so I can’t draw a comparison. For instance, when we hold a concert in Japan, all the members talk in Japanese. The same goes for China and the US. I think people appreciate the fact that we’re trying to communicate in their language. We listen to what they say and we answer them. Communication is as simple as that. It’s trying to make the fans feel closer to us. Our fans learn Korean and our lyrics. We have to study too.
10. BIGBANG’s concerts are known to be fun.
G-DRAGON: The thing is we’re not good at dancing as a group. We’ve tried that when we were rookies. But it wasn’t for us, and it’s not what we want to achieve. In my opinion, there’s something that we and our fans like the most. When we’re doing a concert at a dome or a really big venue, we look so small, almost like fingers, to those at the very back. They have to watch us on the screen. Those who got tickets to limited view seats can’t even screen. This is why we try to go out as far as we can no matter how tired we are and no matter how crazy we look. This is one of the most important things about our concerts. Of course, our performances have to be great. But the least we can do for our fans is to look them in the eye and say hello. Go up close and sing in front of them. These things will be memorable to our fans. When I was a child, I went to a concert once, and the singer looked me in the eye. He might not think anything of it, but I thought to myself, “He looked at me!” And, I began to dream about becoming a singer. When you perform, you have to have fun on the stage, but you also have to interact with the audience. That’s communication to me.
10. Did BIGBANG ever go through a crisis?
G-DRAGON: Not that I know of. We’re all very positive thinkers. We try not to worry. We say to ourselves, “Don’t worry. Everything will turn out fine” and this is what actually happened. When we see groups breaking up, so many thoughts cross our minds. We could end up just like them. We don’t know what will happen, but we’ve respected, loved, and cared for each other, and that’s why we were able to last for ten years. More than anything else, I’m surrounded by good people. The fact that I’ve met T.O.P, SEUNGRI, TAEYANG, and DAESUNG and the staff, I feel very lucky. When people who you work with really work hard for you and give you good energy, it’s hard not do well.
10. BIGBANG is the only second generation idol group that has survived with original members.
T.O.P: The biggest reason was that we’re all so different. We can understand each other better and try to complement each other. We’ve never really had a big fight.
10. T.O.P will be the first to enlist in the military. Do you have any plans as a solo?
T.O.P: Not yet…
DAESUNG: Is it a secret (everyone laughs)?
G-DRAGON: But, there’s not much time left.
T.O.P: It’s a secret.

BIGBANG Says, “’FXXX IT’ came out when we didn’t know what to do and were just sighing.” (Interview ①)
[텐아시아=손예지 기자] Group BIGBANG (G-DRAGON, T.O.P, TAEYANG, DAESUNG, and SEUNGRI) released its third regular album in the winter of their 10th anniversary year. The album, “MADE THE FULL ALBUM”, consists of eight MADE project songs released last year, two title tracks, and a new song titled “GIRLFRIEND”. The title songs are “FXXX IT” and “LAST DANCE”. Upon their release at 12 AM on December 13, BIGBANG’s three new songs have take the top 3 spots of Korea’s eight major online charts. On the day of the album’s release, BIGBANG’s new songs went off the chart for measuring realtime plays 18 times and those who played the songs surpassed 1.21 million on Melon, the biggest music streaming website in Korea.
This indicates that not only V.I.Ps, the official name for BIGBANG fans, but also the general public were waiting for BIGBANG’s music. This is the behind story of BIGBANG’s comeback.
10. You guys have finally made a comeback.
DAESUNG: We’ve been doing our “MADE” project since last year, and we know that it took us long to release the full album (smiles). We’re sorry, but we’re thankful that we were able to finish it as late as it is. We happy to see so many people like our songs and that we didn’t work hard for nothing.
10. It will be the last album before you guys enlist in the military.
SEUNGRI: That’s why it’s more meaningful. Soon, the five of us won’t be able to do music together for a while. It’s sad that our fans and people will not be able to see us as a group, but this is all the more reason why we’re putting everything into the promotions for this album.
10. The album doesn’t have an intro song.
TAEYANG: Yes.
DAESUNG: Gosh, I haven’t thought of that. There’s no outro song either (everyone laughs).
G-DRAGON: That’s quite an unexpected question (smiles). Now I think of it, our single or mini albums always had an intro song. Usually, we work on the tracks first and leave the intro song as the last job. This time, most of the songs were MADE project songs, so making an intro never even entered our minds.
10. Let’s talk about the MADE project. It was a fresh attempt. Last year, you released four albums, and after a year, you have released “MADE THE FULL ALBUM”, which is practically a compilation of the albums you released before.
G-DRAGON: The original plan was to release the full album right after releasing the last single album. This was also the case for our single albums, but even if we had songs that were already made, if something better comes along, we put that song on the album. The finale of the project was releasing the full album, but to us, there was something missing. This is why we had to put it off again and again, and a year had gone by. It’s our bad, so we apologize for the delay.
10. “MADE THE FULL ALBUM” was like the last present from your 10th anniversary project. It is also your first regular album in eight years.
G-DRAGON: I didn’t realize that we hadn’t released a regular album in eight years. We don’t really keep track. Every year, we just work hard and don’t think about anything else. I think we’ll keep on being like this in the future too. Even these days, we are busy doing tours and performing, so much so that sometimes we don’t even know where we are when we wake up in the morning. We didn’t realize that it’s already been ten years until people started talking about it. Time has gone by so quickly. The reason why our third regular album came out in eight years is…In a way, I’m thankful that it has been released at all (smiles). If we didn’t like the album, there might have been no album at all. Thankfully, we were able to make good songs in a couple of months. We think that this album is great. Maybe, our regular third album released in the year of our 10th anniversary could actually become a masterpiece.
10. You have been loved so much for the last ten years.
TAEYANG: We talk about this a lot too. We’re very thankful. It’s hard enough being a singer for ten years. We believe that it was only possible because people loved our music. We’re very happy and thankful.
10. You have come to the end of a chapter, ten years.
TAEYANG: Now is the time to open another chapter. Not only as a group but also as individuals, we have to grow. I don’t know how we’ll turn out in the future. But, we’ve done things in a certain way during the past ten years and it has become a habit. Although it may take time because we have to do our military services, when we have the confidence and think that we’re ready, we will get together again and make music. You’ll be able to see a better version of us.
G-DRAGON: The past ten years have been fun and meaningful. Of course, not all of it was good. There were problems. With help from others, we overcame those problems and grew not just in terms of music but in other aspects too. I don’t know when, but we will have a break. How we will write our next chapter is our biggest task.
10. What makes BIGBANG’s music unique and loved by so many people?
T.O.P: We make our own music, so we express what we feel at that time through our songs. I don’t know whether this is a good thing or a bad thing, but we make music according to what we feel on the spot.
TAEYANG: Now, many idol groups make their own songs. One thing that differentiates us from them is that five of us each have our own distinctive styles. This could also be a weakness, but when all the five of us do music together it is a big plus.
G-DRAGON: All the members have their own personalities. Each of us can do things individually whether it is performing on stage, or singing, or doing variety shows, and that’s a plus. In terms of music, we do music that is appealing to a wide range of generations. When we see people in their 40s or 50s listening to our songs or singing them, we feel like we’re doing a good job. It’s very rewarding and makes me feel proud.
10. One of your charms is that you always seek change. BIGBANG’s music has changed as seen in the fact that “LIES”(2007) and “FXXX IT”(2016) are very different.
G-DRAGON: I think it’s a must. I’m a singer, but I also love listening to music. I listen to music a lot and I get influenced. People call this a “trend”. The music l like differs as time goes by. When we just debuted, I listened to a lot of house music. And, naturally, a song like “LIES” came out. Then, I listened to a lot of electronic dance and dubstep music and studied the new trendy genres of music. We made our songs after studying and taking them in, and that’s why our music has always changed. I believe that it should continue to change. If a singer only does a particular genre of music, that could become his or her signature style of music. But this is not our goal. We want to do various genres and make it our style. We’re going to try various genres. It’s a challenge but more fun that way.
10. It is said that you have to be immature to do music.
G-DRAGON: We’re very immature (everyone laughs).
T.O.P: We try to say things and do music that is considered suitable for our age.
G-DRAGON: That came from a singer. He said that singers shouldn’t grow up. To put this in a different way, I think it means that singers shouldn’t lose their innocence. We can’t keep on acting like children when we’ve become 30 something or 40 something guys (smiles). It’s not polite. We’ll try to act our age and be responsible adults. But, when we’re making music, we try not to lose our innocent side. When you ask something to little children, they might give you an answer that is so innocent that it comes as a surprise to adults. But that answer might be the truth. This is what we’re trying to achieve. Just like people in our age, we’ve grown up and will grow old. But when we’re on stage, we try not to lose touch with our innocence. I bet there is no other team that is different as we are on and off stage.
10. What did you want to express through “FXXX IT”?
G-DRAGON: Being very immature (everyone laughs). To tell you a story, the staff we work with also feel a lot of pressure. We work together as artists, and we often have differences of opinions. We each have our own styles, so when one of our songs get loved so much, we feel good but we get worried about our next album. Thankfully, we haven’t experienced a big failure as singers. We want people to keep on loving us, although we know that we don’t deserve to be loved so much. We also want to make greater albums. This time, we were worried sick about how we’ll make our next album, and a year passed. Then one person said, “Fxxx it. Let’s just do it.” TEDDY suggested that we should make a song out of this, and that’s how it came out.
10. “FXXX IT” is a groovy medium-tempo hiphop song and “LAST DANCE” is a slow R&B song. Everyone was expecting a song that has strong beats like your trademark style, but we were wrong.
G-DRAGON: I began to think simply. Good songs are songs that are pleasant to the ear, and bad songs are songs that you don’t feel like listening to. I knew people were expecting a strong beat song that will make us run about crazy on the stage. But I wanted to do something different. I wanted to make a song that is very pop, soft, and easy to relate to.
TAEYANG: We think that if we like it, people will like it too.
10. Do you think about mass appeal when making music?
T.O.P: We don’t think about that when we’re working on music. In the end, it’s Mr. Yang who give the final confirmation.
G-DRAGON: He knows what will appeal to the public. We always make experimental songs, but he turns them down (smiles). Many of our songs have been rejected. Of course, that’s his job as the head of our label. BIGBANG is a group loved the public. I thought “BAE BAE” would be too difficult for the public to take in, but people thought it was interesting. We don’t try to make music that suit the public’s taste. We don’t self-replicate. We won’t be able to grow up as artists and it won’t be fun. When we work on our music, if we like what we hear, then we think that people will like it too.
T.O.P: If we like the music we made, that make us happy.
G-DRAGON: Of course, if I’m writing a song for someone else, then I could just put in the things that I know will make the song a hit. But it’s our music, and we want to feel proud when we’re singing our songs. We’re lucky that, until now, people loved the music that we loved.
10. “GIRLFRIEND” sounds different from other songs.
T.O.P: It’s the oldest song out of the three. It’s also one of our favorite songs. We wrote the lyrics thinking about our fans.
G-DRAGON: I really miss the music we did in our early days. The song was supposed to be in one of the single albums, but it got replaced by another song. The goal of our MADE project is to do different genres for each song. That’s why we saved “GIRLFRIEND” for our regular album.

BIGBANG’s legacy: How the members avoid disbandment and why an 8-year delay is good for music
![]()
BIGBANG surprised many with their big comeback with the new single “Fxxk It” and their full-length album “MADE.” This marks the group’s first comeback after a three-year hiatus.
“MADE” is only BIGBANG’s third full-length album in the course of 10 years in the industry. For the group, the delay is not so much a bad thing as long as they are able to release a better album.
G-Dragon narrated that the album could’ve been released last year, but they postponed it because they noticed that it was lacking in many ways, allkpop reported. He noted that all of the members are perfectionists that why it took another year to complete “MADE.”
G-Dragon, Taeyang, T.O.P, Daesung and Seungri have been together as a group for over 10 years now and they have learned a lot together throughout the years. As to their music, G-Dragon said in an interview with Newsis that they tend to work on different genres. As they study their music, the music also changes.
He explained that while most groups prefer to stick to one genre to develop a clear identity, such is not the case for BIGBANG. “Bringing different genres of music is the most BIGBANG thing to do and also a challenge while being fun for us,” G-Dragon said, as quoted by allkpop.
A lot of idol groups have come and gone in the last decade. Case in point, BIGBANG’s YG Entertainment label mate 2NE1 disbanded early this month. When asked how all five of them remain a strong united front, G-Dragon said that it’s all about respect, sacrifice and love. T.O.P added that having different personalities also helped them get along.
“We’re all such different personalities that we complement each other. We’ve never had a serious argument,” T.O.P said.
BIGBANG scored an overkill with their comeback, having three tracks from “MADE” top the charts locally and worldwide.

BIGBANG reveal original military enlistment plans

Not looking forward to the day when BIGBANG do enlist…
By SBS PopAsia HQ
Having made their long awaited comeback two days ago with their “FXXK It” and “Last Dance” MVs, BIGBANG are now on the official promotional cycle. Just recently, the group sat down for a new interview at YG Entertainment, and among the various topics that were discussed, the boys revealed that they originally had different plans for their upcoming military enlistment.
In regards to their enlistment, the group said that when they previously renewed their contract, they briefly entertained the idea that should they not re-sign, they will all enlist together at the same time:
“At the time of renewing the contract, we jokingly thought, ‘If, hypothetically, we don’t re-sign a contract, then let’s all enlist together just like this.’”
Of course, that didn’t quite pan out as T.O.P is scheduled to enlist in February 2017. Following up on the question regarding their original enlistment plans, Taeyang revealed the remaining members are currently talking about when to enlist so they they can shorten the time it will take for everyone to come back as BIGBANG:
“We’re currently discussing things in order to find a way to shorten the time it takes for us to come together again. All of us think that it’ll be good to shorten that time as much as we can. The one who holds the key to that is Seungri. Since we re-signed the contract, we’re trying to go [fulfill the mandatory service] as soon as we can, so that fans will only have to see BIGBANG promote without a member for a short amount of time.”![]()

[V Report Plus] Behind-the-scenes video of ‘Fxxk It’ shows playful atmosphere
The behind-the-scenes video of BIGBANG’s “Fxxk It,” one of the lead tracks from the band’s new album, “Made,” Tuesday.
The clip showed members picking on Seungri, the youngest member. Referring to the first scene of the “Fxxk It” music video, taken against the background of a Korean bedroom in early 1990s, Taeyang said Seungri “turned the pillow because he had nothing else to do.”
The older members also did not respond to Seungri’s display of love, as he said, “I love to be with all of you.”
“We ignored you on purpose,” G-Dragon told Seungri.

In one scene, G-Dragon watched Seungri struggle to crack open a boiled egg, then smash it on his head, leading the bandmates’ to burst into laughter.
“It really hurts. I’m not kidding,” said Seungri.
When filming a scene featuring a Chinese restaurant named after Seungri, G-Dragon advised him to calm down and move his hands while singing his part.
“I know everything is funny behind the camera, but you should calm down a little bit,” G-Dragon told Seungri.
“Are you speaking Chinese?” Taeyang asked Seugnri, pointing out Seungri‘s lip movements.
“The video was being played at a slower speed,” said Seungri, who added that it’s not his fault.
The behind-the-scenes video also showed Seungri expressing worries about stage diving and crowd surfing in the last part of the music video. Seungri said, “I still have many dreams, director.”
Both the music video and the making-of video of “Fxxk It” are available via Naver’s V app.
