[Article] 10 Korean Hip Hop Tracks That Are Iconic

10 Korean Hip Hop Tracks That Are Iconic

10 Korean Hip Hop Tracks That Are Iconic

Mar 15, 2023

If you’re a rap fan and haven’t got the chance to discover Korean hip hop yet, then you are missing out. Rappers from all different categories (underground, indie, idol, and label) have brought to the table a handful of tracks that are simply iconic. Some of them are even part of the aforementioned categories interchangeably. A killer flow, flawless diction, and a takeaway message equal a recipe for excellence.

Ready to navigate this epic genre? Here is a selection of Korean hip hop tracks that are epic.

3RACHA – “Matryoshka”

Stray Kids’ fierce sub-unit consists of Bang Chan (CB97), Changbin (SPEARB), and Han (J.ONE) and lets their lyrics do the talk for them. The trio raps about burying all their struggles while putting their growing success in the front for all the haters and the doubters to see. In reference to the Russian doll, they address that they carry an abundance of challenges within to keep improving themselves.

(G)I-DLE’s Jeon Soyeon feat. BIBI & Lee Young Ji – “Is this bad b****** number”

Talk about a triple threat: Jeon Soyeon, BIBI, and Lee Young Ji channel their intimidating skills to deliver this badass rap. Each rapper puts her envious opponents back in their place with a flawless flow to set the record straight about them being everlasting in the game.

Zico – “Extreme”

Zico goes real and raw in this marvelous depiction of what makes up the pieces of himself as an artist and a person. In a well-thought-out lyrical delivery, he fully acknowledges himself and the parts that may seem extreme to prying eyes.

PSY feat. Jessi – “GANJI”

“GANJI” (or swag) is what happens when two rappers dripping with swagger join forces. On one hand, PSY flaunts his idol/rapper/performer attitude with arrogant gratitude and teases Jessi about her lyrical game. Jumping in, the fierce unnie claps back and fends for herself as she confidently spits bars in Korean and English interchangeably.

WINNER’s Mino feat. BIGBANG’s Taeyang – “Fear”

Who doesn’t recognize this epic live performance? Mino shattered both the stage and the audience with this sincere and heart-wrenching take on how fear affects our lives. As he beautifully put it, the only way to conquer our fears is by going through them.

CL – “HELLO BITCHES”

C to the L all the way! The best way to give homage to the one and only CL is by featuring this very track because it simply encapsulates her essence as an artist. From her lyrical style to her stage presence, and add to that her performative touch, the rapper knows how to mark her territory and serve us ultimate bops.

BTS – “DDAENG”

I don’t know about you, but this jam always has me going “DDAENG!” with every listen. BTS’s rap line has a distinct style separately, but together they serve us harmony on a plate with a dash of wordplay. Such is the case for “DDAENG,” which humbles anyone who ever second-guesses BTS’s talent or success.

Dynamic Duo feat. EXO’s Chen – “nosedive”

There’s nothing like a woke artist, and Dynamic Duo definitely makes the list! Joined by Chen, Choiza and Gaeko address people struggling with depression and offer comfort and support via their heartwarming and consoling lyrics.

WIN Team B – “Climax”

How far are you willing to go to make your dreams come true? Yesterday’s WIN Team B is today’s iKON, and they embraced hardships like champs. The track tackles failure, motivation, and perseverance as catalysts that will guide you to achieve your goals in life.

Epik High – “Bleed”

If you’ve been reading on Soompi for a while, you may have noticed that Epik High is featured in all of my rap articles. The reason is simple: their music speaks to me at every turn. Out of their entire discography, “Bleed” fits the bill here because Tablo and Mithra Jin narrate their musical journey between past and present to DJ Tukutz’s soulful instrumentals. That narration carries the core of Epik High’s career, their relationship with their fans, and their dedication to lasting in the hip hop scene as long as it takes. This, right here, is the definition of timeless.

A special nod to:

BewhY – “Scar”

Jay Park – “All The Way Up”

Loco feat. Gray & DJ Pumkin – “RESPECT”

Simon Dominic – “Simon Dominic”

MFBTY Feat. EE, BTS’s RM, Dino-J – “Buckubucku”

Which iconic Korean hip hop track is your favorite? Let us know in the comments below!

NewJeans, NCT 127, STAYC, Lee Chan Won, And More Top Circle Monthly And Weekly Charts

Mar 9, 2023

Circle Chart (formerly known as Gaon Chart) has revealed its latest chart rankings for the month of February and the week of February 26 to March 4!

Monthly Album Chart

There were many new entries on February’s album chart, starting with Lee Chan Won’s “ONE” debuting at No. 1! Entering the chart in second was SEVENTEEN’s BSS’s latest release “SECOND WIND.”

Last month’s chart-topper “The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION” by TXT stayed strong in the top five, dropping only two spots to No. 3. Following TXT was NCT 127’s latest repackaged album “Ay-Yo” in No. 4 and THE BOYZ’s “BE AWAKE” debuting at No. 5.

Weekly Album Chart

Debuts also dominated Circle’s weekly album chart! The only entry that was not a debut was “Teddy Bear” by STAYC, which jumped 17 spots to take the No. 1 position.

New entries that followed included Hwang Minhyun’s debut mini album “Truth or Lie,” OnlyOneOf’s “seOul cOllectiOn,” Super Junior’s Yesung’s first album “Floral Sense” (Special ver.), and IVE’s “LOVE DIVE.”

Monthly Digital + Streaming Chart

For the month of February, Circle’s digital and streaming charts were exactly the same – and almost entirely ruled by NewJeans! There was no change in NewJeans’ latest hits “Ditto” and “OMG” staying strong in the top two spots, while “Hype Boy” was able to hop back into third place.

Coming in fourth was Younha’s viral hit “Event Horizon” and NewJeans’ debut song “Attention” rounded out the top five.

Weekly Digital + Streaming Chart

Similar to the monthly chart, Circle’s weekly digital and streaming charts had the exact same ranks. Just like the monthly ranks, NewJeans took over the top three spots with “Ditto,” “OMG,” and “Hype Boy.” Similarly, “Event Horizon” by Younha maintained its No. 4 position. In fifth place was “Fighting” (featuring Lee Young Ji) by SEVENTEEN’s BSS.

Monthly Download Chart

On Circle’s latest download chart for February, NCT 127 scored the top spot with their fourth repackaged album “Ay-Yo”!

Making its debut at No. 2 was Lee Chan Won’s “Wish Lanterns,” while “ROAR” by THE BOYZ entered the chart at No. 3. Another new entry was “Fighting” (featuring Lee Young Ji) by SEVENTEEN’s BSS, followed by Lim Young Woong’s “London Boy” climbing six ranks to land in No. 5.

Weekly Download Chart

After scoring the top spot on the monthly album chart, Lee Chan Won has earned another No. 1 on Circle’s weekly download chart with “Wish Lanterns.”

BTS’s J-Hope’s new collaboration track “on the street” with J. Cole entered the chart at No. 2, followed by Hwang Min Hyun’s new title track “Hidden Side” debuting at No. 3.

Lee Chan Won’s second entry in the top five comes with “Cheers,” which has impressively climbed 30 ranks to snag the No. 4 spot. Last week’s No. 1 was “ROAR” by THE BOYZ, which has stayed strong in the top ranks at No. 5.

Monthly + Weekly Global K-Pop Chart

As a testament to the longevity of these artists’ global popularity, Circle’s monthly and weekly Global K-pop charts were identical!

Swapping the top two spots on the monthly chart were NewJeans’ “OMG” and “Ditto,” followed by “Hype Boy” maintaining its position at No. 3. LE SSERAFIM’s “ANTIFRAGILE” also stayed strong at No. 4 and “VIBE” by BIGBANG’s Taeyang and BTS’s Jimin held on at No. 5.

Monthly Social Chart

February’s social chart saw little change, with BLACKPINK, NewJeans, BTS, and Choi Yu Ree maintaining their top four ranks. In No. 5 was TXT, who flew up 20 spots to round out the top five.

Weekly Social Chart

On top of ruling over the monthly social chart, BLACKPINK also came out on top of Circle’s weekly ranking! Swapping positions were BTS and NewJeans, followed by Choi Yu Ree keeping steady at No. 4. Jumping back into the top five was Lim Young Woong after climbing two spots.

Congratulations to all the artists!

10 Old-School K-Pop Songs For When You’re Feeling Nostalgic

10 Old-School K-Pop Songs For When You’re Feeling Nostalgic

Feb 24, 2023

Music has that ability to make anyone transcend into another space and time. Particular songs can remind you of certain friends, events, or even moments. The power of music and the emotions it evokes, especially nostalgia, is a beautiful thing. Here are 10 old-school K-pop songs that are sure to evoke those feelings to all K-pop listeners from a decade ago – or older!

1. “T.O.P” – Shinhwa

We’re taking it really far back here. Shinhwa’s song “T.O.P” in the late ’90s was a powerhouse of a single, and it was enough to put them on the charts for top songs, making them a strong contender to compete against the most popular K-pop groups at the time. You really can’t help but bop your head to this chorus whenever it comes on!

2. “Bad Boy” – BIGBANG

What would a nostalgic playlist be without the mention of BIGBANG? They’ve had countless hits that have spanned over a decade, so it’s no surprise that their songs continually grace the lists of many. Their song “Bad Boy” in particular is one that was released in 2008, and it swept the MAMA awards later that year.

Honorable mentions: “Fantastic Baby,” “Haru Haru,” “Lies,” etc.

3. “GEE”- Girls’ Generation

We can’t forget the legendary girl group Girls’ Generation, who is the epitome of girl group powerhouse. Their song “GEE” brought in a wave of new K-pop fans all over the world and continues to be a memorable song when it comes to thinking about the old days.

4. “December” – TURBO

Many may know Kim Jong Kook as the work-out king in Korean entertainment, but once upon a time he was a heartthrob K-pop idol, one half of the duo TURBO (they still do concerts today). Their song “December” was the perfect tune to listen to right when the winter crisp air would hit. A definite nostalgic hit!

5. “We are the Future” – H.O.T

Now this one is taking it way back. H.O.T is the first boy group that came from SM Entertainment. At the time, they were the only boy group, and they took South Korea by storm. Although their song “Candy” is considered to be THE nostalgic anthem, their song “We Are the Future” is one that also many generation X-ers fall into the memories of.

Fun fact: The founder of Soompi started this site to share her love for H.O.T at the time!

6. “Dear Mother” – g.o.d

g.o.d, who is said to be Korea’s national group, gave so much hope and love with their music. Their debut song “Dear Mother” evoked so much heart and emotion that it is one song that people will still continue to shed tears over.

7. “I Am the Best” – 2NE1

If we’re talking nostalgic girl groups, 2NE1 can’t be overlooked. They have countless hard-hitting bops that will evoke a lot of nostalgic emotions for any long-time K-pop fan. “I Am the Best” is just one of the many.

8. “Hands Up” – 2PM

OG 2PM songs will have many fans remembering more simpler times. Their song “Hands Up” continues to be parodied and mentioned on variety shows today. The upbeat and catchy tune is sure to pop up in nostalgic playlists well into the future!

9. “Rainism” – Rain

When it comes to Rain, there are a plethora of songs that take us back. From “It’s Raining” to “Love Song,” and more – the list is endless! But “Rainism” is a fan-favorite, and even Rain himself has mentioned that it is the song that probably best embodies himself.

10. “Hug”- TVXQ

TVXQ was one of those K-pop groups who drew in a mega wave of K-pop listeners when they first debuted. Their song “Hug” was an immediate hit, and any veteran K-pop listener will understand the feels that come with listening to this song today.

Hey Soompiers, which K-pop song makes you feel nostalgic? Let me know in the comments below!

NewJeans Earns Triple Crown + SHINee’s Key, STAYC, And BLACKPINK Take Top Spots On Circle Weekly Charts

Feb 23, 2023

Circle Chart (formerly known as Gaon Chart) has revealed its chart rankings for the week of February 12 to 18!

Album Chart

STAYC has topped this week’s album chart with their new single album “Teddy Bear“! In No. 2 was TXT’s latest release “The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION,” which climbed up six spots to move back into the top five.

Jumping an impressive 29 ranks was SEVENTEEN’s fourth studio album “Face the Sun,” which originally dropped all the way back in May and recently earned a triple million certification. SEVENTEEN’s BSS followed close behind in No. 4 with the unit’s first single album “SECOND WIND.”

Lastly, TNX’s second mini album “Love Never Dies” entered the chart at No. 5.

Download Chart

Making its debut at the top of the download chart was SHINee’s Key’s “Killer,” his second repackaged album.

“Fighting” (featuring Lee Young Ji), the title track of SEVENTEEN’s BSS’s first single album “SECOND WIND,” fell one spot to No. 2 after its debut at No. 1 last week. Another new entry on this week’s download chart was “Teddy Bear” by STAYC at No. 3.

The last two spots of the top five went to Lim Young Woong’s “London Boy” and “Polaroid,” which took fourth and fifth place respectively.

Digital + Streaming Chart

For yet another week, NewJeans has earned a triple crown on Circle’s weekly charts! Just as they did last week, NewJeans took the No. 1 spot on the digital chart, streaming chart, and Global K-Pop chart, but also swept the top three spots on all three of these charts.

There was little change on this week’s digital chart, which is identical to the streaming chart and remains heavily dominated by NewJeans. The group’s hit tracks “Ditto,” “OMG,” and “Hype Boy” maintained its positions in the top three, followed by Younha’s “Event Horizon” staying strong at No. 4.

On the digital chart, NewJeans’ “Attention” climbed up two spots to round out the top five, while the song was able to maintain its No. 5 position on the streaming chart.

Global K-Pop Chart

The last part of NewJeans’ triple crown this week came on the Global K-pop chart, which remained the same as last week. NewJeans swept the top three positions with “OMG” holding steady at No. 1, followed by “Ditto” in No. 2, and “Hype Boy” in No. 3.

For another week, “ANTIFRAGILE” by LE SSERAFIM was ranked in No. 4 and VIBE (featuring BTS’s Jimin) by BIGBANG’s Taeyang came in at No. 5.

Social Chart

The rankings of this week’s social chart were the exact same as last week: BLACKPINK at No. 1, trailed by NewJeans at No. 2, BTS at No. 3, Choi Yu Ree at No. 4, and TXT at No. 5.

Congratulations to all the artists!
