(Article) Police Give Update On Investigation Of Illegal Businesses In Building Owned By Daesung

The police are proceeding with the investigation of illegal business operations in a building owned by BIGBANG’s Daesung.

On September 30, chief of the Seoul Police Agency Lee Yong Pyo said in a phone interview with the press corps, “[Regarding the investigation into Daesung’s building], we’re in the middle of investigating violations of food sanitation laws, prostitution, and suspicions of drugs in general. We have booked a total of 45 people so far and have questioned 84 people including witnesses.”

In July, Channel A reported that illegal adult entertainment businesses involving prostitution services were allegedly being operated in six out of nine floors of Daesung’s building. Daesung denied knowledge of illegal activities in his building and announced legal action against these alleged businesses in a subsequent statement.

The police then formed a 12-person task force to investigate the building and conducted a search and seizure of five businesses located on those six floors.

Seungri’s Scheduled Questioning By Police Today Is Pushed Back As He Requests Private Investigation

Sep 23, 2019

Seungri was scheduled to be called into questioning today by police but the plans have fallen through as he requested that it be rescheduled to a date that is undisclosed to the public.

Seungri was originally set to meet the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Sophisticated Crime Investigation Division on September 23 for his second round of questioning regarding charges of habitual gambling and violating the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act.

However, after the date was made public and was reported on, Seungri filed a request to change the date as he wished for his appearance at the police station to be undisclosed, so today’s scheduled questioning will not take place. A source from the Sophisticated Crime Investigation Division confirmed, “There are no plans to call in Seungri for questioning today. He will not be called in today.”

Seungri is currently under suspicion of habitual gambling in hotel casinos in Las Vegas and funding the gambling with illegal practices surrounding foreign exchange transactions, often called “hwanchigi.” Yang Hyun Suk is also being questioned for the same charges.

This was set to be his second questioning following the first, which took place in August. Ahead of the questioning, Seungri stated, “I will tell the truth about all questions by the police. I apologize for causing concern,” and once the 12-hour questioning ended, Seungri said, “I told the truth about the suspicions. I will continue to be diligent and follow the rules for the remainder of the investigation. Once again, I am sorry.”

Police To Reportedly Question Yang Hyun Suk And Seungri This Week + Receives Assistance From U.S. Authorities

Police To Reportedly Question Yang Hyun Suk And Seungri This Week + Receives Assistance From U.S. Authorities

Aug 25, 2019

The Korean police have reportedly requested assistance from authorities from the government of the United States for the investigation into Yang Hyun Suk and Seungri’s gambling suspicions.

On August 25, No Cut News reported that the Korean National Police Agency made an official request to the United States Department of the Treasury to send over YG Entertainment USA’s (hereafter YG USA) bank account data. This is to check whether Yang Hyun Suk used YG USA’s funds for gambling in Las Vegas.

As previously described by JTBC’s “Spotlight,” YG USA is a small corporate body with annual sales of 20 million won (approximately $16,500). However, its subsidiary had annual sales of 2.2 billion won (approximately $1.8 million) and expenses of 2.3 billion won (approximately $1.9 million) with a starting capital of zero won, meaning that it is most likely a paper company (a company that exists solely for financial reasons and has no operations).

The report further states that the initial gambling suspicions were brought to light when the United States Department of the Treasury informed financial and investigative authorities in Korea about the fact that Yang Hyun Suk and Seungri had bought casino chips with large sums of money but had no records having wired money from Korea.

Meanwhile, in a previous press conference, the police had stated that they were not looking into suspicions of embezzlement, but if evidence indicates that Yang Hyun Suk used YG USA’s funds for gambling, they will begin investigating suspicions of embezzlement as well.

Also on August 25, a source from the police revealed that they plan to call Yang Hyun Suk and Seungri in for questioning within the coming week. They will reportedly be called in separately, and there is a possibility that they will be summoned privately.

(Article) If You Remember These 7 Things About K-Pop, You’re An Old-School Fan

If You Remember These 7 Things About K-Pop, You’re An Old-School Fan

If You Remember These 7 Things About K-Pop, You’re An Old-School Fan

Aug 23, 2019

K-pop may not be literally as old as time, but it surely has been around for the longest time. With the birth of this popping and ever-so-versatile genre, a whole new culture came to be and shaped the early teenage years of many. In fact, some of these veteran fans are still loyal to their music taste to this day and have seen K-pop grow from a domestic sound to a phenomenon that took the world by storm.

As we take a trip down memory lane, here are seven things about K-pop that old-school fans will remember!

1. Where it all started: Gayo

Before this rich genre adopted “K-pop” as its umbrella term, it used to be known more as “gayo” back in the day. Still used in Korea, gayo is the term that refers to mainstream music in South Korea, which also includes music from K-pop idols. One of the earliest K-pop acts that gained popularity was Seo Taiji and Boys in 1992. They also happen to be one of the first Korean pop artists to implement rap in their music.

Fun fact: the music show “Inkigayo” literally means “popular music” and has been on air since 1998.

2. The OG idol generation

With K-pop going viral domestically, a new wave saw the light of day: idol culture. H.O.T., SECHSKIES, Fin.K.L, and S.E.S. were the leading idol groups in the late ’90s, and with that, the fangirling/fanboying fever came to be. And it is still fervently ongoing!

When it comes to solo careers, BoA and Rain are some of the best-known idols who have maintained their popularity over the years as pioneers of K-pop, and their respective fandoms have loyally accompanied them in their arduous journey.

The mid-2000s introduced the second idol generation with a surge of some of the hottest K-pop groups, such as Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, BIGBANG, SHINee, 2PM, 2NE1, Wonder Girls; and the list goes on!

3. Cassettes

In the early days, listening to K-pop was a true challenge. There was no iTunes, Spotify, or YouTube; there were only cassettes before CDs became a thing later on. Fans had a physical collection that enabled them to enjoy their favorite songs, and most of them burned CDs in order to build their own music library.

4. Unique concepts

K-pop is known for many things, and its peculiar concepts are definitely a recurrent characteristic. The style oscillated from matching uniforms and rocking funky haircuts to flaunting extravagant outfits and colorful hairstyles across generations.

5. Boy group/girl group collabs

Back then, year-end ceremonies were such a delight because of the many collaborative stages between idol groups that crowned these award shows. The most exciting ones were undoubtedly the guy/girl collabs because that meant awesome covers and more idol interactions!

6. Label family concerts

Another old but gold moment from the past is the much-anticipated family concert that different labels used to celebrate. What was once a regular tradition has slowly started to fade away and is not as common as before, but the good memories left behind are definitely not forgotten!

7. K-drama parodies

Back then, just when we thought our favorite idols had given us their best yet in terms of entertainment, their acting talent came shining through! Although K-drama parodies are few, they definitely remain as one of the best souvenirs that K-pop has brought our way.

Are you an old-school K-pop fan? If so, what is your favorite memory? Let us know in the comments below!

Police Provide Update On Investigation Of Yang Hyun Suk And Seungri’s Gambling Suspicions

Aug 19, 2019

It was revealed on August 8 that there was evidence of Yang Hyun Suk and Seungri gambling habitually at a hotel casino in Las Vegas. The two individuals were booked on August 14, and the police conducted a five-hour search and seizure of YG Entertainment’s headquarters on August 17.

On August 19, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Sophisticated Crime Investigation Division held a press conference and provided updates on the ongoing investigations.

A police officer shared, “We are continuing [to analyze the data obtained from the search and seizure of YG Entertainment’s headquarters]. Once the analyses are complete, we will call [Yang Hyun Suk and Seungri] in, but it will most likely not happen within this week.”

There is a possibility that the questioning will take place behind closed doors. The officer shared, “We will have to discuss whether or not to summon them publicly.”

Regarding the possibility that company funds may have been used for gambling, the officer stated, “We are not looking into [the possibility] of embezzlement in relation to the gambling suspicions.”

The police officer also addressed Yang Hyun Suk’s prostitution mediation suspicions, saying, “We will finish analyzing the bank accounts [related to the prostitution mediation] as soon as possible. We will question him when we summon him for [the gambling suspicions].”
