Yonhap News: Seungri should enter Army unless he requests draft delay

Seungri of South Korean boy band BIGBANG should join the Army this month if he does not request a conscription delay, the state military recruitment agency said Monday.

As police have been accelerating their probe into the sex-for-favors allegations surrounding the 28-year-old singer-businessman, speculation has risen that he could seek to defer his enlistment slated for March 25.

“Unless he submits a written request for postponement, he has to join the Army,” an official at the Military Manpower Administration told reporters. “If he has a relevant reason for postponement, as stipulated in the conscription law, we can deliberate on that.”

The conscription law stipulates that a man subject to mandatory military service can delay conscription if he works as a sailor on an overseas ship, lives abroad or is under detention or serving a prison term due to a criminal conviction.

All able-bodied Korean men are obliged to serve in the Army for 21 months, the Navy for 23 months or the Air Force for 24 months.

National Police Agency Commissioner General Min Gap-ryong told reporters that his staff will continue to investigate Seungri even after his enlistment.

“Our police cannot stop the investigation even if he joins the military,” Min told reporters. “We will carry out the probe in consultation with the defense ministry.”

Investigators are looking into the suspicion that Seungri used various nightclubs in Seoul’s posh Gangnam district for lobbying and even attempted to introduce escorts to foreigners to encourage them to invest in his business ventures.

He denies the allegations.

Police Ban Seungri From Leaving The Country Due To Investigation

The police have prohibited BIGBANG’s Seungri from leaving the country after booking him for allegedly providing sexual escort services for foreign investors.

On March 11, The Kyunghyang Shinmun reported that the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency banned Seungri from leaving the country after booking him, meaning that his status was changed from that of a target of investigation (the stage before someone becomes a suspect in Korean criminal law) to that of a suspect.

Because Seungri will be enlisting in the army on March 25, the police is planning to speed up the investigation.

All of this begins with SBS funE’s report on February 26, where they released text messages that were allegedly shared between Seungri, CEO Yoo of Yuri Holdings, and an employee in 2015. The contents of the messages implied that they were hiring prostitutes at Club Arena (a club located in the Gangnam district) for foreign business investors, and both YG and Yuri Holdings denied the claims in separate statements. One day later, Seungri underwent questioning at the police station and shared his willingness to cooperate with any further questioning.

On March 10, the police searched Club Arena, and later in the day, Seungri, along with three to four other people in the KakaoTalk group chat, were booked for aiding in providing sexual escort services.

BREAKING: Seungri Announces Retirement From The Entertainment Industry

Following recent controversies, BIGBANG’s Seungri has announced his retirement.

On March 11, he shared the following statement on Instagram:

This is Seungri.

At this point, I think it would be best if I retire from the entertainment industry. I decided on retiring from the entertainment industry as the issues that I caused a societal disturbance with are too major. Regarding the issues that are being investigated, I will be investigated diligently and reveal all the suspicions.

Receiving criticism and hate from the public for the past month and a half and with the situation of all the investigative agencies in the country currently investigating me, I am even being cornered as a traitor of the nation. I personally cannot tolerate causing harm to everyone around me in order to save myself.

I sincerely thank all of the fans in and outside of Korea who have given me lots of love for the past 10 years, and I think this is where I stop even if it’s at least [to protect] the honor of YG and BIGBANG.

Again, I am sorry and apologize once again.

I have been thankful to everyone until now.

Police expand Burning Sun investigation to Club Arena, National Tax Service

Amid the ongoing investigation of Gangnam-based club Burning Sun, police have begun to probe another Gangnam club, Club Arena, as well as the National Tax Service over allegations of sex bribery and tax evasion.

Investigators from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency raided Club Arena on Sunday to collect evidence related to 29-year-old K-pop star Seungri, who has been booked on suspicions of sex bribery.

Police have been looking into the suspicion after a local media outlet disclosed social media messages in which Seungri allegedly told an employee of Burning Sun club, then a Club Arena employee, to provide illicit sex services for his foreign VIP customers.

As the singer had mentioned Club Arena as the venue for where the “lobbying” would take place, police will investigate involvement of club employees in the case.

On Sunday, police booked the singer, who is slated to enlist for military service on March 25, as a suspect in alleged sex bribery. Police on Monday said they would continue the probe even after the BIGBANG members starts military service, after discussion with the Ministry of National Defense.

Some celebrities whose names were in the group message that concerned the alleged sex bribery were summoned for questioning as well, according to police.

Meanwhile, Seoul’s Gangnam Police Station sent five investigators to raid the NTS Seoul Regional Office on Friday to gather evidence on an alleged corrupt tie between the office and Club Arena on tax evasion.

Police have been investigating the club since the end of 2018 over allegations the club evaded some 15 billion won ($13.2 million) in taxes.

The raid was carried out as police found evidence that the NTS Seoul Regional Office had not properly investigated the case. Ten people were booked, including a man believed to be the owner of Club Arena, and NTS Seoul Regional Office officials were summoned for questioning.

Police also suspect that Club Arena gave money to officials at fire stations and the district office. The exact amount of money and the people involved in the case have not been disclosed, but an accounting book reportedly contains records showing millions of won in cash being paid.

Police plan to continue to investigate to find out whether the nightclub lobbied public officials in charge of overseeing fire safety and food hygiene at the club.

Police Give Update On Seungri’s Investigation + Respond To Alleged Sharing Of Hidden Camera Footage

Mar 11, 2019

The police have responded to the latest allegations of BIGBANG’s Seungri and his involvement in sharing illegally taken footage and photos.

On March 11, SBS funE exclusively reported that hidden camera footage and photos were shared in a chatroom that included Seungri, two other male singers, and others. The report stated that there were approximately 10 instances where footage and photos that were taken illegally were shared in the chatroom.

In one instance, Mr. Kim, an acquaintance of Seungri who helped the idol with his restaurant business and also worked at Club Arena, posted a video and photos of a man and woman engaging in sexual intercourse on January 9, 2016.

In response, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency stated, “We were already aware of the allegations of Seungri [and others] sharing hidden camera footage and photos [in the chatroom]. We are currently checking the details [regarding the allegations].”

Min Gab Ryong, the chief of the National Police Agency, also commented on the overall case at a press conference that took place in the morning of March 11. He said, “Even if [Seungri] enlists, the police can’t pull out from the investigation. We will continue to investigate by consulting with the Ministry of National Defense.”

When asked if the principal investigator [on the case] will be switched to the military prosecution, chief Min Gab Ryong answered, “There were instances in the past where the police could continue with the investigation if a case was considered important and in need of investigation by the police.”

He concluded, “We will have to consider different ways [of investigation] before [Seungri] enlists as part of procedure, but the police will continue to investigate after consulting with the Ministry of National Defense.”

Seungri is currently set to enlist on March 25.

New Report Claims Chatroom Involving Seungri And Other Male Singers Shared Illegal Hidden Camera Footage

New Report Claims Chatroom Involving Seungri And Other Male Singers Shared Illegal Hidden Camera Footage

New Report Claims Chatroom Involving Seungri And Other Male Singers Shared Illegal Hidden Camera Footage

Mar 11, 2019

News outlet SBS funE has released another exclusive report pertaining to the case surrounding a chatroom involving BIGBANG’s Seungri.

The report states that hidden camera footage and photos were shared in the chatroom that included Seungri and two other male singers. According to a source who has knowledge of the case, “There were approximately ten instances of hidden camera footage and photos that were illegally taken and then shared. Some of the videos and photos were shared in the chatroom that Seungri and other celebrities were a part of.”

The SBS funE reporter has released more text messages, the new ones dated at 8:42 p.m. KST on January 9, 2016. The person involved was Mr. Kim, who is an acquaintance of Seungri who was helping Seungri with his restaurant business, and he also worked at Club Arena, which the police issued a search warrant for. On January 9, 2016, Mr. Kim posted a video and photos of a man and woman engaging in sexual intercourse.

According to the text messages, Seungri responded to the initial video by asking, “Who’s that?” before recognizing the man in the video and identifying him by name. The man in question was in the chatroom. In the video, the woman appeared to be intoxicated and unaware that she was being filmed. Mr. Kim then went on to post three photos of the woman that were secretly taken. The man in the video didn’t appear to be phased by the video and photos being shared, laughing it off. It appears that the man was aware he was being filmed. Mr. Kim was the one who set up the cameras, but this has not been confirmed.

According to SBS funE’s reporting, a total of eight people were in the chatroom, Seungri, two male singers, CEO Yoo of Yoori Holdings, acquaintance Mr. Kim, one entertainment agency employee, and two regular citizens. All eight people saw the video and photos that were posted, but nobody spoke up about the potential problems with the situation.

SBS funE reported that the police has secured other text messages that show similar acts of spreading hidden camera footage. A source from the investigation stated, “Most of the women who were being filmed were not aware they were being filmed.” Other hidden videos were most likely shared within the chatroom as well. According to laws regarding sexual violence crimes, filming or sharing hidden camera footage is subject to five years or less in prison or 30 million won (approximately $26,500) in fines.

Additional investigation seems to be inevitable as allegations of hidden camera footage have surfaced on top of allegations that sexual escort services were sought. The investigation team is currently in possession of all the chatroom text messages, and the people in the chatroom, including Seungri and the other male celebrities, will be called in for additional questioning.
