Gaon Chart “GD’s USB album cannot be recognized as a record”… YG, “Regrettable for such definition”

[OSEN=김은애 기자] While Gaon Chart has made the final decision not to recognize G-DRAGON’s USB memory stick album as an official type of record, YG expressed regrets for Gaon’s definition of record.

On June 19, Gaon Chart confirmed that G-DRAGON’s new solo album “KWON JI YONG” released in the form of a USB memory stick cannot be recognized as an official form of record. The reason for such decision was because Gaon saw that the meaning of “record” stated in the copyright law of Korea and the Gaon Chart’s meaning of “album” are different.

Gaon Chart explained, “In terms of the definition of a ‘record’ in the revised copyright law of Korea, the ‘KWON JI YONG’ USB may be categorized as a ‘record’. However, it is different from Gaon Char

Gaon Chart went on to say, “Gaon has decided that the ‘KWON JI YONG’ USB is the medium of transmission (download service) according to the copyright law, so it will be included on Gaon’s digital chart and download chart”.

YG said to OSEN regarding such decision of Gaon Chart, “We respect Gaon Chart’s decision. We feel a little regrettable though for Gaon’s definition of ‘record’ which is limited only to traditional forms of record, when thinking about G-DRAGON’s opinion that the most import thing is the music itself”.

YG went on to say, “The world is changing so rapidly and IT and other technologies are changing even more rapidly than the world. We still believe that ranking songs of only cassette tapes and CDs which are not widely used any longer on charts does not match the trends of our times”.

“Most people nowadays do not store music in their phones. They just store information in their phones. They do so because they can share more information freely through streaming anywhere any time by using the fast-speed Internet. When following the logic of Gaon Chart that ‘KWON JI YONG’ cannot be included in the chart because the USB stick does not contain music, music charts would have to reflect the number of downloads of music only, not the number of streaming”, highlighted YG.

G-DRAGON released “KWON JI YONG”, his first solo album in four years, on June 8. The off-line album of “KWON JI YONG” released today (June 19) comes out in the form of USB memory stick only, not CD.

Gaon Confirms G-Dragon’s USB Won’t Be Counted As A Physical Album, YG Responds

Gaon officially announced on June 19 that they will not be counting G-Dragon’s “Kwon Ji Yong” USB as a physical album on their charts.

Gaon said, “If you look at the definition for ‘record’ in revised copyright law, it’s possible the ‘Kwon Ji Yong’ USB could be considered a ‘record.’ However, Gaon Chart’s definitions of ‘album’ and ‘record’ are not the same, and [‘albums’] are limited to devices that have music on them.

“As a result, according to copyright law, the ‘Kwon Ji Yong’ USB will be categorized as a download service, and it will be counted toward digital and download charts.”

A source from YG responded to the announcement, saying, “We respect Gaon Chart’s decision. What’s important to G-Dragon is the music, although the fixed physical form and outdated chart aggregation methods are a shame.”

The source continued, “The world is changing so fast, and the development of IT technology is moving even faster. Our opinion that trying to limit album sales and chart aggregation to hard-to-find cassette tapes and CDs is outdated has not changed.

“Nowadays, most people don’t save music to their phones, just information. This is because now with fast internet, more information [and music] can be freely streamed and shared. If Gaon Chart’s reasoning is that the USB doesn’t have music on it and therefore can’t be counted as a physical album, then digital charts should also only count downloads and not streaming.”

#KwonJiYong: G-Dragon Speaks Out About Album Format Controversy

Last week, BIGBANG leader G-Dragon dropped his comeback mini album, titled “Kwon Ji Yong”, to much fanfare. While the album is becoming one of his most successful projects – selling a whopping total of 762,000 copies on the day of release in China and entering Billboard 200 for the 3rd time – his album format has sparked a debate.
This is because the album adopted a non-traditional/non-conventional form.

“Kwon Ji Yong” was released in a red USB that did not contain the songs, but instead links with special input keys to download said songs. As interesting a strategy as it is, coupled with the Korea Music Content Association deeming it an official album, some South Korean music charts are debating whether or not to include it in their ranking.

Note: South Korean music charts are important for artistes as it tracks album sales and impacts an artiste’s performance (read: awards, music shows).
Gaon Chart has straight up refused to accept G-Dragon album as the USB doesn’t actually contain songs. This means that it will affect the idol’s rankings in music shows like “Inkigayo” and “Show! Music Core”, which includes Gaon Chart calculations.
But BIGBANG’s leader is not one to just sit back and let it brew. Shortly after the news broke, G-Dragon took to his Instagram to ask, “What’s the problem?”

In his caption, he questioned the people who judged his work based on whether or not it’s a physical album. “What really matters is being remembered in the ears and mouths of others, or the lyrics and music that will be remembered for a long time,” he wrote.
We can’t agree more. Fighting, G-Dragon!
Meanwhile, G-Dragon is about to embark on his “ACT III, M.O.T.T.E (Moment Of Truth The End)” world tour. More information on that here.
