To recognize it as a record or not… “G-DRAGON USB” That is the question

[스포츠 동아=김원겸 기자] Link to downloading website, KMCIA made a final decision that “it is not a record”, But “recognized as a record” and ranked on Hanteo Chart

G-DRAGON’s USB memory stick record is rising as a “hot issue” in Korea’s record industry.

While G-DRAGON’s new mini-album “KWON JI YONG” is to be released off-line on June 19 in the form of a USB memory stick alone, Korea Music Contents Industry Association (KMCIA) decided that it cannot be recognized as a record, to trigger a controversy. The KMCIA is running Korea’s official music chart Gaon which is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.

The current copyright law of Korea defines a “record” as “a material object on which music is fixated”. As a USB memory stick can also play the role of storing medium for music just as LP, cassette tape, and CD do, the KMCIA had been originally intended to recognize it as an official type of record, starting from G-DRAGON’s USB album.

However, G-DRAGON’s USB leads to a specific website after starting, to make its users put in the serial number written on the case and download the music and videos. That is why the KMCIA decided not to recognize it as a record, seeing G-DRAGON’s USB album as a device for downloading music. The association sees it as something similar to “Kihno album”. “Kihno” is a new type of record produced to enable users to download music, videos, and photos by using an application on a smartphone or computer. The KMCIA is not recognizing it as an official type of record.

Therefore, “KWON JI YONG” will not be included in the album sales chart of Gaon. The decision of the KMCIA will also affect the rankings of TV music shows, as SBS “INKIGAYO” and MBC “Show! Music Center” give rankings to songs based on the record sales volume counted by Gaon Chart.

However, many also insist that G-DRAGON’s USB album does not have any problem with being recognized as a record, as purchasing it is no different from purchasing a record. They claim that recognizing only the conventional forms of record as the official type of record is not reasonable, as the environment of the music industry and storage media for music are rapidly charging recently. Indeed, another music-ranking website Hanteo Chart regards “KWON JI YONG” as a “record” and will include it in its rankings.

The KMCIA says greater problems will arise if G-DRAGON’s USB album is recognized as an official form of record. Then, a general USB memory stick with G-DRAGON’s songs downloaded in it or a USB memory stick in which songs extracted from CD are stored might need to be recognized as a record, according to the association. The KMCIA also worries that if those types of storage medium are recognized as a record, it might cause a problem of “hoarding” of records and subsequent distortion of rankings on charts.

Fans Share That G-Dragon’s New USB Album Rubs Off Red Ink

A bizarre phenomenon has been spotted in G-Dragon’s new USB album “Kwon Ji Yong” as the red ink painted on the exterior of the USB rubs off and leaves stains.

On May 15, a Japanese fan of G-Dragon shared a picture of the problematic USB album shedding red ink on Instagram. The fan added, “Be careful everyone,” in Korean as the post’s hashtag.

Cases of the USB album’s red ink rubbing off have been observed in Korea as well. In a Facebook comment, a Korean fan speculated, “I think the point is to make the USB look like it has blood on it… It suits the theme, ‘born’ too. I doubt they made it like that by mistake with current technology.”

Meanwhile, G-Dragon took to Instagram to respond to the dispute about whether or not to view G-Dragon’s USB album as an “album,” questioning, “What’s the problem?”

[N1★Issue] GD says “The external form is not important” regarding the controversy over the form of his new album

[서울뉴스1=황미현 기자] Group BIGBANG’s G-DRAGON directly mentioned the controversy over his new solo album released in the form of a USB memory stick, regarding “whether it is a record or not”.

On June 15, G-DRAGON said on his Instagram account, “What’s The Problem?” Then, he went on to express his thoughts about the controversy by saying, “Is it really meaningful if the outcome of an artist’ hard work is determined to be a ‘record or not’ by other people’s decision?”

“Everything in the world has pros and cons, but the external form of music records has consistently changed from cassette tape to CD and then to download file. Isn’t the most important thing for music is a good melody that will linger on the ears, mouths, and minds of people for a long time and the lyrics that can touch people and make them laugh and cry?”, added G-DRAGON.

The message was the expression of G-DRAGON’s regrettable feelings about the Korea Music Contents Industry Association(KMCIA)’s opinion that G-DRAGON’s new solo album released in the form of an USB memory stick cannot be recognized as a record.

The KMCIA decided not to recognize G-DRAGON’s new album as an official record, making an issue of G-DRAGON’s USB memory stick record which leads to a specific websites after starting.

Because of the KMCIA’s decision, G-DRAGON’s new album “KWON JI YONG” released in the form of a USB memory stick will not be taken into the official counting of record sales, so the ranking of the album in TV music shows, etc. will be substantially affected.

G-Dragon Responds To Gaon Chart Rejecting “Kwon Ji Yong” USB As An Album

In response to the recent announcement from the Korea Music Content Industry Association that G-Dragon’s new album, which will be released offline in USB form only, cannot technically be acknowledged as an “album,” G-Dragon responded on Instagram.

He said, “What’s The Problem?

“Is that it, if someone who you don’t even know decides that an artist’s work ‘is an album’ or ‘is not an album’? What’s the reasoning behind that point of view?

“Of course, there are pros and cons [to having the USB album], but the external form of music has been changing for quite some time, from tapes to CDs, to downloadable files…

“Isn’t the most important thing that which will stand the test of time to remain in our ears and on our lips, the melodies that will become a part of our memories, and the lyrics that will let us comfort each other, and laugh and cry together? Isn’t that everything?”

"What's The Problem?"

Here’s why the Korea Music Content Industry — which operates Gaon — is not calling G-Dragon’s USB for “Kwon Ji Yong” an “album”:

According to current copyright law, an “album” is “a physical object that contains music.” Initially, because a USB — like an LP, tape, or CD — is an object that music can be saved to, the Korea Music Content Industry was going to approve G-Dragon’s USB as an album.

However, the USB for “Kwon Ji Yong” contains a link to a site where the user can enter the key code printed on the album case to download the album and music video. As there is no music technically on the USB, the Korea Music Content Industry is considering the device a tool for downloading music rather than the actual album itself. The organization considers something like this a “kino album,” a new type of album that lets users download albums, music videos, photo shoots, and more through a smart phone or computer app. The Korea Music Content Industry does not categorize “kino albums” as “albums.”

As a result, G-Dragon’s “Kwon Ji Yong” is not being included in Gaon’s album sales charts, which will then have an impact on his rankings for SBS’s “Inkigayo” and MBC’s “Show! Music Core,” which take into account the Gaon album chart.

Opponents of this decision are claiming that purchasing the USB is still an act of purchasing the album, so the USB can still be considered as such, regardless of its external form or manner of saving music.

Songs By G-Dragon And NCT 127 Deemed Unfit For Broadcast By KBS

It was reported on June 14 that NCT 127’s “Cherry Bomb,” along with four of G-Dragon’s songs, have been ruled as unfit for broadcast.

The tracks “Middle Fingers-Up,” “BULLSHIT,” “SUPER STAR,” and “Divina Commedia” from G-Dragon’s latest album “Kwon Ji Yong” failed to pass KBS’s review due to profane and vulgar expression. The lyrics of “SUPER STAR” also mentioned a specific product brand.

Another song that was deemed unfit for broadcast was NCT 127’s title track “Cherry Bomb.” According to KBS, the lyrics containing expressions like “head shot pop” seemed to depict violent behavior.

What are your thoughts on KBS’s decision?
