YG Announces Legal Action Against Invasion Of G-Dragon’s Privacy

YG Announces Legal Action Against Invasion Of G-Dragon’s PrivacyYG Entertainment has announced that the agency will not be taking the invasion of G-Dragon’s privacy lightly. Over the weekend, September 17, G-Dragon’s private Instagram was hacked, revealing G-Dragon’s personal photos to the public.
September 21, YG announced their plans to take legal action. “Hacking a private social networking site and sharing the photos is a crime. As a result, photos that were only available to 150 close acquaintances were widely spread online.”
In addition to the hacking, photos were modified and redistributed, YG said, which are two additional crimes against G-Dragon, including defamation.
YG said, “We will be filing complaints against not only the hacker, but those who spread malicious rumors. These are measures to prevent additional invasions of artists’ privacy, which crossed the line and broke the law. YG has already asked media to refrain from using G-Dragon’s leaked photos.”

G-Dragon‘s privacy has been heavily intruded on the past several weeks following leaked news of his relationship. And now he’s taking action.

Just recently, G-Dragon’s personal Instagram account, which he keeps separate from his public account (@xxxibgdrgn), was hacked into. The hacker changed the settings from ‘private’ to ‘public,’ revealing the content of the Instagram to the world as well as the BIGBANG member’s relationship with Japanese model Nana Komatsu.

On September 21st, YG Entertainment released a statement revealing G-Dragon’s plans of taking legal action against not only the hacker but netizens who have left malicious comments.

The agency says, “G-Dragon has been using his private Instagram account in order to share the daily lives of himself and some close friends around him. It is an illegal act to hack and share private accounts of his Instagram users. The person responsible for the hacking has broken the law by changing the settings on his Instagram account from ‘private’ to ‘public.’ Due to this, the account which only was accessed by 150 people was widely shared to the public. Some photos were also altered by Photoshop before being shared widely through the web.”

In addition to taking legal action against the hacker, YG Entertainment further reveals they will also take action against those responsible for spreading malicious rumors with the intention of defaming their artist. According to the agency, they hope their serious response to malicious comments will prevent any similar incidents from happening in the future.

T.O.P curates fine visual menu for Sotheby’s: His taste in art draws from old and new, East and West

As a young art collector rather than as a pop icon, Korean star Choi Seung-hyun, better known as T.O.P, a member of the band BIGBANG, has guest-curated Sotheby’s evening auction of Western and Asian contemporary art to take place in Hong Kong on Oct. 3.

A collaboration between the fine art world and a young pop idol may arouse skepticism but Patti Wong, chairman of Sotheby’s Asia, confirmed her trust in T.O.P’s insight in contemporary art on Monday, saying that the London-based auction house works with him “not because he is a pop artist but because he is a collector.”

“Today, collectors’ tastes are going toward that of young-aged ones, who, by actively getting information through social media and the internet, have a wider taste than earlier collectors who focused on narrower fields or genres of art,” she said. “T.O.P is at the forefront of the new trend.”

She added that co-curating with a pop star has never been done before at Sotheby’s auctions. She was in a press preview of the 28 pieces of works selected by the star for the auction titled “#TTTOP” at the Shilla Seoul hotel.

The works, which are estimated to be worth about 90 million Hong Kong dollars ($11.5 million) are the products of big names such as Andy Warhol, George Condo and Rudolf Stingel. A rare series by Keith Haring from the collection of the renowned photographer David LaChapelle is also being offered. Works by Korea’s most important artists, such as abstract painter Kim Whanki and video art founder Nam June Paik, are also included.

In the press preview, the 28-year-old T.O.P, wowed reporters by showing integrity and knowledge about art. Here are excerpts from the preview and his exclusive e-mail interview with the Korea JoongAng Daily before it.

Q. Among your selections are dansaekhwa [or Korean monochrome abstract paintings that developed in the 1960s to 80s.] It is interesting because you are a young collector, while dansaekhwa tend to be favored by elder, veteran collectors.

A. I like the meditative air in those Korean art pieces. I prefer two groups of art – one are the artworks that are visually strong and eye-catching and the other are those that are visually minimalist but have novel concepts or deep philosophies. I was able to have my eyes opened to the latter early on, thanks to my family background. All my mother’s sisters are artists. And my [maternal] grandfather’s uncle is Kim Whanki. So I naturally came to learn the beauty and philosophy of Korean [modern] art works.

For this auction, I mixed them with those by Western masters such as Gerhard Richter and Jean-Michel Basquiat, as I‘d like to show a new harmony generated by them. I deliberated a lot on how this auction should be composed. It took more than a year.

And what’s your standard in collecting art for yourself or recommending art for other collectors?

I consider first the novelty, scale and depth of concept in an art piece and then the scale of beauty.

Do you think your participation in this auction could influence young collectors?

I hope so. I hope young people will recognize that visual art, like music, is not so difficult to understand. In the diary of Kim Whanki that I read when I was young, he said every master’s painting has music in it and he was looking for his own song, his own music in his paintings. I was greatly impressed by his words. I, as a musician and actor, get inspiration and clues from visual art. I think other young people, not only those in fields of music and film, can be inspired by visual art.

Meanwhile, this auction will also support emerging artists, as a portion of the sales’ proceedings will be donated to the Asian Cultural Council (ACC). When I asked the famous artist Takashi Murakami for a commissioned work for this auction, he gladly accepted it, saying that he was also helped by the council’s program.

T.O.P of K-pop boy band BIGBANG has been invited to curate a charity auction held by Sotheby’s in Hong Kong on Oct. 3.

He himself selected 28 pieces of art to be put on sale at the auction, dubbed “#TTTOP.” He revealed his wide knowledge of art at a press event in Seoul on Monday.

“My grandma’s uncle was abstract painter Kim Whan-ki and my uncle’s father was painter Lee In-sung,” he said. “Since I grew up appreciating Korean art, I not only selected pieces by famous Western artists such as Richter and Andy Warhol but also distinguished and young Asian artists because I wanted to add variety to the collection.”

“I often get inspiration from visual images which helps me in my music and acting careers,” he said. “I hope young people can experience the same.”

He also said he chose the works that suit his taste and that he wants to hang in his house, not just works by famous artists.

The project was suggested by a young Japanese collector a year and half ago. Some of the proceeds will be donated to the Asian Cultural Council which helps young artists in Asia.

“At first, I worried if the auction would look like a commercial event,” he said. “But I decided to participate to help struggling young artists.”

Japanese pop artist Takashi Murakami, who was a scholar of the ACC, is also participating in the auction.

Chinese fans of BIGBANG’s T.O.P. will find him again in their television screens very soon as the idol is being considered for a role in the incoming Chinese drama ‘I Think I Love Ni.’

The actor has yet to confirm his involvement in the film version of the drama, but if he does, he will be acting alongside known actress Yuan Shanshan. Shanshan plays an ordinary girl who works for the fashion magazine’s editor-in-chief as his secretary and if T.O.P. agrees, he will be playing Shanshan’s boss as the editor-in-chief.

The story would then revolve around the story of the secretary as she becomes the editor-in-chief’s ‘bumbling pretend girlfriend.’

BIGBANG has enjoyed a huge following in China despite the restrictions currently set on Korean idols by the Chinese government. For T.O.P, he is set to appear in the German-Chinese action thriller ‘Out of Control’ alongside Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung Pak-chi. The movie is expected to be released this December.

BIGBANG’s T.O.P proud of taking part in Sotheby’s charity auction

T.O.P of the popular K-pop boy band BIGBANG said Monday he feels honored to curate a charity auction by one of the world’s largest brokers of collectibles.

“I carefully chose each one of the items to be put on sale in this event together with the Sotheby’s, keeping in close contact for more than one year,” the 29-year-old singer-rapper said during a news conference in Seoul to promote the event. “I feel really great and honored to be taking part in the event and for the confidence that Sotheby’s has given to me even though I’m just a young art collector.”

The BIGBANG rapper will present an art collection labeled “#TTTOP,” on Oct. 3 in Hong Kong. More than 25 pieces worth US$11.5 million from up-and-coming Asian and renowned Western artists will be put on sale. Among the distinguished artists presented are Andy Warhol, George Condo, Rudolf Stingel, Sigmar Polke, Kim Whan-ki, Lee U-fan and Paik Nam-june.

Also included are works by rising Japanese, South Korean and Chinese artists such as Gokita Tomoo, He Xiangyu and Saito Makoto and the singer’s friends and modern artists Takashi Murakami and Nawa Kohei.

“I selected works that best suit my taste as a young collector,” said the star whose Korean name is Choi Seung-hyun. “I also put importance on the freshness of ideas and the size of beauty behind them.”

Part of the profits from the T.O.P-Sotheby’s auction will be delivered to The Asian Cultural Council, a non-profit foundation engaged in fostering economically struggling young art talent in Asia.

“This is not the usual kind of commercial auction but a goodwill event to help struggling young artists,” he said. “I hope there will be a good outcome.”

This marks the New York-based British multinational company’s first collaboration with a young Asian celebrity.

The singer-songwriter-actor is also known for his passion for collecting design furniture and contemporary art work. He previously worked as the curator of a contemporary art exhibition titled “The Eye Zone” at Singapore Art Science Museum.

The preview exhibition for the auction is scheduled for Sept. 21-22 in Seoul and Sept. 30-Oct. 3 in Hong Kong. (Yonhap)
