G-Dragon Draws Chinese Crowds to Clothing Store

The flagship store of clothing brand 8 Seconds in Seoul’s shopping district of Myeong-dong was teeming with Chinese tourists on Monday who had come all the way to buy hats and T-shirts branded boy band rapper G-Dragon.

G-Dragon, of BigBang, was tapped as a new model for the brand in August, and daily sales in the Myeong-dong store soared to W200 million ahead of BIGBANG’s 10th-anniversary concert on Aug. 20 (US$1=W1,106).

“Before hiring G-Dragon it took us at least 10 days to achieve such sales,” a staffer said.

Chinese fans also made up a majority of the 65,000 who packed World Cup Stadium in northwestern Seoul for the anniversary concert.

The duty free shop at Shinsegae Department Store in Myeong-dong, which G-Dragon also advertises, racked up record sales of W1.6 billion on the day of the concert. And YG Store, which sells BIGBANG merchandise, saw sales rise more than five-fold.

While fan meets with Korean Wave stars such as Park Shin-hye and Song Joong-ki have been canceled in China amid a spat over the U.S.’ Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense battery to be stationed in Korea, a concert in China by BIGBANG member Taeyang proceeded without a hitch.

G-Dragon is to visit Shanghai on Sept. 30 to open 8 Seconds’ first store in the city.

Global fandom leads to higher interest in Korean culture

Global fandom leads to higher interest in Korean culture

K-pop group BIGBANG’s 10th anniversary concert was held on Aug. 20 at Seoul Worldcup Stadium in Mapo-gu, Seoul. A yellow banner with the above slogan was held by 22-year-old Shanghainese Wang Weisi. A fan of G-Dragon, Wang said, “I’ve been to their concert in China, but didn’t hesitate to reserve a ticket in Korea in hopes for a more special concert.” With global fans crowding the stadium, various foreign languages can be heard.

Here we live in an era of “global idols.” EXO fan clubs amount to 3.7 million, including Chinese and Japanese fans. Once limited to Asian regions in the early 2000s, World tours held by K-pop idols have now reached to the Americas and Europe. The SM Town Paris Concert held in 2011 was clearly a symbolic evidence of the “globalization of the Korean Wave.” It was the first live concert held by K-pop singers in Paris, and hundreds of local fans extended the concert from once to twice by demonstrating a flash mob. Since the first world tour in 2008, BIGBANG held its second world tour last year, attracting 1.5 million fans from 15 countries including not only Asians, but also Americans and Australians. Now, global fans do not hesitate to visit Korea for domestic concerts. “At least 10,000 tickets are bought by overseas fans of BIGBANG or EXO,” said an official of the ticketing website YES24.

Global fandom not only attracts overseas fans, but also invites the culture itself. Peruvian Roxana Salazar Kysfe enrolled her first class at the Cusco Korean Council in 2011. “I wanted to understand the lyrics of my favorite singers without translation,” the 25-year-old fan of Super Junior and BIGBANG said. “I learnt Korean cuisines and history at the Council.”

“K-pop idols are the first success created by the Korean Wave,” said Professor Seo Kyung-deok of Sungshin Women’s University. “Thanks to the creation of global fandom in idol media contents, the entire Korean culture including food and fashion are going global.”

[Dispatch=이수아기자] BIGBANG’s G-DRAGON proves that he is a true fashionista by pulling off some pretty difficult looks.

But the market was only a mere background. G-DRAGON showed off unique fashion against the background of neon signs and old buildings.

His fashion was shocking indeed. In one picture, G-DRAGON wore a loose-fitting jacket, exposing both shoulders, on top of white jeans and sneakers.

In another picture, G-DRAGON pulled off a high fashion look wearing a glittering spangled jacket. His fierce eyes added to his charisma.

He also showed his affection for his cat. In one picture, G-DRAGON shows his usual self enjoying a hearty meal.

G-Dragon Shares What It Was Like Meeting Kim Hye Soo In Person

Even BIGBANG’s G-Dragon couldn’t help but be starstruck in front of Kim Hye Soo.

On the September 3 episode of MBC’s “Infinite Challenge,” a private preview showing was held for the show’s blockbuster special, “Muhan Company.”

In addition to the regular cast members, Yang Se Hyung, director Jang Hang Joon, and G-Dragon also attended this day.

During the introduction, Yoo Jae Suk shares a funny incident that happened on set. According to him, when Kim Hye Soo and Lee Je Hoon arrived to film their cameos, somehow none of the “Infinite Challenge” cast members were there, and only G-Dragon was there to welcome them. Feeling apologetic, he remarks, “[G-Dragon] was really like the representative director.”

Thinking back to that time, the idol reveals what meeting Kim Hye Soo for the first time was like. He comments, “She was powerful and intimidating. Even if she didn’t say a lot, you could feel this aura surrounding her,” and makes everyone laugh at his candid commentary.

Director Of “Muhan Company” Highly Praises G-Dragon On His Acting

BIGBANG’s G-Dragon can now add the title “actor” to his long-list of accomplishments.

On the September 3 episode of MBC’s “Infinite Challenge,” the first part of the show’s blockbuster special, “Muhan Company,” was revealed.

Before the release of the movie, the cast members and G-Dragon gather for a private preview. While he was confused why he was there, the idol confesses that he agreed to appear because he thought it would be a sketch, not a full-blown feature.

Embarrassed, he says, “I’m making my film debut through ‘Muhan Company.’ I don’t want to see myself act.”

While G-Dragon has acted in smaller projects such as music videos and parodies, he has never properly made a debut as an actor, as he previously confessed he always turned down roles in dramas and films.

However, despite his worries, the director of “Muhan Company,” Jang Hang Joon, has nothing but praise for the idol. He states, “I was certain that [G-Dragon] would act well. He is a professional for sure, and he changed when he was in front of the camera.”

In line with the director’s compliments, G-Dragon reportedly filmed successfully, without any major hurdles. Many people are looking to see actor Kwon Ji Yong (his real name), and a different side to the BIGBANG member.

“Muhan Company” is a two-part thriller movie that was written by Kim Eun Hee, whose famous for “Signal.” In addition to G-Dragon, various actors such as Kim Hye Soo, Lee Je Hoon, Kim Hee Won, and Kunimura Jun also made stellar cameo appearances.

[Billboard] Happy 10-Year Anniversary, BIGBANG! 10 Must-Listen Songs from the Boy Band

Lee Young-ho/AP
BIGBANG attend a photocall at CGV Cinema in Seoul, South Korea on June 28, 2016.

Moving at lightning speed with a new group here and a new hit song there, the K-pop world isn’t built for longevity. But the industry has changed over the past few years and acts are maintaining their popularity longer than ever. Among the groups looking to keep the music playing, no act has enthralled the Korean music world in the past decade quite like BIGBANG. Since their first performance in Seoul on August 19, 2006, the quintet has led K-pop with a dominating style of music that surpasses genre boundaries to formulate BIGBANG’s unique style.

After initially pursuing a hip-pop and R&B-inspired sound, the group has paved a path filled with experimental bangers and melancholic, reflective ballads. Fronted by the fashion forward singer-songwriter G-Dragon, BIGBANG has become one of the most recognizable Asian acts around the globe through their work together as well as the different sides of their musical selves displayed on individual and unit releases. Individually, the five members -- G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Daesung, and Seungri -- have built their own careers: all of the members have released solo albums, several have joined together to form subunits, and many have pursued acting and other art forms. But, as many fans (known as VIPs) will tell you, BIGBANG is at its best when all together. Their latest, last year’s MADE album, featured some of the highest charting and best-selling songs in Korea in 2015.

BIGBANG Ties Psy For Most No. 1s on World Digital Songs Chart

Over the years, BIGBANG’s come out with tracks that have overrun the K-pop fanbase both in South Korea and overseas. We’ve winnowed down their expanse of singles to pick the top 10 to celebrate the anniversary.

10. “Tonight”

Electropop songs were already BIGBANG’s thing in 2011 by the time they dropped “Tonight,” but the single was more nuanced and sophisticated than many of their previous club anthems. Word painting at its finest, "Tonight" is a four-minute sonic journey to one of BIGBANG’s concerts. Fist-pumping beats and applause are layered under the building, heavily autotuned vocals before coming to a conclusion with sudden silence and then picking up again as if returning for an encore.

9.  “Bang Bang Bang”

The best-selling single in South Korea in 2015, “Bang Bang Bang” is a thumping power anthem that built off of the group’s highly successful 2012 single “Fantastic Baby.” Like the earlier song, “Bang Bang Bang” has its EDM moments as it picks up in speed with each member’s verse before slowing it down with G-Dragon’s transition into trap and the pulsating chorus that leads to its shift into full-blown banger. Needless to say, the song peaked at no. 1 on the World Digital Song Chart.

8. “Last Farewell”

Step aside for the kings of K-pop. At least, that was what BIGBANG was going for in 2007. Hot off the success of “Lie,” the quintet followed up with a similarly styled dance song that was a bit rowdier as if reveling in their recent rise to fame. Featuring trance and hip-hop elements, “Last Farewell” is one of the group’s early bangers that’s still a fan favorite. The song was extraordinarily popular in South Korea, where it topped music charts for two months thanks to its feel-good vibes. Almost a decade later it still hits the right notes to get everyone’s hands up.

7.  “Let’s Not Fall In Love”

The bittersweet “Let’s Not Fall In Love” is one of the group’s most recent songs and, accordingly, one of the most impressive. Keeping with their classic sentimental dance sound, the midtempo tune became BIGBANG’s third no. 1 on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart. From rapper T.O.P anachronistically introducing the track with a sentimental verse to the composition shunning a clearly defined chorus, “Let’s Not Fall In Love” is an alternative to the group’s typical song composition and a display of BIGBANG’s versatility after nearly a decade on top.

6. “Loser”

With a lilting R&B tune, BIGBANG returned to the Korean music scene after three years away with “Loser,” the first song from last year’s MADE series. Unlike the majority of BIGBANG singles, which typically fall safely in the love song category, “Loser” is one of the group’s most introspective efforts while highlighting the feelings of doubt and unhappiness that accompany the everyday life of a self-proclaimed loser. Cathartic in its misery, “Loser” is one of the most earnest songs that BIGBANG’s ever released. It also became one of the most popular of 2015, topping the World Album Chart for a time before losing its spot to other songs from the MADE series.

5. “Love Song”

While typically veering towards heavily produced electronic dance tracks, “Love Song” is a standout tune in BIGBANG’s discography because of its heavy use of rock. The first single of its kind in the group’s repertoire, the ballad utilizes building strings and overlapping vocals to create an uplifting tone despite the otherwise depressing lyrics. Like the more recently released “Let’s Not Fall In Love,” “Love Song” also differentiates itself from BIGBANG’s typical sound by having T.O.P start things off with a reverberating verse backed by electric guitar. At the time of its release, G-Dragon expressed that the rock elements were BIGBANG’s attempt at creating a warmer, more familiar sound for listeners to seek comfort in rather than the more exhilarating  electronic style the band typically favors.

4. “Bad Boy”

The group’s 2012 Alive album and the repackage Still Alive, which included “Bad Boy, “Blue,” “Fantastic Baby” and “Monster,” is objectively one of the group’s best eras and each song is iconic in its own way. But “Bad Boy” stands out from the others by being the epitome of BIGBANG’s unique brand of evocative hip-hop. With it’s mellow raps and airy flow the song is a creeping earworm that hits all the right notes without much apparent effort and was an early adopter of the tropical elements so common in Korean hip-hop nowadays.

3. “Lies”

There’s never been a more recognizable dial tone in Korean history as the one in the start of “Lies.” The 2007 hip-pop song was the first hit from the quintet, which had previously edged away from pop to rely more heavily on typical rap and R&B sounds. The thumping chorus and rhymes, especially T.O.P’s hyperactive rap halfway through the song, paired with the delicate vocals won over South Korea and was one of the year’s most memorable songs.

2. “Fantastic Baby”

It would, arguably, be enough to say “Wow!” and end this blurb here. Even though it’s in second place, “Fantastic Baby” was the first song to cross international boundaries with it’s then-groundbreaking EDM style. The party track contains some of the group’s most recognizable lines ,“Wow. Fantastic baby” and “Boomshakalaka!” in particular, and remains a highlight of BIGBANG’s repertoire at any concert. Whereas the group’s latest attempt to recreate the fun of “Fantastic Baby,” last year’s “Bang Bang Bang,” isn’t quite up to par, the 2012 hit is nothing short of fantastic.

1. “Haru Haru”

While “Lies” rocketed the group to fame the year before, it was “Haru Haru” that made the quintet what it is today with its display of BIGBANG’s capacity for both emotive melodies and building dance songs. Heart-wrenching music video aside, the G-Dragon co-written “Haru Haru” (“Day By Day” in English) is the peak of BIGBANG’s artistry to this day. Through the expressiveness of the member’s voices and the overall composition, the song was a breakout hit in 2008 and one of the best-selling Korean songs ever at the time.

Weaving in and out of tempos seamlessly and forcing a sense of anxiety on the listener through the beating undercurrent, “Haru Haru” is an experiential masterpiece. The song begins simply enough with a piano tune and breathy vocals until T.O.P’s deep bass rap explodes to transform it into a hip-hop ballad like none other. G-Dragon and T.O.P’s contrasting rap tones play off one another to offer a sharp change from the passionate vocals of Daesung, Taeyang, and Seungri, while the orchestral accompaniment draws the whole thing to a symphonic peak. Nearly ten years after its release, “Haru Haru” is still the epitome of BIGBANG’s sound.

Pre-debut photos and anecdotes of BIGBANG

Kpop Herald has put together some past and present photos, as well as some interesting facts, about each member of BIGBANG, a Korean boy band group that debuted in 2006. The photos on the left are their pre-debut images, and the photos on the right are post-debut images.

G-Dragon

G-Dragon said in a 2010 interview with Asia E, a local newspaper, that he was initially hesitant about debuting as a member of BIGBANG.

“I had entered YG Entertainment and received training for six years, thinking that I would either be a solo artist or would be assigned as a duo with Taeyang. At the time, I had preconceptions about ‘idol groups.’ I don‘t anymore, but at the time, I did. And I dreaded wearing the same clothes and dancing the same dances as other members. I seriously considered moving to another agency at the time,” said G-Dragon.

T.O.P.

restmb_jhidxmake (2)

T.O.P. was initially rejected by the YG Entertainment when he auditioned because he was considered “too chubby” to fit an idol group. He exercised very hard, lost a lot of weight, and auditioned again six months later. When Yang Hyun-suk, CEO of YG Entertainment, said to T.O.P, “Wow, you lost a lot of weight,” T.O.P. responded, “I exercised hard because I really want to enter this agency.” T.O.P. was accepted after his second audition for the agency.

Seungri

restmb_jhidxmake (3)

Seungri owns a dance academy franchise, with five of them operating in separate locations. Some of the past students of the academy include high-profile K-pop celebrities such as 2NE1’s Minzy, Kara‘s Goo Hara, TVXQ’s Yunho, and B.A.P.‘s Zelo.

Seungri’s path to success was not without obstacles. Prior to his debut as a BIGBANG member, he auditioned in “Let‘s Coke Play! Battle Shinhwa,” a reality TV series. After he failed in the audition and went back to Gwangju, he said it was hard to withstand others talking about him. “My classmates were talking about me, saying that I was bad at singing. Even my homeroom teacher told me that I am probably not meant to be a singer and that I should seek another path. She was a very good-looking woman, but when she said that, I was hurt and she thus seemed very ugly. And I was motivated to work harder, because I couldn’t stand people saying that I cannot become a celebrity.”

Taeyang

restmb_jhidxmake (4)

Taeyang said in an interview with Asia E in 2010 that he initially attended acting classes. “I attended the classes more because my cousins were, not because I was into acting. After attending the classes for a while, I decided that acting is not what I really want to do.” However, it was through his acting classes that Taeyang was able to become a singer. Through his acting classes, Taeyang was able to audition to feature as Little Sean in the music video of Jinusean, a Korean hip hop duo. This in turn let him meet Yang Hyun Suk, the CEO of YG Entertainment, the agency of BIGBANG. Taeyang told Yang that he wanted to join the YG Entertainment. “Mr. Yang told me that I am more than welcome to, and he told me that he will give me a call.” However, Taeyang received no call from Yang after months of waiting. On his 12th birthday, Taeyang called Yang and said, “Why did you not give me a call?” He said Yang‘s response was, “I forgot. You can come to the agency and start your training from tomorrow.”

Daesung

restmb_jhidxmake (5)

Daesung was injured in a car accident in 2009. In 2011 he was involved in a car accident in which a motorcyclist died. He was later cleared of charges of the accountability for the motorcyclist’s death. He said in “Healing Camp, Aren‘t You Happy.” a talk show on SBS in 2012, “It hurt me the most when I saw online comments of people calling me a murderer. Comments along those lines made me feel suicidal at the time.”
