BIGBANG’s anniversary show makes history

22 August 2016

K-pop boy group BIGBANG made Korean history Saturday night, with their 10th anniversary concert drawing a crowd of 65,000 – the largest ever at a single music event.
Even the sweltering weather couldn’t stop fans from attending the show, titled “0. to. 10”, at World Cup Stadium in Sangam-dong, western Seoul. Many in the crowd even sang acapella renditions of the group’s songs as they waited for the evening to start.
The five-member group opened the show with “My Heaven” and continued for about three hours, performing 22 songs.
Between songs, the group expressed its gratitude to the fans who filled the gigantic football stadium.
“I was concerned [about this concert] because we’ve been performing a lot overseas,” said G-Dragon, a member of the group. “But now I realize we’re popular here, too.”
The large crowd also came as a surprise to member Taeyang. “I didn’t really expect to see this huge of a crowd,” he said. “We should have done this concert for two days.”
Singer-rapper Psy also made a guest appearance at the show.
Both BIGBANG and Psy belong to YG Entertainment.
“I remember BIGBANG just did their first performance for TV when I was promoting ‘Celebrity’ in 2006 and Yang Hyun-suk [the head of YG Entertainment] told me, ‘You need to keep an eye on them because they are going to kill everybody,’ and they really made it,” Psy said during the concert.
BIGBANG first broke into the music scene in 2006.
Since then, the five members have been performing as a whole as well as in spin-off groups. G-Dragon and Taeyang, for example, released a digital single in 2014, and G-Dragon and T.O.P released an album in 2010. Daesung has also released a couple of solo songs.
Apart from the anniversary concert, BIGBANG is celebrating its 10th year in various ways. In June, the group released a documentary film, “BIGBANG Made,” in theaters nationwide and are currently holding an exhibition titled “The Exhibition: A to Z” at a gallery in Seongsu-dong, eastern Seoul until October.
Since the majority of BIGBANG’s members are in their late 20s, they will likely enlist in the army starting in the second half of this year.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that YG Entertainment has reaped nearly 10 billion won ($8.9 million) from Saturday’s concert.

[Star Talk Talk] BIGBANG to Release 3rd Regular Album to Round Off their 10th Anniversary Celebrations

image.jpeg

[OSEN=박소영 기자] The whole world has its eyes on BIGBANG, who has become 10-years old this year. They’ve achieved so much and come so far. Nothing would be more of a cherry on the cake in celebrating the 10th anniversary of their debut than BIGBANG releasing a new album.

On September 8 local time, CNN’s Talk Asia revealed its interview with BIGBANG. Talk Asia is a talk show that explores global leaders in various fields.

BIGBANG talked frankly about the past ten years and their plans for the future. Since the group took not only Korea but also the whole world by storm after their debut in August 2006, they had a lot to talk about.

BIGBANG revealed their ambition and said, ““We always think the future a lot. We have a lot of things to do, but like always, we will continue having fun. We want to look at the big picture and do things that we enjoy doing, and we want to set a good example for the next generation.”

Various projects have been carried out to celebrate BIGBANG’s 10th anniversary: BIGBANG’s movie “BIGBANG MADE” hit the box office on June 30, and the 10th anniversary concert “0.TO.10” was successfully held last month. The “A TO Z” exhibition opened on August 5 and will continue until October 30.

But for the fans, there is one important thing that’s missing. BIGBANG released two singles every month from May to August last year, but they have yet to release the complete “MADE” album, which would become BIGBANG’s 3rd regular album.

BIGBANG fans have been waiting for a new album for eight years now, every since the release of BIGBANG’s 2nd regular album in 2008. They are literally screaming for a new album, and they have been patient too.

Fans want G-DRAGON to “work his ass off” and finish the 3rd album with this year. At a show on Naver V App, G-DRAGON said that this year is a lucky year for BIGBANG and so he will see to it that the album comes out within this year.

Releasing the 3rd album will surely round off the celebrations for BIGBANG’S 10th anniversary.

During their Interview with CNN, BIGBANG Says, “We’re the happiest when the five of us are together”

[스포츠조선=이유나 기자] CNN, the world’s most prominent news channel, interviewed BIGBANG to mark the 10th anniversary of their debut.

At 4:30 (Hong Kong local time) on September 8, the interview with BIGBANG on CNN’s Talk Asia was revealed.

Talk Asia is CNN’s main talk show that explores global leaders in various fields. Former US president Bill Clinton, world-renowned fashion designer Carl Lagerfeld, singer song-writer Pharrell Williams, PSY, and EPIK HIGH appeared as guests on the show.

BIGBANG members talked about the past ten years and their future plans on the show.

CNN Seoul Correspondent Paula Hancocks interviewed BIGBANG, and she started the interview by asking, “Last year, you made more money than Maroon 5, the highest-paid all-male group in America. You are bigger than all of the bands in South Korea. What makes you different?”

BIGBANG answered, “Music tends to become a bit standardized after a while, but I think with the five of us, each of us bring our own personalities and talent on stage.”

When Paula Hancocks asked, “You have literally grown from boys to men together. How do you manage to do that and still make it look fun?” TAEYANG replied, “Of course there have been hard times in between, but the more time we spend together, the more time we make each other laugh, the more we have fun together. And over time, that level of closeness becomes more and more, and we’re the happiest when the five of us are together.” G-DRAGON answered, “They’re fellow band members, but they’re also brothers. They’re family. Because we spend so much time together, we have that feeling of intimacy and a bond that is very different from other boy bands.”

When asked about the next 10 years of BIGBANG, they answered, “We always think about that a lot. We have a lot of things to do, but like always, we will continue having fun. We want to look at the big picture and do things that we enjoy doing, and we want to set a good example for the next generation.”

Meanwhile, various projects have been carried out to celebrate BIGBANG’s 10th anniversary: BIGBANG’s movie “BIGBANG MADE” hit the box office on June 30, and the 10th anniversary concert “0.TO.10” was successfully held last month. CNN: Will South Korea’s military service derail K-pop mega-group BIGBANG?

160819152513-k-pop-big-bang-exlarge-169

“Bang, Bang, Bang” is the song title.

It’s an apt name for a track that’s part of a propaganda playlist, which the South Korean government has blasted over the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) to taunt their neighbors and make North Koreans curious about the south.

For BIGBANG, the K-pop megaband behind the 2015 hit, their song being used as a weapon in political warfare is just another sign of their swelling fame — and a chance to win fans in the world’s most reclusive state.

“It’s amusing. Just the fact that it was used in such a place. Especially because the title is ‘Bang, Bang, Bang’,” singer-songwriter Taeyang tells CNN, making the gesture of firing a smoking gun.
Together with G-Dragon, T.O.P, Daesung and Seungri, this 28-year-old is part of one of South Korea’s most successful exports, and one of the biggest music acts in the world today.

Bigger Than Maroon 5

If you live outside of Asia, you’ve probably never heard of BIGBANG.

Yet, in the past year they have made $44 million in pretax earnings, according to the Forbes World’s Highest-Paid Celebrities list. To put that in perspective, America’s highest paid all-male act, Maroon 5, made $33.5 million.

BIGBANG’s label YG Entertainment reports that their latest world tour “MADE” was attended by 1.5 million people, and the group jointly hold the most number 1 singles on Billboard’s World Digital Songs Chart with their label mate PSY.

The K-pop story

The BIGBANG story began 10 years ago, when YG Entertainment — founded in 1997 by one of the first K-pop stars, Yang Hyun-suk — asked five of its promising trainees to form a boy band.

K-pop began in South Korea in the early 90s, and labels such as YG built the nation’s pop industry from the ground up, creating a training scheme that applies the same rigor Koreans approach academic life with to the entertainment industry.

Young aspiring stars are offered sometimes decade-long contracts, which essentially induct them into K-pop boarding schools; there they sleep, eat, drink and spend around 12 hours a day training for fame.

Mobile phones, the internet and romantic relationships, if the rumors are to be believed, are forbidden.

“[The training] was quite harsh,” Daesung, who has also released solo material, tells Talk Asia. “But, to some level, I think you have to have the fundamentals right in the beginning … so even though I was worried, I also think that kind of system has a lot of advantages, as well.”

Indeed, while K-pop is notorious for producing highly manufactured bubblegum groups, BIGBANG have been praised for their individuality and ability to fuse a pop sound with rap, RnB and dance elements.

Of those years spent training, G-Dragon says: “I don’t think of it as a sacrifice, but more as an investment.”

That investment has certainly paid off.

The group has become one of the most successful acts in the hallyu wave — the name given to phenomenon of the rise of Korean entertainment worldwide — an industry that is worth $4.8 million, according to the Korean Trade Investment Promotion Agency.

How big is BIGBANG?

This year, BIGBANG celebrate 10 years in the business together — a feat rarely achieved by their Western counterparts. Justin Timberlake’s springboard band, *NSync, for example, lasted seven years, while British quintet One Direction went on an indefinite hiatus after five years.

BIGBANG say their secret to longevity is good chemistry.

“We are the happiest when us five are together, that kind of relationship is the reason that makes us last longer,” frontman G-Dragon tells CNN.

Taeyang adds: “We normally tell each other right away when we don’t like something. So we don’t hide such negative feelings, don’t let it grow … I think that’s the biggest secret to lasting for 10 years”.

The landmark anniversary was marked by an exhibition in Seoul, documenting their career, celebratory concerts and the release of a documentary-style film.

BIGBANG about to implode?

But at what is perhaps the height of their fame — they’ve made seven studio albums — the group are facing a huge hurdle.

Under South Korean law, men over the age of 18 must be conscripted for at least 21 months into the military before the age of 35 — it’s considered a rite of passage.

While some are exempted for medical reasons, it’s a huge taboo in South Korea to skirt this duty; for celebrities, doing so could have a severe impact on their careers. Although it should be noted PSY had a wrangle with the government about serving his military service (before serving 2 terms), which appears not to have held back his global success.

Inside the world of a K-pop superstar

As the oldest member, T.O.P is likely to be called up first. He puts an upbeat spin on two years out of the business.

“I think I am just the type of person who leave things to destiny,” T.O.P says.

“It’s not about what will happen if I am gone for a while, but more about being positive, (I want to) just do well with what I am doing right now without thinking too much.

“Let’s have a new start when I come back with that kind of positive mind.”

Perhaps after a decade in the K-pop industry, two years to reflect would be welcome.

But — despite various solo careers, and side projects — the group is adamant they will eventually return united.

Taeyang says: “If it was the end of BIGBANG, we wouldn’t be laughing while doing this interview right now.”

BIGBANG’s Interview With CNN: “We’re Happiest When The 5 Of Us Are Together”

September 8, CNN’s “Talk Asia” revealed an exclusive interview with BIGBANG for the group’s 10th anniversary.

“Talk Asia” is a program that invites as guests global leaders from all walks of life, including former U.S. president Bill Clinton, designer Karl Lagerfeld, musician Pharrell Williams, PSY, Epik High, and more.

Through the broadcast, BIGBANG discussed the 10-year history of their music, and their plans for the future.

The interview highlights some of BIGBANG’s achievements:

  • For the past year, they surpassed the annual earnings of Maroon 5, the highest earning band in America (BIGBANG earned $44 million in the past year, over $10 million more than Maroon 5, according to Forbes)
  • 1.5 million attended the group’s last world tour, twice as much as Madonna in 2015
  • 65,000 seats sold for last concert
  • Voted 3rd place in Time 100, a list of the world’s most influential, with more votes than Taylor Swift and Beyonce combined

The group responded to a question about why they’re special: “Performances, over time, become standardized. But the unique characters of our five members really show on stage, and that’s what sets us apart.”

On how they’ve managed to maintain a fun atmosphere all this time, G-Dragon said, “We’re members of a group, but we’re also family. There’s a closeness between us that’s on a completely different level than other boy bands.” Taeyang added, “It’s hard at times, but the more we’re together, the more we laugh. We’re the happiest when the five of us are together.”

The BIGBANG members went on, saying that they are always thinking about the next 10 years. “There’s a lot we have left to do, but as we have done so far, we’re going to have fun doing it. We’re going to think even bigger, and we’re going to become good models for the generations to come, while doing what we love.”

Yang Jung Won Addresses Speculations About Relationship With BIGBANG’s Seungri

On the September 6 episode of MBC Every1 program “Video Star,” fitness instructor and rookie actress Yang Jung Won appears for the show’s “Hot Body Special.”

During the show, the MCs ask Yang Jung Won about her relationship with BIGBANG member Seungri, whom she is known to be close with.

“I heard that [Seungri] gives those difficult-to-get BIGBANG tickets to Yang Jung Won and even paid for her mother’s tab at a restaurant before. How did you get to know Seungri?” the MCs asks.

“For a while now, we’ve had a close nuna-dongseng relationship,” Yang Jung Won says. “I went out to eat [with my mom] and coincidentally ran into [Seungri]. We ate separately, and when we were finished, we discovered that without saying anything, Seungri had paid for the tab and left.”

Yang Jung Won

“For the concert tickets too, even though I don’t tell [Seungri] I want to go, he says to me, ‘If you want to come watch, I’ll get them for you,'” Yang Jung Won reveals.

The MCs speculate whether Yang Jung Won’s relationship with Seungri is truly just a nuna-dongseng relationship, but she insists their relationship is completely platonic. “There’s nothing like that. He knows everything about my dating life, and I know everything about his, so there’s nothing between us,” Yang Jung Won says.

After all these years, BIGBANG is still considered as the kings of K-pop. While all other K-pop bands have disbanded after the 5-year mark, BIGBANG has proven that there is no such thing as a K-pop band curse. So what is their secret?

BIGBANG Updates reports that during their CNN Talk Asia interview, BIGBANG revealed as how they have survived the K-pop band curse. The interviewer mentioned that after being together for a decade, BIGBANG must have drove each other crazy.

Surprisingly, BIGBANG lead rapper T.O.P. (Choi Seung-hyun) shared that they have not fought over the past 10 years that they have been together as a group. The secret to this well-maintained relationship is that they all have different qualities and they respect one another for that.

Taeyang (Dong Young-bae) further explained that when there’s an incident that they don’t like what the other did or said, they will point that out right away so conflicts will be avoided. “We don’t hide negative feelings,” Taeyang shared. “Don’t let it grow, just tell each other right away, ‘you are wrong with that.'”

It is safe to say that BIGBANG has learned to deal with each other and their respect for one another lead them to become the most successful K-pop band to date. Even though there are new K-pop bands forming left and right, BIGBANG has maintained their popularity and success by still dominating the charts every time they release an album.

People change when they fall in love, and, so did BIGBANG member Taeyang, who is currently dating South Korean actress Min Hyo Rin. The singer-songwriter, who has been in a relationship since 2013, revealed that he discovered his romantic side after meeting his lady love.

During his interview with Dazed and Confused, Taeyang opened up about his relationship with the 30-year-old. The boy group member showcased a completely different side of him. He said, “Honestly, I think people change after meeting someone you love. I didn’t have many romantic relationships, and the romantic scent inside me was beginning to disappear.”

The 28-year-old continued with some filled poetic words: “I felt ‘dry’. However, after I fell in love with my girlfriend, I recovered the romantic side of me. It feels as if rain is softly touching my dry heart. Thanks to love, I feel a lot more relaxed now. For that alone, I am thankful for love.”

Meanwhile, the power couple of the K-pop industry does not get to spend much time with each other because of their busy schedules. Once Hyo Rin revealed: ” He’s not in Korea often because of his schedules overseas, but we try to meet whenever he is in Korea.”

Dishing out details of their typical date style, the former model shared: “We eat good food, and just casually spend time together. We both love to eat, and have similar tastes, so our opinions don’t usually go against each other.”
