Weirder, cheaper, more diverse: art market players woo Asia’s next generation of collectors

The volatility of the art market has prompted players to make long-term investments by cultivating a new generation of collectors through initiatives to attract a younger crowd in the region.

Auction houses and art fairs eyeing the potential of those aged 40 or younger are offering works of art that are more experimental, and which are at a relatively affordable price range.

And they are boosting their presence on social media and their sales on digital platforms in order to draw the attention of these new buyers.
For its coming autumn sale, Sotheby’s Hong Kong has teamed up with musician and actor T.O.P, from K-pop sensation BIGBANG, for a contemporary art sale titled #TTTOP on October 3. The sale is “curated” by the 28-year-old singer.

But K-pop credentials aside, Jonathan Wong, director (Asia) and senior specialist of the contemporary Asian art department at Sotheby’s, said T.O.P, whose real name is Choi Seung-hyun) comes from an artistic family and is a well-known art collector.

Wong said that there is a strong growth in young collectors in Asia, particularly in mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. He said over 20 per cent of Sotheby’s clients in Asia were aged 40 or under – a percentage that is higher than the auction house’s worldwide average.
Forty per cent of the first-time bidders at the Hong Kong sales were aged 40 or under, he added.
“Many of them come from [families with a background of collecting]. But compared with their seniors, who might be more into traditional and classical works of art, the young generation is more interested in contemporary art,” Wong said.

“Many of them have studied abroad. They travel around the world to visit museums and art fairs. Their Asian cultural roots and experiences in the West make them more receptive towards art across various disciplines and cultural boundaries.”

Sotheby’s is counting on T.O.P’s star power to bring in younger collectors.

The #TTTOP sale features 25 lots of Western and Asian contemporary artwork, with a total pre-sale estimate of HK$90 million, excluding the buyer’s premium.

Highlights include Jean-Michel Basquiat’s painting Infantry (1983), which has a pre-sale estimate of HK$30 million to HK$40 million, and a series by Keith Haring from the collection of David LaChapelle, which is expected to fetch an estimated HK$4.5 million to HK$6 million. Specially commissioned works by Kohei Nawa and Takashi Murakami are also among the lots.
Part of the proceeds will go to the Asian Cultural Council.

Wong admitted that having T.O.P on board helped draw a younger crowd, whose broad interests affected the auction house’s selection of consignments.
“Our recent sales [included] more photography, video and installations, which did not exist in our past sales,” he said, adding that the auction house also hosts mid-season sales offering a range of works including design and collectibles.

Art fairs are also targeting a similar crowd. The Asia Contemporary Art Show, which opens to the public on Friday at the Conrad Hong Kong, highlights works by young artists such as Wang Min and Luo Yang, both born in the mid-1980s.

Mark Saunderson, co-founder and director of the show, said one-third of its visitors were aged 35 or younger, according to its exit poll. He said the fair offered works of art starting at the lower end of five digits, a price that young professionals could afford.
Besides offering a diverse range of artwork at reasonable prices, Saunderson said players in the market must master the art of social media if they wanted to tap the young crowd.

“This new generation of art lovers will be buying art, and hopefully will become collectors in the future. It is important to speak their language,” he said.

“The acceleration of social media means that they search for information and buy works of art in ways that are different from their parents. It helps us to keep up with our potential audience.”

BIGBANG’s T.O.P Finally Hits Limit With Sasaengs, Gives A Final Warning

BIGBANG’s T.O.P Finally Hits Limit With Sasaengs, Gives A Final Warning

BiGBANG’s T.O.P has finally had enough of sasaeng fans not respecting his privacy.

On the evening of September 16, T.O.P posted a message on Instagram, saying, “To my Chinese fans… Please don’t come to my house… Hearing my doorbell ring all night, I’m scared to death. My heart’s going to explode. I have been patient until now, but from now on I’m going to report it all to the police.” T.O.P then suggested a place they might visit, saying, “For a tourist attraction, Gwanghwamun is so beautiful.”

Since June 2016 alone, many celebrities have spoken out about sasaengs, including GOT7’s Youngjae, Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon, 2PM’s Junho, and EXO’s Lay.

With rising incidents involving sasaeng fans stalking and visiting their favorite K-pop idols’ homes unannounced, BIGBANG‘s T.O.P has had enough and has issued a warning.

On the 16th, T.O.P, the eldest member and power rapper of BIGBANG, has taken to his official Instagram account to plea to his Chinese sasaeng, or privacy-invading, fans to stop coming to his home in Seoul, South Korea.

The star uploaded an odd, burgundy-colored photo with a caption that reads, “To all the Chinese fans.. please stop visiting my home.. (crying emoticon). I keep jumping and flinching and getting scared to death every time you guys press the doorbell throughout the middle of the night. My heart is about to explode.

Though it is clear that the BIGBANG member is trying to keep his plea as simple and light-hearted as possible with the silly choices of words and use of emoticons, T.O.P then continues his caption with a warning that reads, “I’ve tried to let it go and I’ve held back as long as possible, but from now on I will be reporting it to the police.

Many netizens have left comments of pity and worry for the rapper, as well as agreed that sasaeng fans of any kind are too much to handle and dangerous as they have been capable of breaking into celebrities’ homes, bank accounts, phone records, and more over the past few years.

Even fellow BIGBANG member, G-DRAGON, has issued a warning to sasaeng fans visiting his family home several years back on his own official Twitter account as well.

“Celebrity of celebrities”… The reason for G-DRAGON’s formidable influence and fame

[스포츠서울] G-DRAGON, the leader of BIGBANG that has recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of their debut, was born to be different and special.

G-DRAGON, who has already been recognized for his special talent in music, fashion, and art, presented perfect acting in MBC TV’s “The Infinite Challenge – 2016 MoonhanSangsa” aired on September 11.

G-DRAGON boasts unrivalled presence in the music scene. His influence has long been recognized, and G-DRAGON is called the “celebrity of celebrities”. Jeon Yeong-ju, a fortune-teller famous in the Gangnam area, analyzed the fortune and physiognomy of G-DRAGON, an artist who is never content with his status-quo and consistently expanding the scope of his career including music and fashion, to establish himself as a brand.

G-DRAGON was born with the fortune of “top-notch celebrity”. His fortune is impeccable from childhood until later years in his life. Ordinary stars have one so-called “peach flower” (an energy that gives irresistible attractiveness and sex appeal) in their fortunes, but G-DRAGON has three of them. In addition, he has meticulous and perfectionist personality. He was also born with unmatched talent and knows how to work hard. Just as his destiny tells, G-DRAGON is known to dress himself up perfectly from head to toe before going out. Naturally, G-DRAGON’s styling is widely recognized.

Nevertheless, G-DRAGON is rather unlucky in love. For this year and the next year, G-DRAGON’s “peach flowers” will fully blossom, but that is for love from the public rather than from his better half. Notably, his fortune for business is good from this year until the next year. Until mid-October this year, buying a building or land in Jeju Island of Korea or overseas will be very profitable for G-DRAGON. After building a big fame for his music, G-DRAGON is now trying new fields. However, it is now time for him to save himself, rather than pour all his energy into new attempts. G-DRAGON is destined to extremely concentrate on what he is interested in, but he should be careful for such concentration this year, especially about obsession with religion.

From January to March next year, G-DRAGON’s fortune will go through the period of the “punishment from the heaven”, so everything will get worse for him. During that period, G-DRAGON should be especially careful about traffic accidents. From April to June, 2017, G-DRAGON’s fortune will aspire toward overseas expansion, so approximately two overseas contracts would be concluded. During that period, he is destined to make a big achievement. From July to September, 2017, G-DRAGON’s business will go smoothly, but he should be careful about working in partnership with someone else.

G-DRAGON’s physiognomy is as good as his fortune. In physiognomy, G-DRAGON has a face like a fox that has characteristics of both man and woman’s face, so he is loved by everyone. Five important points on his face are all well-structured. His ears are slightly bent backward and the tips of the ears are sharp, which indicates that G-DRAGON is intelligent and kind, to be loved by everyone with good interpersonal skills. Plus, the tip of his ears is located below his eyebrows, near the end of his nose. That implies G-DRAGON has a stable, cheerful, and artistic personality. His forehead is rather feminine and slightly protruding, with M-shaped hairline, indicating that G-DRAGON has clear likes and dislikes and strong resolution. He is resolved and has good reasoning abilities, so he is usually not intimidated by anything. His mouth is that of a lion and that is the sign that G-DRAGON is smart and well-rounded. According to physiognomy, G-DRAGON would achieve big success academically as well, if he pursues academics someday.

Even though G-DRAGON’s eyes are mostly covered with thick smoky makeup on the stage, he actually has narrow and drooping eyes. That kind of eyes is the sign of kind, considerate, and prudent personality, easy for others to rely on. On the other hand, those eyes also imply a narrow-sighted perspective, so G-DRAGON should be careful about getting deceived by others. G-DRAGON also has the eyes of “peach flowers”, so he is susceptible to loneness and it might be hard for him to maintain a serious relationship for a long period of time. His eyes suggest that he is destined to be loved by many, not by only one person. The white part of his eyes is revealed under the pupils, which indicates that G-DRAGON is ambitious, tenacious, and hard-working. He is also elegant, self-confident, and uncompromising.

G-DRAGON debuted at an early age and has experienced and achieved so many things, but he should now save his energy and talent for some time. He should be especially careful about obsession with religion and traffic accidents, and he has to take extra care of his well-being in the years of rooster, cow, and color white.

BIGBANG TAEYANG’s perfect service for fans in celebration of Thanksgiving day… Happy VIPs [V-LIVE]

[OSEN=박소영 기자] “Thanksgiving date with TAEYANG”

BIGBANG’s TAEYANG made songpyeon, half-moon-shapedricecake for Korean Thanksgiving, for the first time in his life. TAEYANG invited fans from Euijeongbu City, his hometown, to have a Thanksgiving Day date. TAEYANG played Korean traditional games with them, presenting perfect service for fans.

On September 14 at 7PM, TAEYANG’s “TAEYANG On-Air – Midnight Date with TAEYANG” was broadcasted on NAVER Special V-APP. TAEYANG decided to make songpyeon with three fans from Euijeongbu City, in the open air.

It was the first time for TAEYANG to make songpyeon. He was not good at making it, but he did his best. Watching TAEYANG working hard to make songpyeon, viewers of the broadcasting requested TAEYANG to “knead the rice dough with his bare knuckles”, as TAEYANG’s nickname is “the bare knuckles of Euijeongbu”.

Then, TAEYANG asked about rumors about him to fans with him, and one of them answered, “They say that when you were a student, you ran away by jumping off the window of a running bus, if somebody in the bus recognized you”, to make all viewers burst into big laughter.

In Korea, there is a traditional belief that the one who makes pretty songpyeon will have pretty daughters. TAEYANG boasted songpyeon he made, saying, “I want to have a pretty daughter someday. I’m not sure, but she will be a cute girl with round eyes and face, I may have to name her roundy”.

While the songpyeon that TAEYANG and fans made were being steamed, the four people decided to play a game of yut, Korean traditional game. They divided into two teams to involve in the competitions and carried out missions in the middle, such as explaining words with gestures, drawing, facial expressions, and moving butts.

Then, TAEYANG was given an individual mission. When each team records yut or mo in the game of yut, TAEYANG had to grant fans’ wishes. TAEYANG sang “EYES, NOSE, LIPS” in live performance, to make the fans happy.

While TAEYANG and fans were having fun time together, songpyeon was ready. TAEYANG made beverages and gave them to the fans, saying, “My favorite fruit is peach. I made this peach nectar by myself. Let’s taste it together”.

Then, TAEYANG made a big smile, saying, “This year marks the 10th anniversary of my debut and I was so happy to meet people who have liked and supported BIGBANG for such a long time. I was even happier, as I don’t have that many people to spend this Thanksgiving holidays with”.

SOTHEBY’S MAGAZINE – OCTOBER 2016 T.O.P of His Game

SOTHEBY’S MAGAZINE – OCTOBER 2016T.O.P of His Game

BY MEGHAN DAILEY | 12 SEP 2016

HONG KONG – The musician, rapper, actor and art collector known as T.O.P has been a member of Asia’s reigning K-pop band, BIGBANG, since 2006. Wildly popular in Asia and on the verge of becoming a global sensation, K-pop combines hip-hop, pop and electronic music into a hybrid genre that pushes boundaries in a post-postmodern whirl of musical styles, international fashion trends and synchronised dancing. It is perhaps not coincidental that K-pop’s cultural and geographical mash-up is congruent with T.O.P’s taste in art. Over the past few years, the 28-year-old multi-hyphenate has been steadily acquiring works by such blue-chip names as Gerhard Richter and Rudolf Stingel while also collecting Asian artists, including Takashi Murakami, Kohei Nawa and Park Jina, many of whom are his friends.

GARY SO @ MAD CARROT PRODUCTION
“Western collectors tend to focus on Western contemporary art, but in Asia there is an openness to combining both,” says T.O.P. He has become a model for a new generation of Asian collectors who, just starting out, are expanding the definition of what a contemporary art collection can be.
That progressive attitude guided his curatorial approach to #TTTOP, a special auction of Western and Asian contemporary art that will be held at Sotheby’s Hong Kong on 3 October.

KIM WHANKI, FLIGHT, CIRCA 1960. ESTIMATE HK$3,500,000–5,500,000. ($451,255–709,115).
The sale is the result of a yearlong collaboration between the auction house and T.O.P, and a portion of its proceeds will be donated to the Asian Cultural Council, which provides opportunities to emerging Asian artists. His choices, he explains, reflect his “eclectic personal taste and wider vision for contemporary art as a whole”: Kohei Nawa, Teppei Kaneuji, Tomoo Gokita and Park Jina; American postwar icons Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring; and works by Korean masters such as Park Seobo, Lee Ufan, Chung Sanghwa, Paik Nam June and Kim Whanki.
As it happens, Kim Whanki (1913–1974) was one of many painters in T.O.P’s extended family. Although the young star grew up surrounded by artists, he rejected the notion of becoming one himself. But he confesses to having always had an acquisitive side. “I have always been a collector,” he explains. “I started when I was a child, collecting toy blocks.”

FROM THE COLLECTION OF YUSAKU MAEZAWA

JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT, INFANTRY, 1983. ESTIMATE HK$30,000,000–40,000,000 ($3,867,900–5,157,200).
As a teen, it was limited-edition sneakers. “It wasn’t exactly the shoes that excited me,” T.O.P says. “I simply got a kick out of the sight of similar objects lined up neatly, one next to another.” His fascination with the phenomenon of variation within a single category continued in his early twenties, when he started buying the work of important modern designers like Pierre Jeanneret and Jean Prouvé.
Some of those design pieces make a memorable appearance in scenes from the artful black-and-white video for T.O.P’s hit single “Doom Dada,” released in autumn 2013. Directed by Seo Hyun Seung in collaboration with T.O.P, “Doom Dada” is notable for its sophisticated visual imagery. Full of stylistic and thematic nods to the films of Ji-woon Kim and Stanley Kubrick, the video layered with high-art allusions, including the title’s obvious homage to the early-20th-century avant-garde movement, a name-drop of Basquiat, and sets that feature the design objects from the singer’s collection against the backdrop of an enlarged reproduction of a painting of a deer – one of Kim Whanki’s best-known works. In T.O.P’s world, art is never far from the music.

KOHEI NAWA, PIXCELL-T.O.P (DOOM DADA), 2016. ESTIMATE HK$50,000–80,000 ($6,446–10,314).
In fact, among several new collaborative pieces created especially for the Sotheby’s auction is a work by his friend Nawa is directly connected to “Doom Dada.” One of the Japanese artist’s signature PixCell figures, PixCell-T.O.P (DOOM DADA), represents the singer with another character from the video, both depicted toylike, holding hands and covered with tiny transparent bubbles.
Co-producing works for the sale with Nawa, as well as with Murakami and others, was particularly enjoyable for T.O.P, who is respected for his dedication to supporting emerging talent in Asia. As he sees it, the #TTTOP auction represents the ideal opportunity to promote Asia’s cultural assets to a global art world – and to his more than 5 million Instagram followers. “With so much interest in Korean music and culture right now, it’s a good time to bring attention to young artists,” he says. “I’m like an ambassador.”

Meghan Dailey is executive editor of Sotheby’s magazine and has written about art for The New Yorker, Interview, W and other publications.
