YG vs. non-YG, who can beat BIGBANG? [End-of-year music awards]

[OSEN=??? ??] Only three months are left until the end of the year  2015. As the end of the year is approaching, Korea’s music scene is getting hot once again. That is because a series of end-of-year music awards are waiting for music fans. Beginning from Melon Music Awards scheduled for , a series of music awards including “2015 MAMA” and music awards of public TV networks will be held until early next year.

The meaning of the grand prize at those music awards are not like in the past, as prizes for each section are gaining more significant meaning, but anyway, someone should be the winner of the trophies. Music fans are paying the biggest attention to who will receive the man’s and woman’s rookie awards,  album of the year award, song of the year award, and singer of the year award. Although a little but premature, fans are merrily predicting the winners of those awards.

The most remarkable achievements have been made mostly by YG Entertainment for this year. It is highly likely that the competition for music awards will be between YG artists and non-YG artists.

In the year 2015, BIGBANG swept all major music charts. Starting from “LOSER” and “BAE BAE” released , “BANG BANG BANG” and “WE LIKE 2 PARTY” were released in June, “SOBER” and “IF YOU” in July, and “LET’S NOT FALL IN LOVE” and “ZUTTER” in August.

Those songs made this year’s summer “the season of BIGBANG”. BIGBANG’s new songs released from May to August this year swept not only the top rankings on music charts, but also No.1 trophies of TV music shows. The only rival for BIGBANG to compete for the No.1 was BIGBANG themselves.

Then, the baton was passed to “monstrous rookie” iKON. iKON released “MY TYPE” in mid-September  and “chewed up” music charts even before their official debut. “RHYTHM TA” and “AIRPLANE” unveiled on October 1 with the official debut also fascinated music fans immediately.

However, the power of SM Entertainment, the biggest rival for YG, is also substantial. SM artists also made big achievements during this year, including SHINee’s “View” released in May, Super Junior who released the 10th anniversary album, and solo vocalists such as Jonghyun, Taeyeon, and Kyuhyun.

To look into the rankings on charts only, past hit songs performed in the “Saturday Music Festival” of MBC’s TV show “The Infinite Challenge” created sensation during the first half of this year. Then, in the second half, hip-hop music enjoyed big popularity because of the big popularity of “Show Me the Money 4?. In the second half, too, songs and artists of a variety of genres excited the music scene.

Music fans are now paying keen attention to whether YG artists will sweep all major prizes of end-of-year music awards or an unexpected dark horse will arise.

BIGBANG’s Seungri Gracefully Deals With Fan Who Jumps Onto Stage During Concert

BIGBANG’s Seungri Gracefully Deals With Fan Who Jumps Onto Stage During Concert

During live situations, unexpected accidents are bound to happen. During a recent concert, BIGBANG’s Seungri proved he was a pro by showing how he dealt with such situations.

Recently, a post was uploaded on a community site with the title “Fan who intruded BIGBANG’s Sydney concert” along with a video.

In the revealed clip, a male fan jumps onto the stage and starts dancing with Seungri during the song “FANTASTIC BABY.”

When the bodyguards try to take the fan down, Seungri gestures that everything is fine. After they enjoy a dance together, he personally escorts the fan down to the bottom of the stage. Taeyang, who had been observing from the sidelines, gives the fan a high five.

This incident happened on October 18 in Sydney, Australia during BIGBANG’s “MADE” world tour.

Meanwhile the group just finished a concert in Melbourne, Australia on October 21. The “MADE” world tour will continue to be held in Macao, Hong Kong from October 23 to 25.

G-Dragon: K Pop Star, Fashion’s New “it” Boy

K Pop star, Kwon Ji Yong, who is better known as G-Dragon, is not just one of the biggest names in Korea, thanks to his membership in boy band, BIGBANG. The 28-year old, who has been described as embodying “Justin Timberlake’s boy bander-turned-credible musician pedigree and Kanye West’s genre-bending artistic daredevilry,” is something of a bona fide street style star; you’ll see him on websites like Vogue, Le-21eme, NY Magazine, and TFL. He’s a front row fixture at just about every Chanel show, and Saint Laurent, Lanvin, Rick Owens, and Hood by Air, too. And as you can likely discern from his music videos (think: head to toe Chanel, Thom Browne, etc.), he’s a major fashion fan. Not surprisingly, he has been gaining traction as a fashion industry insider for the past several years, with an increasing number of designers and publications taking notice.

G-Dragon began gracing the pages of Vogue Korea in 2013, appearing on a special three-cover issue alongside “it” models Soo Joo, Kim Sung Hee, and Ji Hye Park. A 2014 cover saw him posing with Belgian model Hanne Gaby Odiele. He has since covered various issues of W, Dazed & Confused, and Hypebeast, and landed editorials in Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Cosmo, Numero, Esquire, and a number of other Vogues.

His penchant for designer labels (he actually purchases a lot of garments – as opposed to relying on loans or gifts from brands) have found him friends in the industry’s most notable creative directors, ranging from Hedi Slimane to Karl Lagerfeld, the latter of whom he first met in early 2014. As for Slimane, when he took the helm at Saint Laurent in 2012, he reportedly gave G-Dragon first dibs on all of his debut menswear pieces. Turns out, G-Dragon has been closely following Slimane’s work since the designer was in his hey-day at Dior Homme in the mid-2000’s. G-Dragon told Complex in 2013: “I didn’t really like it when it was YSL, but I’ve been a fan since it became Saint Laurent because I’m a huge fan of Hedi Slimane. I’ve been a fan of all the brands Hedi Slimane was a part of—I really liked Dior Homme when he was there, and bought a lot of pieces.”

As for Chanel, you may recall that the pop star – who also produces and tours as a solo artist – has consistently been seated front row at the runway shows for the past several seasons – whether they be in Dallas, Texas, Korea or Paris – dressed in Chanel, of course. More recently, he appeared in the Paris-based house’s Fall/Winter 2015 couture show, which was staged at the “Chanel casino,” alongside other celebrity participants like Kristen Stewart and Julianne Moore.

With such industry credibility, you may not otherwise guess that G-Dragon is a relatively new fixture on the fashion scene. Unlike his more seasoned bandmate, Taeyang, who GQ labeled the “unexpected star of the [June 2013] Paris fashion festivities,” G-Dragon is a bit newer of a fashion darling. As New York Magazine’s The Cut noted in connection with his attendance at the Paris Fashion Week shows in January 2014: “G-Dragon has not appeared at Fashion Week since a brief, pink-haired stint in 2012.”

That’s not to say he hasn’t been curating a well-received fashion persona all the while, with the help of early stylist Ji Eun noona. Recently titled “Fashion’s New It Boy” by Yahoo style, he is consistently spotted – usually in the airport or in concert – in an array of the industry’s most coveted brands, and his garments of choice are not limited to menswear. You may recall the Spring/Summer 2014 Marc Jacobs tasseled jacket he wore; or the Chanel and Céline women’s jackets; or still, the multi-colored fur cape straight from the Saint Laurent womenwear runway. He says he has also taken a liking to Rick Owens, Hood by Air, Thom Browne, and Juun. J. However, his designers of choice tend to change as regularly as his hair color, which has been red, orange, pink, turquois, blue, black, blonde, bronze, and a number of other hues. He’s also a fan of Chrome Hearts, which lead him to collaborate with the brand (hence, the excess of Chrome Hearts gear – from garments and jewelry to skate decks – in his “One of a Kind” music video). The same goes for his involvement with popular Japanese brand, Ambush.

Still, cult status in Korea and recognition in the often-insulated fashion industry does not necessarily equate to celebrity status in the world at large. This, however, appears to be changing for G-Dragon. As BOF noted not too long ago: “When Karl Lagerfeld included G-Dragon in a group photo at the latest Chanel couture show alongside international A-listers like Kristen Stewart and Julianne Moore, it helped elevate the Korean rapper’s status as an ‘it boy’ even higher. G-Dragon had already attained cult status in the West by infiltrating the pages of Dazed & Confused, which chronicles edgier stars from Hallyu cinema, K-pop and other Asian entertainment scenes.” Maybe an even better indication: the depiction of the star in the New York Times’s recent review of BIGBANG’s recent concerts in Newark, New Jersey.

Describing the band as “an outlandishly popular K-pop boy band,” the New York Times’s Jon Caramanica, described the scene as “an extreme, intense, overwhelming Korean pop carnival.” The stand-out member of the group: “G-Dragon, G-Dragon, G-Dragon — so many of the screams here were for G-Dragon, fashion show front-row habitué and collaborator with Diplo and Skrillex.” Caramanica continues on, “G-Dragon is very much at the top [of the group’s hierarchy]. He gets the best clothes.” And considering that he’s been wearing a lot of archival Raf Simons pieces on the group’s recent tour, it’s hard to argue with that.

Though bodyguards came immediately to escort the fan off, Seungri stopped them and continued dancing with the overzealous fan. Afterwards, Seungri even walked the fan offstage.

Netizens commented, "He has a lot of experience, so that's probably why he handled it so well," "He's such a pro," and "This could've easily turned into a dangerous situation."

BIGBANG’s Contract Draw To An End, More Likely to Renew

ig Bang‘s contract with YG Entertainment is coming to an end, but insiders said contract renewal of the group is very likely.
According to a representative, “It looks like BIGBANG has made up their mind to renew their contract with YG Entertainment. Although we can’t know if BIGBANG has already said yes or no to re-signing the contract, it looks like they’ve made their mind to go together (with YGE).”

Many people agreed that BIGBANG should renew their contact with YG Entertainment. The group has been doing a very good impact in the company and there’s no reason YG would let them go. Korean netizens said that renewing their contract with YG Entertainment will be a good choice since BIGBANG has many overseas schedules next year for their world tour. Plus, the members will enter the military from 2016 to 2019, meaning that a there could be a period of years without a full group comeback. They say it would be difficult for a different company to handle these situations, as opposed to YGE.

YG Entertainment simply stated, “It’s difficult to reveal the official stance.”

BIGBANG Members Expected To Extend Contracts With YG Entertainment

Industry insiders speculate that BIGBANG will remain with YG Entertainment, even after their contract expires. According to an exclusive report published by Sports Chosun, the K-pop quintet is approaching their contract renewal date, which has impacted advanced scheduling.

“As the members have yet to renew their contracts, it has been difficult to plan their schedule, for the next year,” said an unnamed source, who works closely with the group.

The article followed increased rumors circulating about the popular boy band, who would become free agents. if they did not renew their contracts with YG. However, the specific terms of their agreements, including the expiration dates of the contracts for each member, have yet to be confirmed by the agency.

Sports Chosun went on to examine the customary progression of exclusive contracts, as they pertain to K-pop stars. According to the article, most artists begin to negotiate the terms of their agreements up to six months before the contract expires. This provides agencies and other companies who are associated with the acts, such as endorsements, adequate time to prepare for any adjustments.

The unnamed source went on to discuss the relevance of their contract renewal and international promotions.

“BIGBANG has yet to determine next year’s international schedule,” said the source.

As one of the leading acts on YG Entertainment, BIGBANG has served as global ambassadors for K-pop. Their large-scale North American MADE tour, garnered attention from top mainstream publications including the New York Times.

BIGBANG debuted in 2006, with the group celebrating nine successful years in Korean entertainment in August 2015.

Sports Chosun concluded the article on a positive note. While YG has yet to issue an official response, sources close to the agency told Sports Chosun, there was “close to 100 percent probability,” that BIGBANG would renew their contracts with YG Entertainment.

TEN THINGS WE LEARNT ABOUT BIGBANG FROM THEIR MADE TOUR IN SYDNEY

theaureview.com_DSC_0618-1.jpg

Well Day 1 of the BIGBANG concerts in Sydney (the boys first ever time performing in Australia!) just ended, and boy was the (long) wait worth it. Let’s just say this VIP will probably be sleeping with a crown-shaped lightstick nightlight for a while.

Cass is going to have a full review of the concert soon, but for now- here are 10 of my observations from Day 1 of BIGBANG’s Made Tour in Sydney!

10. Everyone’s got a lot better at English

Well Seungri of course would never let something as trivial as a language barrier stop him from yapping away, but even Daesung (who is hilarious) and TOP (whose English accent is HOT) have improved.

9. From Haru Haru to Bang Bang Bang

In the live concert news songs sounded so familiar and the old sounded new again. It’s a really well balanced concert, and I think having the live band has a lot to do with keeping the consistency across the discography.

8. Dance Dance Dance… Da Da Dance

I personally think GD is very underrated as a dancer cause that boy can bust out some fantastic movements. Taeyang of course is all into it. TOP’s pretty much Choom TOP though, no change there (not that we’d want that).

7. Seungri literally cannot stop talking

He was loving the crowd and the crowd him- yelling at us to scream louder, making jokes about Melbourne to us (they know, lol) and excitingly swearing and telling us all how he’s going to tell his mother, father, cousin, whoever!, that Sydney is the best. Thanks VI, we love you too!

6. Daesung’s big reveal

“Do you guys want to see my… f**king big… … …. Eyes?”

5. BIGBANG shines individually as well as a group

I personally felt that the solo pieces were the highlight of the concert, showing how each member of BIGBANG is just as solid an artist individually as they are together.

4. Speaking of which…

TOP’s Doom Dada live is life. LIFE.

3. Taeyang is the sun

There’s some magnetic force that shifts your gaze to Taeyang when he’s on stage, maybe his dance moves, maybe the fact that he is just so strong vocally live, maybe its just the fact the cameramen really love him and pan on him more often… Whatever it is, I felt like he was the centre of the concert. And Eyes, Nose, Lips live? Woah.

2. G-Dragon

When GD tells the crowd to stand up, they stand up. Immediately.

1. They seem genuinely really happy to finally be in Australia

This was the boy’s first time visiting and performing in Australia and they kept asking us if we missed them (presumably asking if we had been wanting them to come, since we can’t miss you when you hadn’t ever come before Taeyang!) and telling us how happy they were to finally be in Australia. Cue Seungri telling everyone that it’s the best. Again.

It’s true though, BIGBANG- we are! Please...baby come back!
