From BIGBANG to WINNER & iKON, all the YG brothers at MMA

[OSEN=??? ??] With BIGBANG who has confirmed their performance at “2015 Melon Music Awards” (“MMA”), other YG boy groups WINNER and iKON have also confirmed their performance at the awards.

According to insiders on November 2, WINNER and iKON will perform at the “2015 Melon Music Awards” to be held on the 7 at the Olypmic Gymnastics Hall in Seoul. WINNER who received the rookie of the year award last year will attend the 2015 MMA as a rookie award presenter. That will be WINNER’s first appearance in a music award as a complete team for the first time in 10 months.

iKON who made their official debut on the 1 last month is seen as the most promising nominee for the rookie of the year award of the MMA. The team is highly likely to receive the award, as they have both big fandom and substantial recognition among the public. iKON will attend a music award for the first time in their career, as a nominee for the awards.

BIGBANG has also confirmed their performance at the MMA earlier. As BIGBANG performed as a complete team this year for “MADE” series, BIGBANG’s attendance at the awards bears a special meaning. Notably, since BIGBANG has recently been busy with world tour, the team’s performance at the MMA will be a special gift for Korean fans.

Meanwhile, WINNER has been working on their imminent comeback. The team recently shot two music videos and will shoot two more soon. iKON has postponed the release of their debut album, to gain a stronger momentum. iKON’s debut full album will be released on the 16.

Hollywood Reporter: BIGBANG's Global Influence: How to Build a Boy Band That Lasts

The K-pop quintet’s new tour documentary will premiere Nov. 11 on streaming video service DramaFever

When One Direction takes its “hiatus” next spring, the biggest boy band in the world will for the first time hail not from Europe or the Americas, but from Asia. In fact, anyone attending the South Korean quintet BIGBANG’s current world tour might be convinced that its moment is already here.

The seven-date North American leg of the MADE Tour (named after the group’s latest album) drew a total of 87,000 people last month and was the continent’s biggest and most successful outing by a Korean artist to date. Although it hasn’t reached the household-name status of labelmate Psy, BIGBANG already can make several impressive claims: crossing over as a non-English language act, lasting nearly a decade intact (by comparison, 1D was formed five years ago, and Justin Timberlake left *NSYNC after seven years) and transcending its boy band roots to become a veteran artist still dominating the industry (this summer it tied Psy’s Billboard World Digital Songs record with three No. 1s on the chart).

big_bang_performing.jpg

A trip to BIGBANG’s Staples Center show on Oct. 3 – which earned $1.7 million, good enough to crack the world’s top 10 highest grossing tours that week – revealed the secret to the group’s odds-defying longevity: creative freedom. It’s not a phrase commonly associated with pop acts, especially those churned out by K-pop’s notoriously calculating hit factory. The members of BIGBANG were themselves subject to years of training as teens before label impresario Yang Hyun-suk greenlit their debut in 2006.

Nine years later, the members only slightly pandered to their young female fans via the occasional sheepish “heart” hand gesture. Rather, the image literally projected throughout the concert’s video interludes was perhaps more relatable to their fellow 20-something males in the audience: the band in an extended homage to Reservoir Dogs, racing through the desert in 1970s muscle cars, cavorting with a slew of intimidating-looking supermodels. Western pop acts have long chafed under attempts to police or repress their burgeoning maturity; Korean acts more so. Thus it felt all the more revolutionary when, during BIGBANG’s shaky but charming English onstage banter, one member ribbed another for getting tanked after its Mandalay Bay show the night before.

BIGBANG’s early work was hip hop-inflected with the requisite choreography. Now, the quintet still worked up a sweat alongside the backup dancers, but the moves were loose and felt spontaneous. And the set list, dominated by the eight (!) new singles released this summer, ping-ponged in style from the innuendo-laced trap ditty “Bae Bae” to MGMT-esque “Sober” to the melancholy, acoustic guitar-driven breakup ballad “If You” to “Bang Bang Bang,” which in itself sounds like a mashup of three completely different electro-party bangers.

The group has always been unique for having a relatively high level of creative control over its output. Nowadays every track is co-written by frontman and rapper G-Dragon, whose eclectic tastes have made him a rising star in international music and fashion circles in recent years. The fact that he hasn’t pulled a Timberlake despite three highly successful solo releases is perhaps as much a testament to an ironclad K-pop contract as to loyalty, but BIGBANG’s continued willingness to stick together can also be credited to the fact that each member has been allowed to flaunt his musical idiosyncrasies with solo material that was showcased at the concert: The youngest member, Seungri, winkingly seduced the ladies with an energetic pop number, while Daesung unleashed his rock voice with a soaring power ballad. Taeyang’s smooth R&B allowed fans to imagine a world in which Usher also belonged to a boy band, and G-Dragon picked his Brit-rock crowd-pleaser “Crooked” for his solo turn. And then there was his fellow rapper T.O.P, whose innovative personal style can perhaps best be described as art-rap, decked out in a suit inspired by the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian and spitting supersonic rhymes referencing himself as a “rap Basquiat with a mic.”

The band’s American adventures have been documented in BIGBANG: MADE 2015 Concert, which will premiere Nov. 11 on DramaFever. Directed by Mark Haney and recorded during BIGBANG’s two-night engagement at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., the documentary is the first full original production from the streaming video service, which launched in 2009 as a legal destination for licensed international television series and movies, subtitled in English. The company has since co-produced two hit South Korean dramas and was acquired by SoftBanklast year.

“The ability for music to cross barriers and transcend culture is undeniable. It’s clear from our internal metrics that our core audience of multicultural millennials are rabid fans of K-pop,” says Suk Park, president of DramaFever, which has launched a dedicated portal featuring the group’s previous four concert documentaries. “As one of the biggest and most unique acts, BIGBANG has set itself apart as the vanguard of the genre.”

The MADE Tour marks BIGBANG’s first major outing since the release of its last album, 2012’sAlive. The three-year hiatus – especially interminable by the standards of K-pop, where artists come back with new material annually if not sooner – had fans worrying that the group was quitting by attrition, creatively burnt out by the industry’s rigorous demands. But on stage, BIGBANG looked more than ever like they were having the time of their lives. Ironically, it may be impending military enlistment -- thanks to Korea’s mandatory service laws -- that ends the group. But in the meantime, fans can content themselves with the parting scene from the concert’s cinematic video epilogue: The five guys, leaving a house party in the Hollywood Hills to gaze over the vast city below, intact and triumphant.

③ “BIGBANG never wanted to leave YG”

[?????=??? ??] YG Entertainment’s head producer YANG HYUN SUK and BIGBANG have now gone beyond a relationship as the head of a label and its artist. Now, the two will draw a bigger picture for future as partners.

As YG announced the renewal of contract between YG and BIGBANG on November 2, people are paying keen attention to how YG could achieve it without any disagreements. The reason was just simple: the decision was made based on the loyalty and trust between the two. Working with BIGBANG for nine years since the team’s debut, YANG has turned himself from a “strict teacher” into “reliable older brother”.

Such a deep bond between the two was naturally unveiled from BIGBANG’s remarks in KBS 2TV’s “Happy Together Show” aired in May this year.

Regarding YANG’s remark that he “wants to work with BIGBANG for 20 more years”, G-DRAGON answered, “I like to work with YANG HYUN SUK for 20 more years, too. I like it because we’ll have such a big support for a long period of time”. That was an obvious and cool answer which showed BIGBANG’s thought that they do not need to think about any other support than from YG.

BIGBANG members’ bold jokes toward YANG also showed how the relationship between BIGBANG and YG is horizontal, not like that between a boss and his man. G-DRAGON was the one to kick off such bold jokes, saying, “The one who has been changed the most is president YANG”. G-DRAGON made viewers of the show burst into laughter by adding, “You know, in the past, president YANG rarely went out of his office. However, these days, he visits dermatologist so frequently and goes shopping a lot, so he seems to be thinking that he is like a super star”.

SEUNGRI added, “I think YANG cares much about what we think. He rarely stepped in our work on the new album. He just wanted us to do it on our own. We write our songs on our own, and he supports us from behind the scenes.”

Whether BIGBANG will renew their contract with YG or not has been the biggest issue and focus of interest in this year’s music scene. However, as the process of negotiations have been undisclosed, people could not see how it was going on and there have been some rumors that “G-DRAGON wants to leave YG”. However, the bond and trust between YANG and BIGBANG did not shake. Now that BIGBANG responded to YANG’s proposal to “work together for 20 more years” by renewing the contract, the future of YG has been further brightened.

② “YG head YANG HYUN SUK believed BIGBANG to the very last moment”

[?????=??? ??] YG Entertainment’s head producer YANG HYUN SUK has had firm trust in BIGBANG members, to the extent that he said, “I want to work with BIGBANG for the next 20 years, too”.

That shows how BIGBANG is important for YANG. BIGBANG has played the biggest role in YG’s growth into the biggest music label in Korea. It was also BIGBANG who brought the reputation as the best producer in the country to YANG. On the other hand, it was YANG HYUN SUK who made today’s BIGBANG possible. If BIGBANG did not meet YANG and grow with YANG’s support, the current success of BIGBANG would not have been possible.

However, YANG and BIGBANG are not satisfied yet. They still have a lot more to achieve. As there has been such strong trust and confidence between the two, YANG has been positive about the renewal of BIGBANG’s contract with YG.

In an interview with Daily Sports, YANG once expressed his deep affection for BIGBANG. He explained why YG wanted to renew the contract with BIGBANG, saying, “Ji-Young and TAEYANG joined YG at the age of 13, so they have been with YG for almost 15 years now. Since they are now in their mid-twenties, it’s like they have spent more than half of their lives with YG. So, of course, YG and BIGBANG have similar artistic tastes and communication between us is perfect. You know, the biggest strength of YG is that people who like the same thing are gathered together here. Even though I’m 20 years older than BIGBANG members, I really enjoy being with them. Listening to ideas of these young guys, I myself learn more from them, than they learn from me. I believe that YG’s power comes from those people who like to share and communicate about what they like.”

YANG also defined the relationship between BIGBANG and YG as “family”. “BIGBANG is a team who has grown on the ground of YG’s system. You know, I like trees and I have a lot of trees in my house. Some trees get sick of even die when they are transplanted. Even though I’m not the kind of guy who frequently expresses affection for others, since I have been with BIGBANG for more than 10 years and they are like my family now, I believe that we will have no critical disagreements”, said YANG.

There is one more thing worthwhile to mention. YANG said that he will keep helping BIGBANG even if BIGBANG decides not to renew their contract YG. He said, “Even if BIGBANG decides to leave YG and go their own way, I’ll keep helping them. I really mean it. My biggest wish for BIGBANG is to m perform for a long period of time. It’s the 10th anniversary of BIGBANG’s debut next year, and I hope they can perform under the name of BIGBANG even when they grow older, just like Rolling Stones. And I personally wish I could help BIGBANG beside the members for a long time”.

People who like gossips have produced a lot of different speculations about the future of BIGBANG, but there has been an unshakable trust between YANG and BIGBANG. Now that all those speculations have been cleared away with the renewal of contract between the two, the future of YG and BIGBANG look even brighter.

① YG and BIGBANG renewed contract, leaving an exceptional precedent in Korea’s music scene

[OSEN=??? ??] YG Entertainment (“YG”) and group BIGBANG are leaving an “exceptional precedent” in Korea’s music scene.

On November 2 in the morning, YG officially announced that BIGBANG renewed their contract with YG. The announcement cleared many different “speculations and perspectives” about BIGBANG’s position. BIGBANG’s decision to stay with YG bears special meaning in diverse senses.

? Loyalty and partnership above it

Since their debut with single album “Bigbang” released in 2006, BIGBANG renewed their contract with YG in 2011 and has maintained their partnership with YG for nine years. Now that they renewed the contract once again, already-strong bond between YG and BIGBANG has been consolidated once again.

In Korea’s music scene, such a case of all the members of an idol group working with one label for such a long period of time is quite rare. That shows the fact that there is an obvious synergy effect between the two, which goes beyond favorable feelings toward each other, including loyalty and friendship.

YG’s head YANG HYUN SUK has always said, “BIGBANG has built YG. I don’t’ think YG has built BIGBANG. Such remark of YANG shows how much YG recognizes the “present value” of BIGBANG, a K-pop singer who has enormous influence in the world’s music scene. There actually have been a lot of cases where a producer and musician created by him decided to go separate ways eventually, because the producer was not quick to catch up with the new style and mindset of the young artist who grows and changes fast.

BIGBANG themselves are also well aware of the fact that YG is the best foundation on which they can exert their full potential. A music industry insider complimented YG’s efforts not to forcing the company’s style to each artist’s own unique color, by saying, “Among all the major music labels in Korea, YG has the most systematic structure to give support optimized for each artist.” YANG also once mentioned the strength of YG, “YG’s biggest strength is that we support singers who write their own songs very well”.

? BIGBANG & YG, ceaseless change

The biggest force that has driven BIGBANG to the very top of Korea’s music scene was not just “maintenance” of status quo, but the team’s ceaseless change and evolution. The very basis and driver of such change was YG.

When BIGBANG and YG renewed the contract in 2011, there was a mutual agreement between the two that “BIGBANG make a new start as an artist”. At that time, YANG said, “For the next five year of BIGBANG, a new musical style will be created. I made promise to BIGBANG members that I’ll do my best to make them recognized as an artist, rather than just an idol singer”.

Even though BIGBANG was an idol singer at the beginning of their career, BIGBANG now has become a brand, which goes beyond the boundary of an idol group. The strategy for BIGBANG for the five years since 2011 was to “re-launch” BIGBANG as an artist with new style of music, who goes beyond the identity as an idol group. Ultimately, such strategy has been successfully realized.

BIGBANG’s albums released this year proved how big influence BIGBANG has in terms of music, popularity, and culture. As BIGBANG has now successfully evolved into an artists based on YG’s long-term strategy for the team, music fans have high expectations for how BIGBANG will further evolve for the next five years. It is worthwhile paying attention to what YG’s new strategy for BIGBANG will be. As T.O.P once said in a TV show, BIGBANG members are resolved to grow as an artist, to the extent that they are “willing to put an end to BIGBANG if they cannot grow any longer”.

? 9 years+@, a long-term plan to maintain and further grow the brand

Many people see that the biggest challenge for BIGBANG members as of now is the fact that they have to complete their mandatory military service. However, YG has a wider plan for a longer term.

YANG said, “There was a slogan I declared when I first created BIGBANG. You know, Korean idol groups last only four to five years. However, I wanted to create an artist who can perform for a long period of time as in foreign countries.”

YANG also stated that he was planning for long-term career of BIGBANG, saying, “Even though BIGBANG marks the ninth anniversary of their debut this year, they are still growing. Honestly, I want to work with them for the next 20 years, too. I don’t mind their military service. Because each one of BIGBANG is good as a solo artist, too, BIGBANG can still perform even though one or two members are serving in the military.”

Since each one of BIGBANG members has their own competitiveness as a solo artist, there exists a variety of chances and less restrictions for the future career of BIGBANG. Considering BIGBANG’s past achievements gained with YG, fans can look forward to a bigger success that might go beyond their imagination. Plus, now that YG has further strengthened its foundation and root, young YG artists will be able to enjoy bigger benefits.

BIGBANG renews their contract with YG Entertainment

This probably doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone, but good news – BIGBANG has renewed their contract with YG Entertainment!

The label revealed on the 2nd, “We’ve extended our contracts with the five BIGBANG members of G-Dragon, Taeyang, T.O.P, Daesung, and Seungri.” The boys had about two months left on their contract, but they’ve decided to renew their contract early.

This definitely is great news for all V.I.Ps, even if everyone probably knew that the boys would stay loyal to their label.
