[Article] [YG Life] TAEYANG of BIGBANG, “The Members Put in a Lot of Thought on the Offer to Perform at ‘Coachella Festival’”

[마이데일리=김나라 기자] TAEYANG of group BIGBANG shared his thoughts on performing at ‘Coachella Festival’.

On January 17, men’s fashion magazine Esquire revealed the pictorial of TAEYANG, who is the main model for their February edition cover. The pictorial grabbed the people’s attention since it was TAEYANG’s first official act after being discharged from the army.

It is said that TAEYANG displayed a high level of concentration, as if he never had his vacancy due to his military duties.

TAEYANG started the interview by stating, “I’ve been well in the army”. He shared his stories in the meantime by adding, “I’ve looked back into myself through the time I had in the army and earned big energy through that at the same time”.

The public is paying attention to TAEYANG as soon as he was discharged from the army, since BIGBANG was listed on the lineup of ‘2020 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival”.

He revealed, “The members put in a lot of thought after hearing the offer made by Coachella”. He added, “All I want is to present and leave good performances at Coachella”.

In addition to their upcoming performance at Coachella festival on April 10, TAEYANG is also preparing a place of meeting with the fans. It will be through the charity event ‘Hwadap: Donation Flea Market & Auction by TAEYANG and Friends”, organized by himself.

TAEYANG explained, “I thought about how I should first meet my fans after I get discharged”. He continued, “You only wear your daily and combat uniform in the army. That’s enough, so I thought maybe I have too many. I thought about good ways to take care of them and decided to open a flea market in my name to share the good things and donate the earnings to meaningful places”.

On the flea market that will be held in PIER59 Studio, Sungsu-dong on the 18th, TAEYANG will present 1,300 of his personal possessions in addition to 2,200 lifestyle items including fashion items and furniture. All proceeds will be donated for children and teenagers with hearing impairment.

TAEYANG stated, “Listening itself has a lot of meaning to me. Of course, seeing is important, but I think that a single word or beautiful sounds change people the most. That’s why I hope it can be a special gift for the hard of hearing”.

BIGBANG’s Taeyang Shares Thoughts On Performing At Coachella + What Inspired Him To Hold Charity Flea Market

Jan 17, 2020

In a recent interview and pictorial for Esquire magazine, BIGBANG’s Taeyang talked about his upcoming plans for the near future!

The singer, who will be gracing the cover of the magazine’s February issue, is currently gearing up for his return to the industry after his military discharge last November. Earlier this month, BIGBANG made headlines when the famous U.S. music festival Coachella confirmed that the group would be joining this year’s lineup.

Taeyang revealed that the BIGBANG members worried a great deal and debated amongst themselves after receiving the offer to perform at Coachella this spring. “If I had a wish,” he shared, “it would be to leave Coachella with a great performance.”

Long before BIGBANG’s return to the stage in April, Taeyang will be reuniting with his fans in Korea by hosting a special charity flea market and fundraising auction for a meaningful cause.

The singer explained that the inspiration for the event came to him during his time in the military, recalling, “When you’re in the army, you only wear your military uniform and combat uniform. And that’s enough. So it occurred to me that I had too much.

“I was thinking about ways to sort out the things I owned, when I thought that it would be nice if I held a flea market in my name, so I could share good things [with others] and send the proceeds to a good cause.”

All proceeds from the upcoming flea market and auction—which will feature not only items donated by Taeyang but also by CL, Sandara Park, WINNER, iKON, AKMU, and IONE—will go to Snail of Love, a non-profit organization that helps provide cochlear implants and hearing aids to those in need.

When asked about his choice to specifically support Snail of Love, Taeyang explained, “To me, hearing sound in and of itself is extremely meaningful. Of course sight is important too, but I think that one word or one beautiful sound has the ability to transform a person most. That’s why I hope that this can be a special gift to those who are hearing-impaired.”

Taeyang’s “Flower Response” flea market and auction will take place on January 18 at Pier59 Studios in Seoul.

Court Dismisses Second Pretrial Detention Warrant Request For Seungri

Jan 13, 2020

The Seoul Central District Court has released their decision on the prosecution’s pretrial detention warrant request for Seungri.

On January 10, it was revealed that the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office had filed a request for a pretrial detention warrant for Seungri on seven charges.

On January 13, head judge Song Kyung Ho dismissed the second pretrial detention warrant request after questioning the accused. He stated, “Considering the contents of the criminal charges that have been laid, well as the accused’s role, degree of involvement, and room for contention within those charges, the progress of the investigation, collection of evidence, and the accused’s behavior in cooperating with the investigation, it is difficult to recognize the necessity for [pretrial] detention.”

This is the second time that the prosecution has requested a pretrial detention warrant for Seungri. The first request, back in May 2019, was also dismissed by the court.

Kim Min Joon Talks About Meeting Dami Kwon And Brother-In-Law G-Dragon For The 1st Time

Kim Min Joon Talks About Meeting Dami Kwon And Brother-In-Law G-Dragon For The 1st Time

Jan 12, 2020

Actor Kim Min Joon revealed the story of when he met his wife and brother-in-law for the first time!

During the January 12 episode of SBS’s variety program “My Ugly Duckling,” Kim Min Joon appeared as a special guest.

When asked about his recent marriage to Dami Kwon, G-Dragon’s sister, Kim Min Joon replied, “I’m happy, and I’m at peace. I feel like I’ve become healthier.” The actor was also pleasantly surprised after being told that Dami Kwon had previously entered Business of Fashion’s “Top 500 Most Influential People in the World’s Fashion Industry” list.

He later reminisced about how he was introduced to Dami Kwon as he commented, “One of my juniors asked if I wanted to go on a blind date. I did hear that she was G-Dragon’s older sister. [The junior] told me, ‘Just try meeting her without being biased, she’s a good friend of mine,’ so I said, ‘Alright.'”

Kim Min Joon then talked about meeting his in-laws for the first time as well. He said, “I was trying to look confident, but I was honestly really nervous. My in-laws have a cat, but it greeted me while waving its tail. I thought, ‘I’m glad the pet is welcoming,’ but as soon as I touched it, I started bleeding after being scratched. So I think the atmosphere became one where [they thought] ‘We should be good to him.'”

In regard to his first meeting with G-Dragon, Kim Min Joon stated, “We met when he was out on a break [from the military]. It was a little awkward. I did feel a bit nervous. When my older sister brought home the person she wanted to marry, I was really fussy, so I thought, ‘I should’ve been nicer to my brother-in-law.’ But I learned that I had already been approved from the ‘document screening process.’ He had apparently said [to Dami Kwon], ‘I heard you’re dating a celebrity. Who is it?’ Apparently he asked around about me, but he said I was okay, so I felt relieved.”

Seo Jang Hoon then brought up G-Dragon’s recent coffee truck gift for the actor, and Kim Min Joon responded, “Our personalities are actually quite similar. We act indifferent while caring for others. Apparently he tosses two hats at [Dami Kwon] when they meet. When she asks, ‘What’s this?’ he replies, ‘One for you, and one for [Kim Min Joon] hyung.'”

[Article] After terrible year, YG hopes to turn things around in 2020

Industry experts weigh in on fate of label going forward

Less than two weeks into 2020, YG Entertainment has revealed that new boy band Treasure is on the way and BIGBANG will perform at this year’s Coachella music festival in April.

Treasure is set to become the first new all-boy group from YG in over four years, as BIGBANG’s performance will mark the group’s first as a four-piece act.

YG has also been hinting that Blackpink is aiming to release new music sometime early this year, having said the group is recording multiple tracks in a statement.

BIGBANG (YG Entertainment)

As the company, once seen as one of the three major labels in Korea’s music industry, kick-starts the new decade following a terrible year, the sheer volume of releases and announcements is already translating into good news on the stock market.

In a report earlier this week, analyst Park Sung-ho at ‎Yuanta Securities suggested investors buy YG stock, citing a high likelihood of the remaining members of BIGBANG renewing their contracts, the debut of Treasure and that the company is withdrawing itself from loss-making businesses such as its broadcasting production and food business.

But culture critic Jung Duk-hyun is more cautious when it comes to envisioning 2020 as a better year for the label, after it suffered what many see as its worst year in 2019.

“It would be difficult for YG to improve its image quickly. What happened last year was not confined to that particular year but something that had accumulated over a long period of time,” he said.

Jung referred to the Burning Sun scandal that ignited early in 2019. Seungri, who was then a prominent member of BIGBANG, sat on the board of directors of the club Burning Sun, which became engulfed in layers of scandals involving sex, drugs, bribery and other improprieties.

The scandal saw YG’s stocks tumble, Seungri leave BIGBANG and founder Yang Hyun-suk resign as CEO. Yang recently updated his Instagram account with the news of BIGBANG’s Coachella booking.

And according to Jung, many scandal not just a problem involving some artists at YG, but a systemic problem within the label.

“In fact, the public worries for artists at YG and we see fans cheer when they decide to leave the label,” he said, explaining that while there is support for individual artists, whether that could galvanize into support for the label is another matter.

YG could continue to lose artists if that support does not lead to an improvement in its image, he said.

Tamar Herman, K-pop correspondent for Billboard, believes in 2020 it is crucial for YG to turn around its image after a year marked by warning signs.

“YG has always had a ‘cool and bad guy’ image in South Korea, especially because of drug-related incidents, and last year kind of honed in on how prevalent that is at the label,” she said.

Blackpink (YG Entertainment)

Last year, Blackpink had only one release, the debut of Treasure — then named Treasure13 — was delayed and CL and Lee Hi left the label. And it becomes a real problem when business issues end up affecting the content, Herman said.

With BIGBANG’s first announcement as a four-piece act at Coachella, she believes it’s a sign YG is looking to dominate internationally “in the hopes that the ripple effect of last year’s numerous scandals remain localized and don’t follow their artists across oceans.”

“I think that Coachella and K-pop are a good match, as Coachella is increasingly looking for viral moments — think Beyonce’s Homecoming — and K-pop is built for that. BIGBANG’s first stateside performance in years, and first without Seungri, to be there is quite a statement.”

As far as Mimyo, editor at online music magazine Idology, is concerned, YG’s ability to create content remains the same and there is still demand in the industry. To him, the bigger question is how far the company can bounce back.

“I believe there are better chances in terms of business this year (for YG), but being better than last year probably isn’t their objective,” he said.
