With news that BIGBANG will be performing at U.S. music festival Coachella this year, interest is growing on whether the group will be renewing their contracts with YG Entertainment.

On January 3, reports emerged that though the four members had not renewed their contracts yet, they were allegedly in positive discussions with the agency regarding the issue. Speculations were fueled by the fact that T.O.P, G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung have all completed their military service, and they are set to return to the stage at Coachella in April.

When asked for comment on the new reports, a source from YG Entertainment took a cautious approach as they stated, “It is difficult to confirm or deny any details at the current time.”

BIGBANG will be performing at Coachella on April 10 and 17.

G-Dragon, Taeyang, T.O.P and Daesung of Korean band Bigbang receive the Best Worldwide Award during the MTV Europe Music Awards 2011 live show at at the Odyssey Arena on November 6, 2011 in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

It’s been a whirlwind of ups and downs for BIGBANG since the release of their 2016 album MADE, and now the group is back: today (Jan. 3), Coachella revealed that the four-member act would be performing at both weekends of its April event.

The act last released their song “Flower Road” in March 2018. This is the first official news of BIGBANG’s return as an act since the group went on hiatus due to members’ enlisting in South Korea’s military and Seungri’s departure from the act last year amid legal and criminal investigations related to him.

BIGBANG are set to perform during the Friday events, held on April 10 and 17.

South Korean media had recently reported on speculation that BIGBANG would not remain together following a series of high-profile legal investigations surrounding multiple members over the past few years, but Coachella’s announcement seemingly puts that concern to rest and marks the return of BIGBANG.

Billboard has reached out to BIGBANG’s company YG Entertainment regarding the news. The company has since tweeted about the performance.

Korean artists will once again be taking the stage at Coachella!

The popular U.S. music festival, which takes place annually at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, recently confirmed the lineup for this year.

Following the completion of the members’ military service, BIGBANG is set to make their long-awaited return with performances on April 10 and 17.

Epik High, who previously performed at the festival in 2016, will be the first Korean artist to perform twice at Coachella as they take the stage on April 12 and 19.

[동아닷컴=홍세영 기자] BIGBANG was confirmed to perform at ‘Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival’, which is the largest music festival in the United States. It will be the group’s first official performance since the members were discharged from the military, which matches their ‘world class’ level.

On January 3, YG Entertainment revealed, “BIGBANG(G-DRAGON·TAEYANG·T.O.P·DAESUNG) was invited to perform at ‘Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival’, being held in Indio, California from April 10th until the 19th”.

Coachella also announced this year’s lineup through their official social media account on the same day. According to the lineup poster, YG’s representative group BIGBANG will perform on April 10th and on the 17th. BIGBANG will perform on two Friday nights, which are the highlights of the festival, and receive the attention of global music fans.

Global artists have been included in the lineup along with BIGBANG. The group will perform at the festival along artists such as Rage Against The Machine, Travis Scott, Frank Ocean, Calvin Harris, and Lana Del Rey. One can realize BIGBANG’s global popularity and influence despite their recent vacancy.

Coachella began in 1999 and has continued its tradition while remaining prestige. 200~300 thousand audience participate the festival every year. It is known as the ‘dream stage’ for numerous artists, since they invite artists with not only popularity but also musicality. Celebrities and Hollywood stars often visit the event as audience. It is also a festival to interchange the overall cultural trends of not just music but also fashion and lifestyle.

Numerous records set by Coachella proves the festival’s dominant presence. Coachella has won the Top Festival Award 7 times at Billboard’s Touring Awards, currently known as the Billboard Live Awards, since back in 2011.

The police have decided not to lay charges against BIGBANG’s Daesung in their investigation into illegal business operations in his building.

In July 2018, Channel A reported that illegal adult entertainment businesses involving prostitution services were being operated in a building that Daesung owns. Daesung denied knowledge of any illegal activities and announced legal action against the alleged businesses.

The Seoul Gangnam Police Station questioned Daesung last month as a witness and reviewed documents and testimonies obtained through the results of a search and seizure. On January 2, they concluded that Daesung is cleared of suspicion and will not be charged.

During questioning, Daesung testified that he did not know that illegal activities such as prostitution were taking place in the building, and the police were unable to find any evidence for charging him.

The police also questioned people about suspicions of illegal drug use and requested analysis from the National Forensic Service. The results all came back negative.

On January 3, the police will forward 56 people connected with five illegal adult entertainment businesses in the building to the prosecution on charges of violating the Food Sanitation Act and the Anti-Prostitution Act. The police will recommend indictment without detention to the prosecution.

The police will also request administrative action from the Gangnam District Office and the local tax office about the illegal businesses.

BIGBANG’s Taeyang will be starting the year with an amazing event!

On January 2, Taeyang took to his personal Instagram to announce that he will be holding a charity flea market and fundraising auction. He thanked fans for waiting for him throughout his military service, and he planned the new event to do something meaningful together.

Taeyang explained that the funds that are raised will be donated to Snail of Love, an organization dedicated to help provide cochlear implants and hearing aids to those in need. Items will be donated from Taeyang, Sandara Park, AKMU, WINNER, iKON, CL, and IONE.

His agency YG Entertainment stated, “From noon to 7 p.m. KST on January 18, Taeyang will be holding his charity flea market and auction at the PIER59 Studios.” They explained that the name of the event “花答 [Flower Response]” is a continuation of “Flower Road,” the track released by BIGBANG in 2018, and compares the beautiful heart of Taeyang donating prized possessions to a flower.

Taeyang is set to donate 1,300 items to the flea market, and friends of Taeyang such as Sandara Park, AKMU, WINNER, iKON, CL, and IONE will be donating close to 700 items as well.

Taeyang’s “Flower Response” flea market and auction will be held on January 18.

The Korean Business Research Institute has announced this month’s brand reputation rankings for individual members of idol groups.

The rankings were compiled through the analysis of consumer participation, media coverage, interaction, and community awareness indexes of 100 idol groups, using big data collected between November 26 and December 27.

BTS’s Jimin continued to hold his spot at the top of the list for the third month running with a brand reputation score of 13,694,821 for the month of December. This is an increase of over a whopping 3 million for his score last month. Highest-ranking phrases in link searches were “warm,” “donation,” and “cute,” while the most frequently searched related keywords were “ARMY,” “stage performance,” and “good deeds.”

Kang Daniel climbed up to the No. 2 spot with a score of 9,859,013, and MAMAMOO’s Hwasa followed up in the No. 3 spot with a score of 6,645,242.

Rounding out the top five were BTS’s V and AOA’s Seolhyun in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, respectively.

The Korean Business Research Institute has announced this month’s brand reputation rankings for idol groups.

The rankings were compiled through the analysis of consumer participation, media coverage, interaction, and community awareness indexes of 100 idol groups, using big data collected between November 23 and December 24.

BTS continued to hold the top spot in the rankings with a total brand reputation index of 17,969,014 in December. This is a 10.40 percent increase from last month, despite the fact that the overall amount of data for December decreased 6.01 percent compared to November.

EXO rose three places on the list to take the second spot with a total brand reputation index of 6,214,087. This is a 2.14 percent increase from last month.

MAMAMOO rounded out the top three with a total brand reputation index of 5,766,285. In fact, girl groups made up three of the top five, with Red Velvet and BLACKPINK coming in fourth and fifth place on the list.

“Don’t be afraid. There’s no right answer in fashion.” This is what G-Dragon, a.k.a. Kwon Jiyoung, simply said when he was asked about his rebellious trendsetting style. Over the years, he has become a huge figure in K-pop as a composer, leader of BIGBANG, and style icon — and he remains unbeatable. It’s no wonder why in 2017, the Business of Fashion named G-Dragon as one of the “500 People Shaping the Global Fashion Industry.”

G-Dragon’s influence has reached often impenetrable fashion circles around the world, forging friendships with the creative directors of Balmain, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Thom Browne, among many others, and he had a close working relationship with one of the most acclaimed designers of our time – Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel.

With his long-awaited comeback after his discharge from military service, G-Dragon wasted no time in sharing his passion for fashion: he collaborated with Nike to include his personal artwork in Nike Air Force 1 “Para-noise,” which has instantly become yet another hot-selling item in Korea and beyond. He’s had countless unforgettable styles that one post will not be enough, but I tried my best to highlight some of his standout looks as we wait for his return on stage.

Favorite furry hat

One of G-Dragon’s favorite items — and he’s possibly the only one who can pull it off — is the big, fluffy hat that has become the main highlight of his many outfits. He made it look effortlessly cool despite the big size of the hat and regardless of what style he wore it with.

Prince of Darkness

G-Dragon experiments with a lot of styles, but one common theme that he often explores is a dramatic, edgy, and dark look that brings out his moody, mysterious side.

Military man

Military-inspired concepts in clothing is nothing new, as this utilitarian wear can be seen on stage performances or in everyday looks everywhere. But G-Dragon gave it his own flair by mixing it in street wear and his signature unique styling.

Eclectic punk

During his “Crooked” and “Crayon” era, G-Dragon wore a rock punk look that he combined with colorful pop elements. This style is an extension of his music’s themes of going against the grain, finding oneself, being carefree, and not caring about what others think.

Glow up game

As if G-Dragon’s mega presence and charisma aren’t already blinding enough, he shines with sequined suits and metallic outfits that look great on him onstage as well as off.

Color crazed

K-pop style is always defined by how multi-colored it is, but G-Dragon takes this to another level by not only mixing bright hues but also wearing different textures, accessories, and hairstyles that both clash and complement his looks.

Denim Cool

Amplifying his boyish charm is the jean-on-jean style that G-Dragon often wore for a casual cool vibe.

Androgynous gender bender

You won’t find G-Dragon following trends because he is most likely to start them. And one thing he’s good at when it comes to fashion is extending his range of styles while shattering boundaries on gender. He does not subscribe to stereotypes of what a person should wear, whether he’s under public scrutiny or in his personal daily looks. This only shows his true sense of identity and courage in taking risks both in fashion and in music.

Preppy cute

One thing that endears G-Dragon to his fans is that he has the duality of being his sleek, swag self as well as having a playful, cute, and bashful side. This only means that underneath his tough, cool exterior is an unexpectedly sweet, shy guy.

Next-level animal print

G-Dragon always goes big when it comes to interpreting and giving his own fresh take on fashion trends, like the animal print, where he can go either the minimalist or maximalist route.

Perfect suit

When it comes to sophisticated, tailored suits, G-Dragon doesn’t go for typical cuts, standard silhouettes, or tried-and-tested colors. He accessorizes the suit differently, mixing and matching prints, and opting for off-beat styles.

Face of Chanel

Legendary and luxurious — these words are perhaps what best describe the renowned designer brand Chanel. The same can be said about G-Dragon, which is why he’s the perfect ambassador to carry the name of the brand.

The Korean Business Research Institute has released brand reputation rankings for individual boy group members for the month of December!

The rankings were determined through an analysis of the consumer participation, media coverage, communication, and community awareness indexes of 598 boy group members, using big data collected from November 19 to December 20.

BTS’s Jimin ranked first place for the 12th consecutive month with a brand reputation index of 10,644,059, which was a 7.94 percent increase from the previous month. High-ranking phrases in his keyword analysis included “fan meeting,” “Twitter,” and “ARMY,” while his highest-ranking related terms included “sweet,” “happy,” and “like.” Jimin’s positivity-negativity analysis also revealed a score of 83.50 percent positive reactions.

Maintaining his position in second place was BIGBANG’s G-Dragon, with a brand reputation index of 7,455,665 for December.

In third place was BTS’s V, who came in with an index of 7,298,281 for this month.
