12 K-Pop Bops We Can’t Believe Are Turning 10 Years Old

Jan 22, 2019

Looking back on the past decade, we have been blessed with a handful of great music by our favorite idols. Back when the genre was still fresh in the international scene, many hits that were released at the time helped K-pop to become one of the most listened-to musical styles.

None of this would’ve happened if it weren’t for the amazing lineup of K-pop’s second generation, which not only gave new exposure to K-pop but also introduced new concepts and rules of their own to the batch.

Old but gold, here are 12 songs that are turning 10 years old this 2019!

1. Girls’ Generation – “Gee”

10 years ago, “Gee” was crowned “Song of the Decade” by Melon, and this song lived to tell the tale! This chart-topping and award-winning hit really kickstarted Girls’ Generation’s career, as they remain one of the most popular girl groups to this day.

2. Super Junior – “Sorry, Sorry”

Super Junior has unapologetically lured a lot of fans into the K-pop world, and seeing this breathtaking lineup of members, we perfectly understand why! We’re simply grateful for being rewarded with one of the group’s most legendary releases.

3. 2PM – “Again & Again”

Here is yet again another major hit from 2009! With “Again & Again,” the 2PM members, who were just rookies back then, rose to stardom! Thanks to this song, the group grabbed their very first win on a music show and won Song of the Year at the 2009 KBS Song Festival.

4. Wonder Girls – “Nobody” (English version)

Nobody thought this song could get any more amazing, but these wonderful ladies proved us wrong! After its previous release back in 2008, the song came back to life a year later and served as the group’s U.S. debut song, being entirely in English.

5. 2NE1 – “I Don’t Care”

The way 2NE1 took the K-pop world by storm is unprecedented. Within the same year of their debut, the song dominated online and offline charts, making the girls’ name stand steadily in the music industry. Due to its commercial success, several versions and remixes of “I Don’t Care” were eventually released.

6. FTISLAND – “I Hope”

On top of being an instant first-place win after only 13 days of its release, “I Hope” is a beautiful masterpiece and simply one of FTISLAND’s best tracks to date.

7. Brown Eyed Girls – “Abracadabra”

Fierce and fiery, the scenery behind “Abracadabra” marked a notable switch of this group’s concept. Granted, the new style received generously positive feedback. Their key point choreography, the “Arrogant dance,” was so famous that PSY paid copyright fees to include it in his “Gentleman” music video.

8. KARA – “Mister”

Another catchy song and choreography that will stay stuck in your head against your will is KARA’s “Mister.” Not only was it well received in Korea, but it literally invaded Japan’s Karaoke rooms as the most popular tune to be sung. It also originally served as their Japanese debut song.

9. G-Dragon – “Heartbreaker”

G-Dragon made more hearts than break them as he launched his solo career, much to his fans’ delight. Serving as the lead single of his first album, “Heartbreaker” made a significant impact as it sold over 3 million digital downloads in just 2009.

10. 4Minute – “Hot Issue”

Girl groups were a hot issue back in 2009, and 4Minute was no exception. Serving as their debut single, “Hot Issue” was a huge success, which allowed the rising ladies to show the K-pop scene what they’re truly made of.

11. SHINee – “Ring Ding Dong”

This song needs absolutely no introduction since every K-pop fan, both old and new, know it by heart. “Ring Ding Dong” is but one of many hits that were brought to us by SHINee throughout the years. Funnily so, its compelling chorus is so addictive that the song was the most banned before college entrance exams in South Korea.

12. T-ara – “Bo Peep Bo Peep”

Judged by critics as the group’s potential first hit, T-ara promoted “Bo Peep Bo Peep” during their comeback. Just as predicted, the title track led them to fame and helped the girls secure their spot in the market both in Korea and in Japan.

BIGBANG’s Seungri came up with a creative way to promote his dad’s hometown.

On the January 17 broadcast of SBS’s “We Will Channel You,” Seungri spent the day at his father’s hometown of Yeonggwang in South Jeolla Province.

Seungri expressed joy when he ran into some adults who recognized him at a dried yellow corvina processing center. In order to promote this regional delicacy, he then personally rearranged the song and lyrics to BIGBANG’s “FXXX IT” and filmed a promotional MV.

The BIGBANG member revealed, “To be honest, the schedule for the YG recording studio was packed, so I recorded after waiting for the junior singers to finish.”

He continued, “But they said that rearranging and recording are only possible with permission from the original songwriter. The copyright owner of the original song is GD. They said I could also get the permission of the song owner or the song owner’s parents in order to use the song, so I called GD’s mom.”

“I told her, ‘When GD comes out on vacation, please tell him that Seungri used it as a yellow corvina song.'”

Yang Se Hyung then made everyone laugh by commenting, “If GD comes out on vacation, then he might say, ‘Seungri I’m going to despise you,'” while impersonating GD’s voice.

“We Will Channel You” airs on Thursdays at 11:10 p.m. KST on SBS. Check out Seungri’s MV below!

Yang Hyun Suk Shares Apology Message From BIGBANG’s Seungri + Responds To Claims

Jan 17, 2019

On January 17, Yang Hyun Suk shared a message he received from BIGBANG’s Seungri and responded to a recent article.

The YG Entertainment founder posted a screenshot on Instagram of a text message conversation with Seungri. Seungri’s message begins with two characters that are used to symbolize tears. Seungri wrote, “I will put an end to the controversy. I’m sorry for everything. I wanted to be funny while talking and I think I went a bit overboard.”

Yang Hyun Suk also shared a screenshot of a news article that reports that fans had begun a project on Twitter and Instagram to trend the phrase “YG Treat Seungri Right.” It reported that fans had stated that Yang Hyun Suk was deleting comments of complaint on his Instagram about a lack of support for Seungri at his recent Hong Kong concert, and quoted fans as saying they would continue the hashtag project until YG’s treatment of Seungri changed.

Yang Hyun Suk responded in the caption to his Instagram post. He first wrote the words “YG,” “Seungri,” and “VIP” with hearts in between, and went on to say, “I have never deleted comments in my life time. I wish everyone a happy new year.”

Seungri replied to his post with the same phrase of “YG Seungri VIP” with hearts, and said, “Sir, I’ll go to the 7th floor any time. I love you. Forever.” The seventh floor of YG Entertainment is where Yang Hyun Suk’s office is located.

At his recent solo concert in Hong Kong, Seungri reportedly stated that Yang Hyun Suk had belatedly found out that he was holding the concert and said that he had thought Seungri didn’t need backup dancers. According to fans, Seungri performed at the show with two backup dancers and no band. In response to this situation, fans began a protest on social media.

Seungri will be wrapping up his “The Great Seungri Tour 2019 Live” concert tour with final concerts in Seoul on February 16 and 17.

BIGBANG’s Seungri Makes The Trip To Father’s Hometown And Visits Grandfather’s Grave

BIGBANG’s Seungri Makes The Trip To Father’s Hometown And Visits Grandfather’s Grave

BIGBANG’s Seungri Makes The Trip To Father’s Hometown And Visits Grandfather’s Grave

Jan 10, 2019

On the latest episode of SBS’s “We Will Channel You,” BIGBANG’s Seungri went to his father’s hometown to visit his grandfather’s grave.

During the January 10 broadcast, Seungri revealed, “My father used to do judo but learned golf and became a professional golfer. He practiced indoors where he met my mother who worked there and got married at the age of 29. Then I was born.”

Then he shared, “I grew up to be in a great group called BIGBANG and I was able to work globally. I’m receiving an overwhelming amount of love. So I’m going to visit my father’s hometown with the concept of a ‘glorious return.'”

Therefore, Seungri headed down to Yeonggwang County and started to search for his grandfather’s grave. However, due to the sudden fall of heavy snow, he got lost and eventually called his father. Seungri asked, “Where are you?,” and his father replied, “I went to the gym, and now I’m heading home.” Surprised, Seungri questioned, “You go to the gym?,” and his father answered, “Yes, I go to the gym every morning.”

When Seungri revealed he was at his father’s hometown, his father asked in a humorous tone, “What are you going there for?” Seungri explained to him about the opening of his personal channel, and his father started giving him vague directions. His father stated, “Go to the town’s main road and head up there in a car.” Flabbergasted, Seungri commented, “Anyone can say that easily.”

His father attempted to give directions once more. He asked, “Do you village hall on your left?” Seungri turned the camera to his left, which showed nothing but an empty field blanketed with snow. In surrender, Seungri fibbed, “I do.” His father asked, “There’s a house to your right, isn’t there?” Seungri turned the camera to his right to show there was no house, and yet he replied “Yes.” Then his father said, “All you have to do is go that way. Just go straight with your instincts.”

After they finished their call, Seungri commented on how cold it was and said, “Is this what it’s like when you go to the army?” He added, “Wow, my hyungs must be so cold,” appearing to be referring to his fellow BIGBANG members in the army.

Seungri looked hopeless at his father’s unhelpful directions, but eventually, he managed to find his grandfather’s grave. He made a video call with his parents who pointed out his name engraved in Chinese characters. Then he paid his respects to his late grandfather by bowing in front of his grave.

Seungri said, “Actually, I don’t know what my grandfather looks like since he passed away before I was born, but I always think he’s protecting me from somewhere.”

Watch: NCT And Oh My Girl Train New “Weekly Idol” MCs To Be Idols

Jan 9, 2019

NCT and Oh My Girl helped welcome the new MCs of MBC every1’s “Weekly Idol”!

On January 9, “Weekly Idol” aired its first episode featuring its new MCs Jo Se Ho, ZE:A’s Kwanghee, and Nam Chang Hee. Jo Se Ho said to viewers, “I’m a bit worried, but I’ll work hard if you cheer us on.” Nam Chang Hee said, “I know about your worries and concerns, but I’ll show you a good appearance.”

NCT’s Doyoung, Taeyong, and Jungwoo and Oh My Girl’s Seunghee, Hyojung, and Arin took turns appearing as guests on the variety show.

Combining their names together, the three MCs formed a unit literally translated as “handsome men,” and the NCT members gave them tips on a good greeting to use.

NCT showed them how it’s done by performing “Regular” at double speed, and also taught the three MCs about the importance of the idol ending pose.

The hosts then gave the double speed dance game a chance themselves as they took on ZE:A’s “Maseltov.”

When Jo Se Ho revealed, “To be honest, many people were worried,” NCT reassured them by saying, “I don’t think you need to be worried.”

The three new MCs then continued to experience the day in the life of an idol. They learned about cuteness and concepts from Oh My Girl. Hyojung’s song “Be Mine” (literal title) had become the trademark cuteness song on “Weekly Idol.” During this episode, she revealed the second cuteness song that she composed called the “Yum Yum Song” (literal title).

Oh My Girl then shared tips on how to pull off any concept using different facial expressions and showed examples for dreamlike, cute, and sexy concepts.

“Weekly Idol” airs on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. KST.
