In Defense Of The Mullet: 11 Idols Who Prove That This Hairstyle Is A Blessing To K-Pop

Jan 9, 2019

Ahh, the mullet: everyone’s favorite hairstyle to love to hate. This short-to-long haircut is known popularly as “business in the front, party in the back” — but fans are rarely in the mood to party when they spot a mullet on their favorite K-pop idol. This hairdo gets a bad rap, and not without reason: an ill-conceived mullet can make even the handsomest of idols look hazardously unkempt (sorry, Park Kyung) or oddly prissy (we still love you, Minho):

But the mullet has made a comeback in recent years, and there are several reasons for its revival: the resurgence of retro fashion, the trend towards increasingly outlandish styles… and, shockingly, the newly-discovered fact that mullets can actually look good. Yes, my friends, we have now entered a new era of mullets: one in which they are more subtle and less scruffy; chic rather than cringey; and honestly, downright attractive.

When done right, the mullet is a framer of faces, a shaper of jawlines, and a champion of chillness. Certain mullets deserve our respect and adoration, and I am going to provide cold, hard evidence — in the form of beautiful pictures of our favorite K-pop idols — to prove it. Let’s begin.

1. The versatile mullet: BIGBANG’s G-Dragon

There’s no better place to start than with K-pop’s fashion king himself. G-Dragon is known for his ability to rock any look, so it’s no surprise that he is a prime example of the mullet’s versatility. GD’s mullet has gone through many iterations over the years, from soft and angelic to edgy and bold. Here are a few of our faves:

And one of our least faves, because I’m sorry GD but there’s not a lot of party and a whole lot of WTF in the back of this stringy mullet:

2. The sizzling summer mullet: EXO’s Baekhyun

When EXO began teasing for “THE WAR,” fans were taken aback when they first saw Baekhyun sporting a mullet. But let’s be honest, there’s a lot to love about this ‘do: the sweeping bangs are gorgeously flirty, and the long red streaks give a sexy, untamed vibe to the vocalist’s look. Baekhyun’s mullet ko-ko-killed it, and was undeniably one of the most iconic K-pop looks of Summer 2017.

3. The majestic mullet: B.A.P’s Jongup

A bold hairstyle or a bright color alone would be enough for most idols, but Jongup dared to go where few have ventured with this two-toned, turquoise-tipped mullet. The result is a stunning mane of silvery locks that makes the singer look utterly godlike. Habaek, is that you?

4. The edgy mullet: B.A.P’s Himchan

Twice the mullets, twice the fun, right? Jongup was not the only B.A.P member to sport this hairstyle for the group’s “Honeymoon” comeback, as Himchan followed suit with a more subtle take on the look. Himchan’s mullet truly offers the best of both worlds: short, textured bangs accentuate his brow line, while the back of his hair gives him that old-school rugged sexiness that we can’t help but love.

5. The sophisticated mullet: SEVENTEEN’s The8

If you still think that mullets are better suited for washed up rockstars from the ’80s, then think again, because The8 has revolutionized the hairstyle with his use of different of colors, textures, and accessories. The SEVENTEEN member’s cut is so sleek that we can’t tell where the business stops and the party starts, allowing him to transition easily from nerd-chic to subtle bad boy to boyfriend look. Who knew the mullet could have so many different nuances?

6. The boho mullet: EXO’s Chen

Chen gave the mullet a unique makeover for “Tempo,” braiding the back portion of his locks to add a boho flair to the look. The braids hint at a free-spirited, wild streak, while Chen’s blunt bangs are no-nonsense: we definitely don’t want to mess with his tempo.

7. The subtle mullet: BTS’s V

V has kept his mullet on the soft and subtle side, for a boy next door look with a flirtatious edge. His long bangs add a mysterious aura to the style; a perfect complement to the alluring “Singularity” music video in which he originally sported this haircut. We’re also deeply impressed with the amount of volume on this one — that ruffled look gives off an undeniable boyish charm.

8. The too-cool-for-school mullet: GOT7’s JB

Subtle, sleek, and a little disheveled, JB’s mullet exudes a laissez faire vibe that offers maximum chillness. Did he cut those choppy bangs himself? Did he even brush his hair this morning? It doesn’t matter; JB is cooler than us all without even having to try, and he has the mullet to prove it.

9. The angelic mullet: NCT’s Taeyong

Is that a halo, or a hairstyle? Taeyong’s mullet is the perfect complement to his legendary visuals, caressing his neck with its wispy texture and framing his face with ethereal hues.

We also didn’t fully appreciate the “business” aspect of the mullet until we saw Taeyong in NCT 127’s “Irregular Office” teaser, because nothing says “boss” like this mullet:

10. The fluorescent mullet: WINNER’s Song Mino

From its outrageous color to its unkempt cut, Mino’s mullet should, by all accounts, be a fashion faux pas. Yet somehow, the WINNER rapper manages to pull this one off. This glowing ball of emerald fluff straddles the boundary between heinous and cool, but when it’s paired with Mino’s stage presence, we’re strangely crazy about it.

11. The sleek mullet: Kwon Hyunbin

A cousin of V’s subtle mullet, the hairstyle on former JBJ member Kwon Hyunbin exudes a natural, soft feeling that we absolutely adore, especially with his bangs swept aside. Hyunbin is proof that the mullet’s business/party duality can be tamed into a more all-around casual look. What’s not to love?

Honorable Mentions

The mullet remains a controversial style for a reason, and not every idol has pulled it off as magnificently as the above 11. We would be remiss in not mentioning the idols that have taken noteworthy steps on their mullet journeys, but have yet to completely cultivate their mullets into the shining manes of glory that they have the potential to become. But with a little change of color or slightly different styling, we have faith that these idols, too, will become pioneers of this distinguished ‘do:

Top left to right: SEVENTEEN’s Woozi, NCT’s Taeil, SF9’s Youngbin; Bottom left and right: VIXX’s N, and Zico.

Hey Soompiers, do you now believe in the power of the mullet? Or are you still unconvinced? Which K-pop idol pulls one off the best? Share your opinions in the comments!

hgordon stays up way too late on weeknights marathoning K-dramas and trying to keep up with the latest K-pop releases.

No Promotions While Serving The Military Yet Still Winning Awards, The Power Of BIGBANG

The prestigious award show the 33rd Golden Disc Awards was held on January 5 and 6 to celebrate the best of 2018 music.

On January 5, the 33rd Golden Disc Awards celebrated the digital releases of 2018. BIGBANG took home an award that night; they won a Bongsang in Digital Song Division alongside other nine artists and groups.

They received the award for their 2018 hit track “Flower Road.” They had released the track to say goodbye to their fans while they serve the military.

The song was an immense success; it achieved a perfect-all-kill on all major Korean charts shortly after its release. It was praised by the public and listened to by fans who vowed to wait for the boys as they served their country.

BIGBANG was talked about again after winning a Bongsang with zero promotions, which isn’t easy to get. BIGBANG won the award without even trying to promote it on music shows or through appearances on TV shows.

The other winners of Bongsang in Digital Song Division were BLACKPINK, Bolbbalgan4, BTS, Chungha, iKON, MAMAMOO, MOMOLAND, Roy Kim, and TWICE.

BIGBANG proves once again their power in the Kpop industry dominating the charts and winning awards even when they’re on hiatus.

Congrats to BIGBANG!

BIGBANG’s Seungri And iKON Prepare A Touching Surprise Event For Yang Hyun Suk’s Birthday

Jan 7, 2019

YG Entertainment artists have demonstrated their YG family love once again!

On January 6, YG Entertainment CEO Yang Hyun Suk uploaded a video onto his personal Instagram showing the iKON members and BIGBANG’s Seungri surprising him with a cake and flowers for his birthday.

The iKON members were captured going up to Yang Hyun Suk holding a cake lit with candles and a bouquet of flowers while singing “Happy Birthday.” The members said, “Please blow the candles out!” “We respect you,” “We prepared this for you,” as well as a number of other statements of support. Yang Hyun Suk repeatedly thanked the iKON members for this sweet surprise.

The video then cut to a clip of BIGBANG’s Seungri cutting the birthday cake while energetically shouting, “Congratulations on your birthday. Happy birthday YG! I love this cake! YG republic!” Many people can be heard in the background laughing at Seungri’s enthusiasm.

The video was uploaded with the caption, “TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY !!
THANKS EVERYONE !! iKON’S CONCERT IN SEOUL WAS VERY GOOD !! I FEEL SO GOOD AS WELL” The caption led fans to believe that this celebration took place after iKON’s solo concert in Seoul, South Korea.

EXO Starts Off Strong With “Love Shot”; Soompi’s K-Pop Music Chart 2019, January Week 1

Jan 7, 2019

Happy New Year to all our readers!

EXO scores the first No. 1 song on our chart in 2019 with “Love Shot.” This song moves up 11 spots to take over as our new No. 1 song. “Love Shot” is the title track from EXO’s repackaged fifth album, and is a dance song with an addictive chorus. The lyrics encourage listeners to take a shot to find the meaning of their true love despite life being difficult. “Love Shot” previously won on “Music Bank” twice and “Music Core” once for the last two weeks. Congratulations to EXO!

Our highest debut this week is WINNER’s “MILLIONS,” entering the chart at No. 2. “MILLIONS” is a refreshing tropical pop dance track. Starting with an exciting guitar sound, the emotional melody and the warm sound leads the first part of the song. The rhythmic whistling and bouncing kick of the chorus lead to another exciting atmosphere. Even in a simple rhythm, it is fun to listen to. The lyrics state that everyone who listens to this song will find millions of love. “MILLIONS” won on “Inkigayo” and “M Countdown” last week.

Rounding out the top three is TWICE’s “YES or YES,” holding steady at No. 3.

The last of our three new songs in the top 10 is Ben’s “180 degrees,” which moves up seven spots this week to No. 4. This is Ben’s first top five song, and is the title track from her mini-album of the same name. It is an emotional ballad about a relationship that takes a 180 degree turn towards saying farewell. The lyrics are expressed from a woman’s viewpoint, giving the song a dramatic vibe. “180 degrees” won on “Inkigayo” two weeks ago, which was Ben’s first music show win.

TOP 10 SONGS OF 2018:

Here are the 10 songs that had the highest accumulated scores on our chart in 2018:

1. MOMOLAND – “Bboom Bboom” (13230)

2. BLACKPINK – “DDU-DU DDU-DU” (13212)

3. BTS – “IDOL” (12925)

4. TWICE – “Dance The Night Away” (11679)

5. Red Velvet – “Power Up” (10333)

8. BIGBANG – “Flower Road” (9522)

9. MAMAMOO – “Egotistic” (9124)

10. Jang Deok Cheol – “Good Old Days” (8567)

After winning during the first half, MOMOLAND’s “Bboom Bboom” managed to hold on to the top spot on a close call against BLACKPINK’s “DDU-DU DDU-DU” and BTS’s six-week champion “IDOL” for the overall No. 1 K-pop song of 2018. Congratulations to MOMOLAND!

8 Popular K-Pop Concepts From 2018 That Are Unforgettable

8 Popular K-Pop Concepts From 2018 That Are Unforgettable

8 Popular K-Pop Concepts From 2018 That Are Unforgettable

Jan 4, 2019

One cannot simply mention K-pop without addressing its magnificent concepts. Aside from veteran themes that have been in the spotlight since the very first generation, more authentic ideas are added to the list year after year as they beautifully encapsulate the core of our favorite MVs. What makes these concepts even more popular is the fact that many K-pop idols adopt them when crafting their musicality.

With creativity being K-pop’s ultimate weapon, this past year was no different. Here are eight popular K-pop concepts that we were graced with in 2018!

1. Culture-based inspiration

Culture has been vastly appreciated this year both musically and visually through K-pop.

Not only did (G)I-DLE introduce an Arabian touch in both their MVs this year, but they also set the 2018 Melon Music Awards on fire with a hypnotizing Egyptian-inspired royal stage.

It is no news that Super Junior took Billboard’s Latin chart by storm with their hit “Lo Siento,” and knowing just how much we liked it, they granted us a second collaboration titled “One More Time (Otra Vez).”

MAMAMOO is another artist who had a Latin-infused comeback via their title track “Egotistic.” A dreamy guitar sound, a fiery choreography, and compelling aesthetics: these fine ladies definitely had us swooning!

While they also incorporated Latin vibes in “Airplane Pt. 2,” we are featuring BTS to acknowledge their record-breaking hit to date, “Idol,” where they paid homage to Korean culture by showcasing it through the song’s instrumental and lyrics as well as their modern hanbok look, which left us in complete awe.

Another idol who paid tribute to Korean culture is WINNER’s Song Mino with his song “Fiancé,” where he takes us back in time to a very traditional setting as he is seen chasing after the woman he once lost.

2. Rebellion

Since K-pop is often linked to cute themes, it always feels nice to see some groups come out of their shells with a badass image that has us gladly asking for more.

Throughout their MVs, EXO has always had a nudge for raw and resilient visuals, and “Tempo” fits in undoubtedly!

As for MONSTA X, their bad boy persona is simply untouchable as “Shoot Out” sends shivers down our spines with every beat.

Speaking of which, no one can handle bad boys like the Red Velvet members, who flawlessly show a flamboyant and hardcore side of themselves in their MV below.

Lastly, as they gracefully keep seesawing within their dual concept, BLACKPINK hit us with that “DDU-DU DDU-DU” and charmingly knocked us out in the process.

3. Movie adaptations

We all have a soft spot for the classics, and when a blockbuster resurfaces via a remake, the experience is doubly enjoyable. Albeit very concise, MVs sometimes deliver that exact feeling.

All while keeping their cheerful aura, TWICE amazed us by reproducing epic scenes from some of the best movies of all time. “La La Land” and “The Princess Diaries” are a couple of examples featured in this nostalgic MV!

Another idol who sought inspiration in an old classic is BIGBANG’s Seungri, who entertained us with a suave one-shot MV of “1, 2, 3!” which was heavily inspired by the legendary musical “Grease.”

Following in their labelmates’ footsteps, GOT7 takes us in a fantasy-fueled journey via “Lullaby” with a nod to some memorable film releases, such as “Harry Potter” and “Interstellar” to name a few.

4. Femme fatale

If we learned anything from the following messages, it’s that women are not to be messed with.

Sunmi, who never shies away from portraying her mystical spirit through her music, unveils yet another one of her mighty manifestations via “Siren.”

Another woman who knows her worth is BoA, and she shows us exactly what she’s made of in her MV for “Woman.”

Both delicate and fierce, Jennie elegantly proves to us through her recently launched solo that she can perfectly stand alone.

5. Retro

The retro pattern has been spotted quite significantly this year with a set of striking MVs that complement the groovy style.

Triple H’s “Retro Future” needs no introduction, as it literally embodies the design inside and out.

“Countless” is one of many MVs that is shelved on SHINee’s tremendously retro-flavored videography.

“I Love You” is indisputably the ideal retro feature as it marks EXID’s first five-member comeback in a while, just like the good old times.

6. Suits

Away from K-pop’s usual flashy wardrobe, this outfit gives the genre a whole new definition, and a fine one at that.

CLC looks more than dazzling in the “Black Dress” MV, paradoxically nailing their dance moves in black suits.

On their side, BTOB cleans up nicely as they rock monotone suits in a rather colorful set for their “Only One For Me” MV.

7. Cosmos

The universe is full of wonders, and the following acts ethereally trace back to its phenomenal beauty.

Oh My Girl took us on a fictional stroll in “Secret Garden,” where a captivating panorama can be spotted in the MV.

Triple Threat Idols Who Are Excellent Singers, Rappers, And Songwriters

Triple Threat Idols Who Are Excellent Singers, Rappers, And Songwriters

Dec 30, 2018

Some people can just sing, others can only rap, and a few have the ability to produce music.

However, these idols have been blessed with all three gifts.

Here are some of the talented idols who can rap, sing, AND write great music:

1. BIGBANG’s G-Dragon

G-Dragon is the primary example of an idol that can rap, sing, and produce. Although he is currently serving in the military, he completed two successful world tours on his own, proving he is definitely “one of a kind.”

2. BTS’s RM

RM is not only the leader of BTS but a producer and rapper as well. On top of that, he has a great singing voice, and his English speaking skills are just a bonus!

3. Zico

Zico is known to be the icon of hip hop due to his glamorous style, swag-filled expressions, and creative music. He started producing since Block B’s debut and showcased his talent by collaborating with various artists from different genres. Zico recently parted ways with Seven Seasons.

4. WINNER’s Song Mino

Song Mino is also famous for his singing, rapping, and producing skills. He produces songs for his group WINNER as well as himself, and recently produced all the songs on his first solo album “XX.”

5. (G)I-DLE’s Jeon Soyeon

After appearing on “Produce 101,” people were amazed how the “Unpretty Rapstar” could also sing so well. Not only does she know how to rap and sing, but Jeon Soyeon produced (G)I-DLE’s tracks “LATATA” and “HANN.”

6. DAY6’s Young K

Not only is Young K an excellent bassist, but he has many skills including singing, rapping, and songwriting. He participated in writing the majority of DAY6’s songs and even featured as a rapper for fellow JYP labelmates Baek A Yeon and Park Jimin.

7. iKON’s B.I

The leader and rapper of iKON can also sing and produce. He showed powerful rapping skills on “Show Me The Money” and is responsible for producing many of iKON’s hit songs, including the popular “Love Scenario.”

8. Highlight’s Yong Junhyung

Highlight’s Yong Junhyung is one of the idols with the most songs under his name and once revealed that he earns enough royalties to purchase a second-hand German car. He featured in many songs as a rapper, but his singing voice is just as heavenly. Currently, he is also showcasing his acting chops in the drama “Coffee, Do Me a Favor.”

9. CL

CL previously produced many songs as the leader of 2NE1 while also showing off her rapping skills and vocals. The fierce female rapper is currently a successful solo artist.

10. VICTON’s Seungwoo

VICTON’s leader Seungwoo is both a lead vocalist and lead rapper for the group. Seungwoo co-composed VICTON’s songs including their title track “Unbelievable.”

11. Stray Kids’ Bang Chan

Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han make up Stray Kids’ producing team 3RACHA, who are all multi-talented triple threats. Of these, leader Bang Chan has participated in producing almost every single Stray Kids track. Having trained for seven years, he possesses excellent singing, rapping, and dancing skills.

12. EXO’s Chanyeol

When you mention idols who can sing, rap, and write music, you can’t forget Chanyeol. The rapper has a velvety deep singing voice that is perfect for rainy days. Chanyeol has collaborated with artists like Heize in “Unpretty Rapstar” and Punch for the “Goblin” OST. He has participated in the composition or lyrics for songs including “With You,” “Gravity,” Ko Ko Bop,” and many more.

13. MONSTA X’s Jooheon

Last but not least is Jooheon, the fierce, charismatic rapper of MONSTA X. He previously appeared on “Show Me The Money” and released powerful mixtapes. Jooheon also co-composed many MONSTA X songs such as “Deja Vu,” “Perfect Girl,” and “Blue Moon,” as well as with other artists like Mad Clown and Hyolyn. The rapper has an incredible singing voice, as well.

Which other idols who can rap, sing, and produce come to your mind?
