Seungri And His Sister Hang Out On “I Live Alone,” Talk About Her Friendship With BTS’s J-Hope And EXID’s Hyerin

Dec 28, 2018

On the December 28 broadcast of MBC’s “I Live Alone,” BIGBANG’s Seungri met with his younger sister, Lee Han Na.

The two met at a store so Seungri could pick out a birthday gift for his sister. He said during his interview, “Until now, I’ve always given my sister gifts like shoes, clothes, or handbags, but I’ve never seen her use them. She doesn’t even take photos. Because my sister DJs, I wanted to gift her with a high-tech piece of equipment or instrument.”

He said he’s not that close with his sister because they were apart a lot when they were young as he was preparing to join BIGBANG. “We didn’t see each other a lot. I stopped by occasionally when our mom would cook, and other than saying hi to each other in passing when my sister was DJing, this is the first time I’ve met with her in a long time. It’s a little awkward, and I don’t really know what to say.”

At the store, Lee Han Na found a piece of equipment that she liked, and when Seungri asked about the price, the store employee said it was 980,000 won (approximately $878). After struggling with the high price point and attempting — and failing — to haggle, Seungri handed his card over for 980,000 won.

Seungri then took his sister to a cafe, where he asked her if any of her friends like him. She said, “Not you, but BIGBANG.” Seungri asked again if her friends ask if they can meet him, and she said, “There’s no one. They do ask this: ‘Have you seen G-Dragon?’ ‘What’s Taeyang like?’ They don’t ask about you.”

She said the celeb that’s popular among her friends is Park Bo Gum. Seungri, desperately, said he hears from people that he looks a little like Park Bo Gum, but was shot down by his sister once again.

Seungri then asked how she close to BTS. She said, “There’s a member named Hoseok, and we used to go to the music academy in Gwangju together.” Seungri asked if it was the academy he had run, and she said yes. Seungri, hearing this news for the first time, said again, surprised, “BTS is from my music academy?” and Lee Han Na showed him a picture of J-Hope.

Lee Han Na said, “[BTS] is insane. I was invited to their concert, so I went, and they’re just on another level. Their dressing room was on the second floor, and they were gracefully coming down the stairs. They’re on another level.”

Seeing how his sister’s expression brightened while talking about BTS, Seungri said, “BIGBANG did all of that, too.” Lee Han Na laughed, saying, “What did you do? I was there, too, and I saw it all.” Seungri quickly recovered and said he would take her on a helicopter when BIGBANG makes a comeback.

He also asked his sister about being close to EXID, and how she’s so close to celebrities. She said, “They’re all from the same music academy.” When Seungri seemed surprised again to hear about who was from his own academy, Lee Han Na said, “Hyerin! I introduced you guys the other day. She used to come over to our house, and you’ve run into her before.”

On the pros and cons of having a celebrity brother, Lee Han Na said a pro is that he makes a lot of money, and a con is that when people find out she’s Seungri’s little sister, she has to be careful about how she acts because of how people will talk about her.

Seungri, in his interview, said, “People would whisper about her being my sister. She was so stressed for a long time, and she developed skin trouble and also experienced some health issues, so I’m sorry about that.”

After tea, the siblings closed out their night with some fun taking goofy photos in a photo booth:

An Idol Easter Egg Hunt: 12 Times We Encountered K-Pop In Unexpected Places

An Idol Easter Egg Hunt: 12 Times We Encountered K-Pop In Unexpected Places

An Idol Easter Egg Hunt: 12 Times We Encountered K-Pop In Unexpected Places

Dec 28, 2018

We’ve all been through something like this: You hear or see something K-pop related when you don’t expect to, and the overwhelming urge to fangirl (or fanboy) comes rushing through your body. The thrill of this surprise K-pop reference is so great that you may or may not spontaneously combust. Well, maybe the experience isn’t *that* dramatic, but it really is exciting to find these little Easter eggs!

For the sake of compiling the best references out there, here are 12 moments when K-pop crossed over to other worlds. Read on, and you just might be surprised!

1. Former U.S. President Obama mentioning SHINee

I’m aware of how fake this one sounds if you haven’t seen the video proof, but just hear me out! In a speech given last year, the former American president actually cited SHINee as a reason why young Americans wanted to learn Korean. We love a culturally aware president.

2. 2NE1’s “I Am The Best” in a Microsoft commercial

At the peak of 2NE1’s popularity, the group’s hit song “I Am The Best” was actually featured in a Microsoft advertisement, promoting the track to a countless number of people! For the K-pop stans who happened to see this commercial on TV, you must have had quite the shock.

3. BTS’s Jin and J-Hope dancing with YouTuber Ricky Dillon

During BTS’s “American Hustle Life” shoot in 2014, two members managed to accidentally appear in the video of a popular YouTuber! If you skip to the timestamp 2:50, you’ll see just a few seconds of Jin and J-Hope jamming with Ricky Dillon on Hollywood Boulevard.

4. NCT Dream members being mentioned on “NCIS: New Orleans”

I have to ask: Who over at the “NCIS” writers’ table thought to include a random NCT Dream reference in this episode? Because that person deserves a raise. Though I do have to question why this 30-year-old investigator was supposedly hanging out with the teenage Dream members in Busan, the line “Renjun, Jeno, or Chenle: who’s best?” will undoubtedly go down in K-pop history.

5. Anime soundtracks sung by K-pop idols

If you’re a big fan of both anime and K-pop, then you may have heard some music sung by your favorite idols without even realizing it! From BoA to TVXQ to 2PM, K-pop has slyly made its way into shows as big as “InuYasha” and “One Piece.” Watch the compilation below, and you might even be surprised be a couple of the tracks.

6. BTOB and Jay Park appearing on “America’s Next Top Model”

Several seasons ago, “America’s Next Top Model” took their top contestants to Seoul for the final phase of the competition, allowing both BTOB and Jay Park to appear on the show! The models danced to BTOB’s “Beep Beep” as the BTOB members judged their performances. Plus, Peniel got a good amount of English speaking parts!

Though he only appeared for a short time, here’s Jay’s bit as well!

7. The “Family Guy” parody of HyunA’s “Bubble Pop”

In a hilarious spoof of “Bubble Pop,” the characters of “Family Guy” beg Quagmire to give up his obsession with K-pop and Korean culture in general. As if the irony of using a K-pop song to achieve this goal wasn’t ridiculous enough, the lyrics and visuals of this video will definitely make you laugh too!

8. K-pop dances in video games

To all my gamers out there, rejoice! There are so many video game characters whose moves take inspiration from K-pop dances, I’ve actually lost count. “League of Legends” alone references BIGBANG, TWICE, and PSY, plus many more!

In this particular clip, the popular game “Fortnite” incorporates choreo from both Lovelyz and GFRIEND in one particular dance sequence!

9. The Wonder Girls’ movie on TeenNick

What a throwback! Back in the heyday of the Wonder Girls, the members all starred in a made-for-TV movie that aired on Nickelodeon. Though this level of American promotion for a K-pop group is amazing, you have to admit that the movie itself is a little cheesy. Give JYP an Oscar for this one!

10. BIGBANG’s “Fantastic Baby” on “Glee”

As a tribute to the performance aspect of K-pop, the “Glee” characters spent some time learning a choreographed dance to “Fantastic Baby.” Considering “Glee” is a show known for its quality musical performances, it makes perfect sense that they’d acknowledge such an iconic K-pop song!

11. BLACKPINK’s “Whistle” as background music on FreeForm’s “The Bold Type”

Fans of BLACKPINK had a little surprise in store for them when they watched the pilot of American TV show “The Bold Type”! Watch the clip below to hear the group’s debut song “Whistle” playing in the background of this scene.

12. Tiffany Young singing at an LA Dodgers baseball game

Imagine that you’re at Dodger stadium ready to watch a baseball game, when suddenly Tiffany walks out to sing the national anthem! I’m pretty sure that any of us would be in awe at the very sight of her. Needless to say, Tiffany nailed those vocals and then some!

Where have you unexpectedly encountered K-pop in your life? Tell us your stories in the comments below!

BIGBANG’s Seungri Reveals Secret Method Idols Use To Exchange Numbers At “Inkigayo”

Dec 27, 2018

On the latest episode of SBS’s “I Will Win You Over with My Channel,” BIGBANG’s Seungri dished on what goes on behind the scenes at “Inkigayo“!

The December 27 broadcast of the variety show featured Kwanghee, who was recently discharged from the military, returning to the “Inkigayo” cafeteria for the first time in years. While watching the footage from the studio, Seungri commented with a sly smile, “That cafeteria on the fourth floor is really an incredible place.”

He went on to explain, “No one’s allowed to eat in the waiting rooms [at ‘Inkigayo’], so all the performing artists always wind up eating in the cafeteria on the fourth floor. That’s where lots of things end up happening.”

Yang Se Hyung asked, “Between the singers?” Seungri replied, “Yes. So many things happen there, at that cafeteria on the fourth floor.”

He then revealed one method that idols could use to secretly exchange phone numbers backstage at the music show.

Referring to the famously delicious “Inkigayo sandwiches” sold at the cafeteria, Seungri asked, “You know those sandwiches? You know how they’re wrapped in plastic? Sometimes people would unwrap one side of the plastic, slip their phone number inside, and give [the sandwich] to someone.”

Kwanghee exclaimed with a laugh, “You’ve clearly done this before!” He turned to Yang Se Hyung and said, “He’s talking about himself.”

However, Seungri insisted, “This story wasn’t about me.”

Seungri reveals idols exchange numbers at the convenience store in the ‘Inkigayo’ building

A lot goes on in the ‘Inkigayo‘ convenience store, according to Seungri.

On the December 27 airing of SBS‘ ‘I Will Win You Over With My Channel,’ the MCs watched the footage prepared by Kwanghee.

In the clip, Kwanghee is captured visiting the convenience store located in the ‘Inkigayo’ building. Watching the scene from the studio, Seungri commented, “That 4th-floor convenience store is an amazing place,” and said, “You are now allowed to eat in that building so everyone gathers there to eat.”

The veteran idol star then revealed, “Many, many things happen there.” Yang Se Hyungasked, “How do they have ‘something’ there?” Seungri replied, “You peel the wrap off the ‘Inkigayo’ sandwich and write down each other’s number on it.”Kwanghee and Yang Se Hyung asked Seungri if that’s his own experience. Seungri made laughter as he quickly answered, “No, not me.”

BIGBANG – The eternal Kpop king came from blood and tear

SOS(story of star) – Stories of stars when they just debuted that we don’t know and behind-the-scenes stories told by them

Is there anyone in Korea that does not know Bigbang?

Bigbang joined the Korean entertainment industry in 2006 and until now, the group still maintains its unprecedented major impact as they are present in music, fashion and all other trends that young people are fond of. Five members G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Daesung, and Seungri all possess outstanding talents and receive the public’s love and admiration in many aspects, from refined music, trendy fashion style, dynamic activities on entertainment programs as well as television to their collaboration with world-famous brands.

Their enthusiastic activities have connected the whole world. With G-Dragon as the center, their self-composed songs have taken the worldwide charts by storm. Their fashion sense has also been noticed by prestigious brands. In 2015, the American economics magazine Forbes wrote Bigbang’s name at No.23 on the list of musicians with the highest income in the world and said, “The Seoul-based boyband pulled in $44 million (51.7 billion won) last year”. The group was also ranked at the 13th position in the list of highest-earning figures that were under 30 years old.

Overcoming all individual incidents, Bigbang still maintains the same number of members after over 10 years and is waiting for their return. Except for Seungri, the remaining members are performing their military services. Seungri is expected to follow them to join the army soon. Previously, in the press conference on the occasion of their 10th anniversary of debut, Taeyang said, “Thanks everyone for giving us a lot of love in the past 10 years, hope that we still have your support in the next 10 years.” After that, T.O.P also expressed his desire, “I hope to receive more and more love from the fans and develop even more in the next 20 to 30 years. That way, I’ll be able to continue having anniversaries like this 10-year milestone.”

▶ Building YG, leading Kpop

Bigbang also came from a survival show. From the six trainees at that time, Bigbang was formed with 5 members like today. To become the present Bigbang, they had to go through such a tough training period that Yang Hyun Suk once said “Ji Yong, can you stop practicing and go home?” – the utterance that is still repeated up until now. Even after their debut, Bigbang still constantly made efforts and shed a lot of sweats and blood in the practice room in YG’s basement.

The fruit of these efforts is the outstanding success of “Lie” – a song released in 2007. The song swept through musical charts for seven consecutive weeks and helped the group win the Daesang award “Song of the Year” at the “2007 MKMF Music Festival” awards ceremony. Then, the group continuously released many hits such as “Last Farewell”, “Haru Haru”, “Sunset Glow” and headed to Japan market. The group made a great achievement as a foreign artist that attracted a total of 4,205,500 spectators to their Dome tour for five years in a row. In addition to working within the group, each member has also conducted solo and unit activities such as GD&TOP, GD&Taeyang and gained many outstanding results. The group has gone beyond the basement training room, helped the company set up a new headquarters and turned Hapjeong Ward into YG’s street.

▶ “Hot” from head to toe

In the fashion world, Bigbang is also well treated as “superstar”. It is because what they do always becomes trends. At the time of debut, the fashion style of combining skinny jeans and High top sneakers of the group caused a fashion wave among men. Since then, the male started to wear skinny jeans – the piece of clothing that was known to be only suitable for women. Sports brands also began to sell High top sneakers. At that time, Bigbang worked actively as representative models for a sneaker brand. In particular, G-Dragon also pursued unisex – a fashion style for both sexes. With a diverse fashion taste regardless of street brand or luxury brand name, he also made Chanel director Karl Lagerfeld admire him. Even before enlistment, G-Dragon also participated in various fashion events as a “muse” of Channel.

Bigbang is also the group showing that they can transform unlimitedly with various man hairstyles. The group has tried a variety of hairstyles from long bun to shaved hair, mohican, wolf cut, etc. In particular, G-Dragon’s last wolf cut hairstyle before joining the army is still the favorite choice of many celebrities until now. Just search on the portal sites and you will easily come across the photos of many artists with this wolf cut hair, for example Baekhyun (EXO), male singer Dean, actor Nam Joo Hyuk or Song Mino (Winner), etc.

▶ Restlessly setting records

The achievements of Bigbang are countless. Bigbang has dominated the whole K-pop music industry for the past 10 years as the leading boy group. That has been proven through a series of records such as being the first K-pop singer group to enter Billboard’s main chart with a Korean album in 2012, the first idol group whose MV hit 200 million views on YouTube, the first Korean artists to enter the top 100 celebrities voted by Forbes. At the moment, Bigbang still stays at the peak of their career. Bigbang is the only idol group that has maintained their heyday with respectable achievements throughout 10 years of activity. Despite getting old, the fans never stop supporting the group. The public always places their trust in Bigbang’s music and the evidence is that the first fan song titled “Flower Road” has swept through all music charts. In particular, they are known as a group owning many male fans so it is easy to find the videos that captured the scene of the members being bewildered by the male fans’ enthusiastic cheers.

Being the member who fills the void of his four brothers, youngest member Seungri promised, “Before their enlistment, I promised them that I would work actively so that everyone would not feel the absence of Bigbang. To keep that promise, I have been working really hard, I will also prepare painstakingly for the last solo tour in order to present a beautiful look to fans before performing my military service. We will send our greetings to everyone with the full line-up soon.”
