GIG REVIEW: TAEYANG’S 2017 WORLD TOUR ‘WHITE NIGHT’ IN VANCOUVER

BIGBANG’s Taeyang meets a packed house on both 14 & 15 September shows, at the Vancouver stop of his White Night tour.

Taeyang ends the North American leg of his White Night tour in Vancouver’s Orpheum Theatre, not with a whimper, but a bang.

It’s Taeyang’s first time in Vancouver, and he’s greeted by thousands of fans. As the lights dim, cheers build, filling the walls of the former vaudeville house until the sound washes over the music the band is playing. Taeyang makes his way through the split screens mounted atop the elevated set, as fog pours over the stage. He’s a glamorous personification his sunny stage name: he sports platinum blonde hair and an all-white outfit, including a jacket covered in jewels.

It’s a highly-produced and tightly-run spectacle: visual displays of rolling landscapes, the elements, and galaxies colour the titular “white night” concept (a phenomenon in which polar areas of the globe experience 24 hours of sunlight), and almost non-stop performances don’t leave much time for audience members to anticipate what’s coming next.

The BIGBANG vocalist’s high-energy set features songs from his recently-released White Night solo album, in addition to hits that emerged through his 11-year music career. Following his White Night intro, he sets the explosive mood of the concert with his 2013 electronic track Ringa Linga (링가 링가), and goes straight into the poppy Body (아름다워), a song that features vocals of YG labelmate CL, from the now-disbanded K-Pop juggernaut 2NE1.

On multiple instances, Taeyang resembles a rock star over a pop idol. Backed by four instrumentalists, he commands the audience’s attention behind scarf-decorated mic stands (surely an homage to Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler), choosing live music over prepared tracks. However, he makes no compromise about breaking the illusion in favour of his pop idol identity, as he occasionally allows pre-recorded backing vocals to take over while he executes choreography, assisted by a talented group of dancers.

Somehow, it all just works.

His rock star persona is most prominent in the second half of the show with Tonight (오늘밤), a performance musically and visually reminiscent to Michael Jackson’s Earth Song. He plays up this persona further into Love You to Death, before slowing down with a stripped down version of BIGBANG’s Last Dance, in which he accompanies himself on the keyboard. He “ends” with his recent single, Darling, before coming back for a six-song encore that includes BIGBANG hits Bang Bang Bang (뱅뱅뱅) and Fantastic Baby, and finishing with his 2014 chart-topper, 눈,코,입 (Eyes, Nose, Lips).

The 24-song set list is a testament to Taeyang’s impressive stamina and pacing: he mixes up dance tracks with vocally-challenging ballads, maintaining the cohesive R&B-pop sound that sets his music apart from BIGBANG’s edgier, hip hop-influenced style. Audience sing-along favourites include Wedding Dress and I Need A Girl, a reminder of his long-standing international popularity as a solo artist (writer’s note: as a non-kpop fan during my high school years, even I knew of Wedding Dress when it first came out – it was played everywhere).

Taeyang’s 2014 MAMA performance of Eyes, Nose, Lips displayed his team’s creative use of stage lighting, and they follow through with the same level of craftsmanship for this tour. Purposeful use of fog, spot lighting and lasers, on top of grandiose imagery, transforms Taeyang’s performance from a pop show into a visual master class on concert lighting design.

While some K-Pop acts make use of translators when performing overseas, Taeyang prepares his speeches in complete English, making for smoother audience interactions not subject to translation delays. In return, fans respond with enthusiasm, fervently waving their VIP (BIGBANG’s fandom name) light sticks, and filling the venue with cheers and screams of “I love you!”

Overall, Taeyang’s charismatic and passionate performances, in addition to the creative work put into the show, presents a man who takes being an idol to heart, and loves what he does. The White Night tour is well-curated and visually-impressive, and proves to be a pop music spectacle that even non-fans of the K-Pop genre can appreciate.

Seungri surprises G-Dragon at his concert, ends up getting dragged off the stage for talking too much

G-Dragon,Seungri

G-Dragon had to drag Seungri off the stage when the BIGBANG maknae wouldn’t stop chit-chatting on his stage.

Currently, G-Dragon is continuing his ‘Act III, M.O.T.T.E’ World Tour. His most recent stops were at the famous Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan, where he held concerts on September 19 and 20. The shows in Japan turned extra special for both G-Dragon and his fans as fellow BIGBANG member Seungri made a surprise guest appearance.

At first, G-Dragon welcomed the maknae with much love, however, he ended up dragging Seungri off the stage when he overstayed his welcome. Even while getting dragged off the stage, Seungri continued to hog the mic, screaming, “I’ll see you guys at the end of the year at BIGBANG dome tour! I will lose some weight by then so don’t throw me away~ Please wait for me. I’ll be back looking good.”

Watch the hilarious moment from G-Dragon’s solo concert in the clip below.

This may have some weight, as during Daesung’s August concert in Japan, he told fans, “When I am done with promotions this year, I might have a long hiatus. But I think it’s the best choice for BIGBANG to have a new start.

Here’s Why Seungri Might Be The Most Successful Maknae In All Of K-Pop

While all of the members of BIGBANG are each successful in their individual ways, Seungri has his own unique way of making money while he’s not making music.

At only 26 years old, Seungri owns several businesses, including a chain of bars called Monkey Museum, ramen restaurants, a global DJ label called Natural High Records, and even a medical company!

Many netizens believe that Seungri is even more successful than G-Dragon not because of the money he makes, but because he always seems to be enjoying his life rather than working 24/7.

Seungri posts frequently on Instagram showing himself hanging out with friends and going to clubs.

Or, if he’s not out partying, he loves to relax.

It’s no surprise Seungri is being called the most successful maknae in K-Pop.

G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Jay Park Were Supposed To Debut As A Trio

An old interview Yang Hyun Suk resurfaced where he shared previous plans of putting BIGBANG’s G-Dragon, Taeyang and Jay Park into one group.

The interview was an excerpt from SBS Midnight TV Entertainment back in 2011.

The YG Entertainment head planned that all three to make their debut before it was eventually scrapped.

“This will be the first time I will reveal this. Prior to BIGBANG’s debut, I had planned for G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Jay Park to be in one group.

However, we were all not able to get together due to their busy schedules and we made up on our own teams instead.”

– Yang Hyun Suk

Jay Park eventually went on to train with JYP Entertainment and debut as a member of 2PM in 2008.

He left the group and the agency in 2009 and continued working as a solo artist two years later.

Recently, he signed with American record label Roc Nation.

G-Dragon and Taeyang, on the other hand, made their debut with Seungri, Daesung, and T.O.P for BIGBANG in 2006.

Watch: Taeyang Is The Ultimate Professional During Concert Performance

Taeyang has recently made a successful comeback with his album “White Night” and is currently meeting fans at his second solo world tour. One of his stops was San Jose, California, where fans were able to see him perform for the first time in years. Taeyang did not disappoint, and was his usual charismatic self on stage, despite a slight hiccup on stage when he hit himself with the mic and got a nosebleed.

Taeyang was in the middle of performing “Only Look At Me” when he accidentally hits the mic stand, which flips the mic which hits him in the face.

He was able to quickly recover and continue the soulful performance as if nothing has happened. However, many fans noticed that his nose was bleeding from where the mic hit his face. Taeyang, however, is an utter professional and finishes the song.

Various Reviews of Taeyang’s [WHITE NIGHT] in USA Tour 2017

K-Pop Star Taeyang Shines Bright During His White Night World Tour

K-Pop Star Taeyang Shines Bright During His White Night World Tour

A white night is a natural phenomenon in the arctic where the sun never sets at night during summer nights. Playing off of his stage name Taeyang, which means “sun” in Korean, the Korean singer shone brighter than ever before last night at The Wiltern during his first solo show in Los Angeles. After holding multiple concerts in the past as part of the highly successful K-pop group BIGBANG, Taeyang came back to LA after two years, this time to close out the U.S. leg of his “White Night” world tour.

Taeyang (real name Young-bae Dong) began his career back in 2006 as a member of BIGBANG. And while he’s always been part of the group, he started his solo ventures as early as 2008 and has since released three full-length albums and one EP. With BIGBANG’s music being a mix of electropop and hip-hop, Taeyang’s voice has provided an R&B touch, something he has explored more deeply in his solo work and the genre he’s known for as an artist. His latest, White Night, gave the name of his worldwide tour, which started in Japan last month, and as the song used as the night’s intro.

As the screen on stage parted in the middle to reveal Taeyang, decked in a very appropriate all white and shimmering ensemble and platinum blond hair, the 29-year-old delved into his first song of the night, the 2013 trap and dubstep hit “Ringa Linga.” As one of his few hype songs, it kicked off the show on a high as he followed up with the similarly energetic “Body,” “Superstar,” and “Wake Me Up.”

Since this particular tour was meant to promote his latest album, the overall song selection and rearrangement of the older tracks were catered to fit White Night’s vibe. Still R&B at its core, Taeyang got a bit more experimental with synthier, livelier sounds and more mature themes (see “Naked” and “Tonight,” complete with body rolls and spread eagles from the female dancers). Most notably rearranged were his 2010 singles “Wedding Dress,” toning down the dated synths and taking out the autotune, and “I Need A Girl,” which he started off acoustically and then picked up after the first chorus. He also opted to show off his stellar vocals with his classic R&B jams, new and old, like “Only Look At Me” and his most recent single, “Darling.”

Taeyang has cited that his biggest influences when working on White Night were Michael Jackson, Prince, and Freddie Mercury — all of which he channeled throughout his set. Whether he was ooh-oohing during the funky “Amazin’” or rocking out to “Tonight,” his inspirations were present, but it still felt very Taeyang with his choreography and bedroom eyes charm. “Personally, out of all my albums, this was the most fun to make,” he told the crowd in English, reading off a monitor on stage. He co-wrote and co-produced most songs on the album, roles that he has been taking on more frequently as he grew out of the K-pop idol mold.

With the reality of his upcoming compulsory service with the South Korean military looming over the tour (all able-bodied Korean males must serve two mandatory years), Taeyang took this as an opportunity to treat VIPs (BIGBANG’s fans), as this will most likely be the last time they meet in a while. The singer included BIGBANG’s “Fantastic Baby,” “Bang Bang Bang,” and the group’s farewell song to their fans “Last Dance” (member TOP is currently serving, putting the group on hiatus) in his set, which hands down drew the biggest reception from fans who danced and screamed along. “Every time I sing [‘Last Dance,’] I miss the BIGBANG members a lot,” he told the crowd. He also performed “Good Boy,” which he released with fellow member G-Dragon as a duo in 2014.

Another unexpected highlight of the night came towards the end when the singer announced a special guest. This turned out to be Ysabelle Cuevas, a nursing student from the Bay area, who posted an English cover of “Wake Me Up” last month and Taeyang reposted on his Instagram account. After meeting him at his San Jose stop three days ago and identifying herself by singing the chorus, Taeyang brought her out in LA to sing her rendition. “You will get lots of fans after this,” he told Cuevas after her performance. “I’m already your fan.”

Keeping in mind that the White Night tour — with its mesmerizing visuals, world class live band and production, and award show-like performances — was designed to fill out arenas and stadiums in Asia, it was an amazing experience to witness it at a small venue like The Wiltern. It felt intimate yet the quality did not come down on any front, which was reflected by the show’s hefty price tag (the cheapest tickets were sold for $130). If anything, concertgoers lucked out at seeing Taeyang perform 24 songs up close rather than a mile away.

Singing in an entirely different language, English speaking K-pop fans tend to benefit from the key English phrases sprinkled on songs that are easy to sing along to. Taeyang has those too, of course, (“Girl, I need a girl/Baby I need you/Girl you need me too” on “I Need A Girl” or “My name is T to the A to the E/(to the)/Y to the A N G” on “Ringa Linga”). But being able to hold a mic in the air and have the audience sing entire verses of your all Korean song “Eyes, Nose, Lips” is something few Korean acts can even fathom. Closing out the night with his biggest hit to date, Taeyang and the crowd serenaded each other the gut wrenching aforementioned ballad with the bittersweet yet fitting goodbye, “All of our love/It hurts so much/But now I’ll call you a memory.”

After last night’s show, Taeyang will be heading up to Vancouver where he’ll conclude his eight stop North American tour, which will then be followed by the Asia stops.

TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in ATLANTA – Review & Recap

by Dee

South Korean star TAEYANG from BIGBANG performed at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, Georgia last Wednesday night. The last time Taeyang performed by himself in North America was when he headlined for the MTV Music Experiment 2.0 concert on November 26, 2013 in San Francisco. The Music Experiment 2.0 was a themed, social-media powered music series where tickets are awarded to fans through social media contests.

Dreamkatchers Initiative | TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in ATLANTA – Review & Recap

Taeyang’s debut solo release, Solar, occupied the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on the Canadian and US iTunes R&B/Soul album chart which was a first for an Asian artist. In 2014 his second solo album, Rise, hit No. 1 on Billboard‘s World Albums in its first week. Among kpop solo albums, Rise currently still holds the record for highest-charting album on the Billboard 200 when it hit No. 112 in June 2014. Taeyang’s latest album, White Night, debuts at No. 1 on Billboard‘s World Albums chart marking it his second consecutive release to do so.

Dreamkatchers Initiative | TAEYANG: WHITE NIGHT in ATLANTA – Review & Recap

He burst onto the stage dressed all in white with White Night. It was the start of a high-energy set that showed off his vocal prowess and a stage presence that simply dominated.

On stage Taeyang is simply captivating, exudes confidence and charisma but at the same time sincerity. He took the time to have conversations with audience members who shouted questions and song requests at him. He was genuinely amused as he scolded the audience when they kept guessing wrong as to which song he was going to sing next. The audience loved the interactions.

He never let up, working the audience and the stage with his hip-hop style dance moves on fast paced songs such as Ringa Linga and Love You to Death, and getting the audience to sing most of I Need a Girl for him. Backed by a four-piece band, whom he introduced during the encore, he hit the high notes wonderfully on songs such as Darling and Amazin’. He even played the keyboard for the Last Dance.

During the encore, he added a few BigBang tracks such as Bang Bang Bang and Fantastic Baby – certainly a sweet treat for the fans.

Taeyang White Night Tour in Chicago

Taeyang made his third stop of his 2017 World Tour White Night at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago on Sunday, September 3rd. The South Korean singer is under YG Entertainment and originally debuted in 2006 as a part of BIGBANG. He began his solo career 2008 and recently celebrated 11 years with BIGBANG this past August. The theater buzzed with anticipation as the show began. The screams of fans nearly drowned out the start of “White Night.” The track was a voice over with only the live band on stage and a beautiful video of the sky, clouds, and stars played on the screen at the back of the stage.

The opening song seamlessly transitioned into “Ringa Linga“, with Taeyang appearing on the second level tier of the stage. He practically glowed in the stage lights in his all white ensemble that fit the White Night tour theme. He commands the stage, even as he is joined by his male back up dancers. The backup dancers didn’t only add to his performance, it helped highlighted his stage presence.

Taeyang pauses after the song to say hello and hype the crowd. “Y’all ready? I can’t hear you. Chicago you all ready?” Fans scream and wave their BIGBANG lightsticks, the yellow lights looking a bit like stars. “Nice to meet you guys. I love ya.” Taeyang continues to get the fans singing “say yeah” with him as the next song “Body” starts.

Taeyang is joined by female back-up dancers which brings a sensual vibe to the upbeat song. He makes great use of the two tiers of the stage, moving up and down alone and with the dancers. He calls out “everybody jump” and the crowd turned unto an ocean of bodies moving up and down with the beat.
