BIGBANG officially become YouTube trailblazers

With 3 World Music Awards and an MTV Italian Music Award under their belt, these five chart-topping artists show no signs of slowing down.

One of the world’s most popular bands, BIGBANG, has done it again by surpassing every other K-Pop singer in the YouTube subscriber department. They are the first band in their genre to reach 8 million subscribers. They have close to 4 billion channel views since it opened in October 2005. Each member has done a terrific job with their solo careers, but it’s the core group that shot them to superstardom.

SM Entertainment’s YouTube account (SMTOWN) is the only other K-Pop account, which features all the bands from their agency, that has more subscribers than them. You may remember BIGBANG best for their hit singles “Fantastic Baby”, “Bad Boy” and “Monster”. Members G-dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Daesung, and Seungri have all stood out for their explosive solo albums, tours and acting. G-dragon and Taeyang both embarked on US tours this year.

Watch: Taeyang Outdoes His Season One Duet And Brings “Fantastic Duo 2” Record High Viewer Ratings

Last year, BIGBANG member Taeyang appeared on SBS’s “Fantastic Duo” where he left a legendary performance of “Eyes, Nose, Lips” with female contestant “Rhythm Gangster.” Many wondered if he could outdo his previous performance when he appeared on “Fantastic Duo 2.”

According to Nielsen Korea, the September 10 episode of SBS’s “Fantastic Duo” starring Taeyang and Baek Ji Young recorded the highest national viewer ratings of 7.9 percent for part one and 11 percent for part two of the show. Unlike his first season’s choice, Taeyang chose the male contestant “Dunk Shoot” to perform “Darling” and beat Baek Ji Young, which recorded 14.5 percent, the highest ratings per minute.

PD Kim Young Wook of “Fantastic Duo 2” said, “I didn’t expect [the enthusiastic response] at all,” then added, “Taeyang felt pressure because his season one performance with Rhythm Gangster was unbeatable. But because of that pressure, I think he used that energy to make a better performance.”

“Fantastic Duo 2” airs on Sundays at 6:25 p.m. KST. Watch Taeyang and Baek Ji Young compete against each other on “Fantastic Duo 2!”

Jeju Shinhwa World to open theme park, G-Dragon cafe

JEJU, Sept. 11 (Yonhap) — Jeju Shinhwa World, a resort complex under development on the resort island of Jeju, is gearing up to open a theme park and a K-pop entertainment center, a provincial investment promotion center said Monday.

The resort project developed by Landing Jeju Development has opened in stages from earlier this year to offer over 300 condominiums and villas, and is set to open a theme park on Sept. 30, said Jeju Free International City Development Center (JDC), a government institution which promotes investment on the island.

Landing Jeju Development is a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Landing International Development, which mainly invests in resort and entertainment businesses.

The resort will also have a cafe and a bowling alley designed by BIGBANG leader G-Dragon in YG Town, a K-pop and leisure complex tentatively named after YG Entertainment, next month, JDC said.

The resort, which spans approximately 2.5 million square meters, will gradually open other facilities, including a movie theme park, a casino, a K-pop entertainment center and a water park by 2019.

A movie theme park partnered by Lions Gate Entertainment Corporation, an American entertainment company, will open in the resort complex in 2019 to feature seven movie zones themed after blockbuster films, including “The Hunger Games,” “The Twilight Saga” and “Now You See Me.”

A total of 1.32 trillion won (US$1.18 billion) in foreign direct investment, mostly from Chinese citizens, has been injected into the 2-trillion-won project, JDC said, noting it is actively seeking funds from non-Chinese investors to diversify sources of investment.

PD of “Fantastic Duo” says Taeyang is an unique singer and is the symbol of the program

BIGBANG’s Taeyang made an appearance in SBS’ “Fantastic Duo” a year ago and attracted great attention of the public. He showed great performance, showing off his outstanding singing skills. And recently, yeah, he appeared in the second season of the program. Did you watch the episode? Well, he absolutely electrified viewers again by singing his songs such as “Wake me up”, “Eyes, nose, lips” and “Only look at me”.

You know, a variety of great k-pop singers including Lee Sunhee, Lee Moonsae, PSY, IU and Baek Jiyoung have appeared in “Fantastic Duo”. And yeah, BIGBANG’s Daesung has appeared in the program too. But, actually, it seems like Taeyang was the best guest to the producer of the program. Check out what the producer talked about Taeyang.

Taeyang is a really great singer. And he’s good-natured and faithful too. Lyric writer Lim Eana once said Taeyang is as hot as the noonday sun, and I totally agree with her. Taeyang is an unique singer. And I think he is the symbol of “Fantastic Duo”. When he appeared in the first season of the program, he showed outstanding performance, and his performance video was really hot on the Internet. Actually, when I asked him to appear in the second season of the program, he was reluctant to do it. He said he felt pressured to do better than he did in the first season. But, he eventually made up his mind to appear in the program again, and he did best to show great performance.

Taeyang’s White Night at Madison Square Garden

Taeyang, member of popular K-Pop group BIGBANG came full circle since he first performed at the Theater at Madison Square Garden back in 2006 with the YG Family Tour. Now over ten years later, he’s back for his first solo tour in the United States and a new album White Night. The fans crowded into the theater and waited for the man of the hour to come on stage.

The anticipation was at a climax as the introduction song finished playing and the stage screen opened up to reveal Taeyang, donning silver hair and a head-to-toe white outfit, as he went straight into the high energy “Ringa Linga.” The audience was immediately hyped as everyone sang and danced along. The excitement and energy remained high with the next two songs, “Body” and “Superstar,” both showcasing amazing choreography from both Taeyang and his backup dancers. After a short interlude video, Taeyang returned to the stage to sing “Wake Me Up,” a song off of his newly released album, as he was surrounded by his dancers and bright colorful flowers swirled in the background. The slightly subdued mood continued with “Only Look At Me” and the legendary crowd favorite “Wedding Dress.”

Taeyang took a short break to greet the audience and reminisce about the times he performed in New York as well as to talk about his new album before launching into “Amazin’.” Throughout the entire show, Taeyang showed off his impressive dance moves as he effortlessly glided across the stage, oozing confidence and swagger. Fans waved their arms in the air for “1AM” and enjoyed solo performances from the backing band after Taeyang left the stage.

Taeyang returned to the stage sporting a jacket full of feathers to sing “Naked,” another song off of his new album. Continuing with the sexy vibe, Taeyang danced around in red lights and lasers as he sang “So Good.” “I Need A Girl” slowed things down a bit, but the intensity of the crowd only increased as he exhibited copious amounts of charm and talent, and everyone sang along. After a few more songs and another interlude video, Taeyang returned to the stage. “Tonight” and “Love You To Death” followed, bathed in dramatic lighting and a full-on rocker vibe that allowed Taeyang to captivate the audience and transition into “Last Dance,” a song from BIGBANG’s MADE album. Taeyang sang the song beautifully even without his fellow band members while he played the keyboard and the audience crooned along. The last song of the set was “Darling.” Knowing that the concert was coming to an end, the audience gave it their all to sing along before Taeyang left the sage.

Fans immediately started cheering for an encore and Taeyang reciprocated by bursting back onto the stage with “Break Down.” The encore continued with “Good Boy” which got everyone out of their seats dancing. Taeyang continued dancing around the stage for “Stay With Me” after which he thanked the dancers, backing band, staff, and audience for a great show. As Taeyang said his goodbyes and started to exit the stage, he turned around and asked if the audience wanted him to sing another song and to everyone’s surprise the music started back up and BIGBANG’s “Bang Bang Bang” began to play. If anyone had remained sitting till then it was a matter of seconds before that all changed: the audience waved their fists in the air and danced along with the choreography in unison. The theater burst with energy with an undeniable party atmosphere as he continued on to “Fantastic Baby” and wandered close to the audience to get everyone even more riled up. After joking with the audience, the final song of the night and arguably his most popular song was “Eyes, Nose, Lips.” Fans sang passionately along as they knew the concert was truly coming at its close.

Time and time again, whether it is preforming solo or as 1/5 of BIGBANG, Taeyang proves once again that he is a force to be reckoned with in the pop world. A true showman, he excels in singing and dancing while giving a truly enjoyable performance to fans—old and new.

[Billboard] Taeyang Talks ‘White Night’ Album & Tour, BIGBANG, Mandatory Military Service

Courtesy of YG Entertainment
Tae Yang performs at Madison Square Garden on Sept. 1, 2017 in New York City.

“All things, to me, go back to being a member of BIGBANG,” he says.

On stage Taeyang is captivating, with vocals and a stage presence that exudes confidence and charisma. One of South Korea’s most popular R&B K-pop idols, he’s made his name (and career) as a member of BIGBANG. But that’s only the beginning for the 29-year-old, whose also seen success with his solo releases, though he remains true to his origins.

“All things, to me, go back to being a member of BIGBANG,” the artist tells Billboard.

Decked out in black sweats and Balenciaga high tops, he exuded simplicity in comparison to the flair of his bedazzled and befeathered, primarily white, stage outfits. “I would describe myself as a very plain but very honest person,” he says. “I don’t really hype myself up with fancy things. I do a lot less than other celebrities because I like being honest. I just want the audience to see that the performances are a real representation of myself.”

Unlike his bandmate G-Dragon — whose existential crisis in the face of lifelong stardom was the focal point of his New York City concert in July — the artist sees little difference between who he is as Taeyang, a stage name meaning “sun” in Korean, and as Dong Youngbae, his given name. “Taeyang has a microphone and makeup, and Youngbae doesn’t,” he said with a characteristically wry grin.

Eleven years into his career as a member of one of South Korea’s most acclaimed boy bands, his Sept. 1 concert at the Theater at MSG in New York was the singer’s first ever solo show in the United States, one of six stateside performances on his White Night tour. Part showcase for his new album and part testament to his long-lived career — he performed BIGBANG’s hits “Bang Bang Bang,” “Fantastic Baby,” and “Last Dance,” the latter of which he revealed was originally meant as a solo track– the White Night concert will be the last time many fans are able to K-pop star for the next few years. It also serves as a farewell tour before he is begins his compulsory service with South Korea’s military in upcoming months.

With a small laugh, the artist acknowledged that the album’s release and the accompanying concert series were driven by the upcoming event in his life — like all able-bodied South Korean men, Taeyang must take a break from his career to fulfill his mandatory duty. “The album just conveniently became finished around now,” he said. “I started getting to work on it earnestly at the beginning of this year, but actually began working on new music whenever I had any free time since the [2014] Rise album.”

While Rise served as a lesson in production, taking four years to complete, it was created as he was going through some hard times and the lengthy process made Taeyang feel the need to start something new. “I just wanted to finish it and start off with a fresh slate,” he said. And so he went into the new project that would become White Night with a different state of mind than how he created the previous album: “I wanted to express a more honest version of myself, I wanted to be more genuine. At the same time, I wanted to experience a broader musical spectrum and bring it into my music.”

Taeyang followed the titular concepts of his past albums, all of which have related to the celestial body he takes his stage name from, and picked WhiteNight — or a night that never is properly dark — for the name of his next project. “It’s a natural phenomena and so I wanted to conjure that imagery into a sound.” The building “White Night” intro track served as a dynamic opener that would set the tone for the whole work and grab listeners’ attentions, while the album ends things off with “Tonight,” a laid back jam featuring Zico that Taeyang says is a song “reminiscent of a strong burning sun.”

“Musically, I wanted to come up with a timeless feeling to present to my fans, that felt both new and very original at the same time. It has chic beats and is very experimental, and incorporates a lot of different kinds of music,” he said. Keeping with the classic vibes, Taeyang drew inspiration from three greats when considering what step or sound to take next on White Night: Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury and Prince.

Working on new music in anticipation of his next album while prepping for BIGBANG’s MADE album ended up working out nicely for Taeyang; his latest single “Darling” was originally intended to be his solo track on the band’s album. But the song’s mellifluous piano chord wasn’t clicking with the melody originally planned for it and Taeyang didn’t feel comfortable including the solo in what would be the group’s last album before members began enlisting.”Darling” was eventually rejected for MADE and put on a hard drive’s back burner. “But while I was working with my team to conceptualize White Night, we hit writer’s block and couldn’t come up with a single that I felt would resonate with listeners,”he said. “I wanted something with a similar feel to ‘Eyes, Nose, Lips,’ a similar flow, a similar style, but that had even deeper emotional depth. And that’s when I remembered the older song.”

Taeyang’s quintessential R&B ballad “Eyes, Nose, Lips” played a major role in guiding White Night, with YG Entertainment head Yang Hyun Suk opting for the familiar vibe of “Darling” as White Night’s lead single despite the singer himself preferring the hazy synths of “Wake Me Up.” “After recording it, we all really liked [“Wake Me Up”] and thought that it would be the song that represents the entire album and would become a song that shows a new style of vocal performance from me,” he said. “It’d be an optimal way to show a new side to my music.” The song ended up getting its own glitter-infused music video but wasn’t promoted formally as a single.

Another personal favorite of Taeyang’s on White Night is “Ride,” the first song that was created explicitly for the album: “It has a vibe that I really enjoy, and a kind of classic feel that reminds me of Michael Jackson’s music. I want people to start liking this style because it’s my favorite, so I hope to make more songs like this in the future.”

With an eye on the trends, and charts, Taeyang worked with his team to craft White Night as an album that would suitably follow up the success of Rise and appeal to the public. But while the new album resonated with stateside K-pop fans and has remained steady atop of the World Album chart for two weeks, neither “Darling” nor the album saw widespread success in Korea once it dropped. “I really want to know why [it failed to chart in Korea],” he told Billboard. “I was really satisfied with the album, the songwriting process, prepping for the concert, everything. It was one of the most fulfilling seasons of my career. But, at the same time, Korean charts are really important for me as a Korean artist working with a Korean production team. People may not understand it now, but hopefully someday White Night will be appreciated in the future by listeners. I’m so satisfied that I’m able to create an album like this in my career right now.”

Though White Night will be the last album from Taeyang before he enlists, he’ll be around for quite a bit longer, and will even drop some new music before he goes on hiatus. After finishing up his White Night tour, he’ll join the three other non-enlisted members of BIGBANG at year-end performances and then he plans to release a track in collaboration with the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics in his role as an Olympic ambassador.
