Seungri held his “The Great Seungri” concert in Seoul on August 4 and 5, and enthralled fans with his upbeat performances and energetic stage presence. He candidly opened up to fans about his fears and determination, and also talked about his plans to enlist.

Though the other four members of BIGBANG couldn’t physically be there for their youngest member as they are all currently serving in the military, they sent in flower wreaths to show their support. Seungri first proudly shared a photo of the wreaths on his Instagram story on August 4 with the message, “Gaining strength from my members’ support, the first concert day will be amazing.” The photo was later shared by Yang Hyun Suk on his account on August 6.

Taeyang sent in a wreath that read, “From Private First Class Dong Young Bae. A promotion! I congratulate Lee Seung Hyun on his first solo concert.” Next to his was G-Dragon’s teasing message, which read, “From Private First Class Kwon Ji Yong. I have nothing to say,” which seems to be a play on Seungri’s previous solo track “Gotta Talk To U” (also known as “I have something to say.”) Daesung also sent in a wreath with a message stating, “From Private First Class Kang Dae Sung. I’ll count to three for you to get over here! Let’s win!” T.O.P wrote, “From T.O.P. I’m proud of our maknae (youngest member)! You don’t need to count to three [for me].”

BIGBANG is currently on hiatus as the members carry out their military service. Seungri released his solo album “The Great Seungri” on July 20 and has been busy with promotional activities. Though Seungri has not specified a set date, he has shared that he plans to enlist soon so that BIGBANG can greet fans again as five as soon as possible.

[TEN CONCERT] “SEUNGRI Is Our Everything” … Seungtsby’s Charm Needs More Than 2 Hours

[텐아시아=김하진 기자] “I worked alone hard this year. I had responsibilities as a member of BIGBANG. Many people felt positive towards this, and I appreciate it”.

Group BIGBANG’s SEUNGRI successfully finished his first solo concert ‘SEUNGRI 2019 1st SOLO TOUR in SEOU’ on August 5 at 6 PM in Jangchung Gymnasium, Seoul. He gathered 8,800 audiences for the last 2 days from August 4, noticing the start of his solo tour.

The standing seats on the first floor and seats on the 2nd floor were both filled with audiences. The fans yelled SEUNGRI’s name out loud even before the concert began, and SEUNGRI connected with the fans while freely running through the stage. He performed a total of 23 songs including his recently released solo songs and songs of BIGBANG reinterpreted by SEUNGRI as a solo version. Between songs, SEUNGRI also displayed various performances that revealed his unique charms.

SEUNGRI performed songs including ‘STRONG BABY’, ‘LET’S TALK ABOUT LOVE’, ‘GG BE’, and ‘GOTTA TALK TO YOU’ when he first appeared on stage. He stated, “I was frightened since it was my first solo concert, so thank you for filling up the seats”. He continued, “I will finish this concert successfully as I am the only member of BIGBANG remaining in society”. He reminisced while he mentioned the 4 members currently enlisted in the army.

SEUNGRI stated, “I feel like my brothers were amazing as I’m doing this concert by myself. It’s not easy singing alone”. He continued, “But actually, I feel like I can sing more. I’m planning to add more solo tracks in my concerts in Daegu and Busan”.

He sang ‘IF YOU” after explaining, “I miss my brothers”. The screen showed BIGBANG’s past videos, and SEUNGRI continued to perform the song while watching the screen. The fans also reminisced, and some of the audiences shed tears.

The last was like ‘SEUNGRI’. He changed the lyrics to “I’ll go soon as well” and displayed a video of himself wearing a military uniform. Although the video was clever, the fans felt sorry. He performed ‘HARU HARU’ and ‘LAST GOODBYE’ afterwards for the fans. The audience held the plan card that read, ‘SEUNGRI is our Everysing’, showing support for SEUNGRI.

SEUNGRI attracted the fans with not only his vocals, but also his dance moves. From House Shuffle to Sports Dance, SEUNGRI performed various genres of dances. He also added acts and choreography which reminded viewers of a musical, providing a joyful experience for the audience. He also had a ‘DJ Time’. He remixed songs released by YG Entertainment including songs by WINNER, iKON, and BLACKPINK, exciting the crowd as if the concert scene was a club.

SEUNGRI did not perform a single song with duplicating moods, He raised the mood with his glamorous choreography, and attracted the audience utilizing his standing mic. He also displayed a different side of himself while collaborating with a female choreographer and displayed various colors of himself. The 2 hours were not enough to completely illustrate SEUNGRI’s charms.

As he concentrated more on singing and dancing rather than talking, he also revealed his potential as a solo artist. He bragged about the lights and sound system prepared by a credit card company which sponsored SEUNGRI’s concert. The phrase, “Which credit card do you use?”, which may feel a bit promotional became a humor when the phrase was passed on through SEUNGRI’s mouth.

SEUNGRI also talked to the audience while trying to pay attention as much as he can. Although he was alone, he also mentioned other members of BIGBANG frequently. His words that said, “I want to work hard as possible to reduce BIGBANG’s vacancy” did not come out of nowhere. He did not forget to express his gratitude towards the fans that showed steady love and support since the group made debut in 2006.

SEUNGRI hoped the event to be a “Joyous concert which the audience becomes reminiscent”. Just as he wished, the concert had lots to watch and experience.

SEUNGRI will continue his concert on Daegu EXCO and Busan BEXCO on August 15 and 19, respectively.

With his concert in Seoul, SEUNGRI will perform in Daegu EXCO and Busan BEXCO on the 15th and 19th respectively to meet Korean fans, and will start his tour in Japan.

Billboard: How Seungri Asserts K-Pop’s International Power in Political ‘Where R U From’ Video

 seungri-billboard.png

As the sole BIGBANG member currently not serving in South Korea’s mandatory military, Seungri’s musical comeback was set to make a big splash on the pop scene. While the message of the singer’s recently released “Where R U From” video has earned international attention for its parodying of Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un’s summit earlier this year, there’s also an empowering message about the growing, global influence of K-pop and one of its leading companies.

A CNN “Breaking News”–esque shot opens the video announcing “Representatives from each country entered the conference hall,” moving to Trump and Kim lookalikes shaking hands before Seungri himself riding in on a horse — a dark horse, at that — to enter the confab of nations featuring some of 2018’s biggest intercontinental players like the U.S., the U.K., China, India, France, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, North Korea and more. At the 1:10-minute mark Seungri struts into the conference, takes a seat at the table and sets down his nameplate not as his native South Korea, not even as Seungri, but as YG Entertainment — his longtime record label, management agency and entertainment brand that also houses the likes of Epik High, CL and BLACKPINK, among others.

While the South Korea has undoubtedly established itself as a major player on the worldwide political and economic scene, Seungri setting his place at the international table for YG Entertainment — which also boasts business in sports, fashion and cosmetics — is a statement on how the country’s pop culture has made it an undeniable global player.

Seungri continues to be the man in control of the video with imagery specifically referencing the K-pop world. While he playfully sings holding a bamboo shoot and boasts a furry black-and-white coat (seen at the 3:50 mark), Seungri makes many references to his “panda” or “baby panda” nickname that was given to him by BIGBANG fans due to the somewhat dark circles under his eyes.

Meanwhile, Korean comedian Yoo Byung Jae makes a cameo as Seungri’s BIGBANG band mate G-Dragon and one can YG Entertainment logo cleverly peppered throughout the visual. This particular decision emphasizes the confidence YG has in its global viewpoint, which isn’t far off considering it was the home that brought PSY to global attention via “Gangnam Style” (though the rapper exited the company after eight years in May), and holds records including the highest-charting K-pop girl group on Billboard’s main charts in BLACKPINK, the first K-pop girl group to hold a U.S. arena tour in now-disbanded 2NE1, among other firsts.

When the United States has its leader in an entrepreneur-turned-reality-star-turned-politician in 2018, a K-pop star proclaiming his country’s presence via the music and pop culture that’s led to chart-topping bands, sold-out world tours and thousands of diverse fans isn’t so wild. Seungri’s song’s title “Where R U From” makes this idea all the more relevant in that if someone says they are from South Korea, the world may find themselves more and more likely to first think about K-pop and the country’s pop-culture exports over anything political or international contentious.
