From “Lies” To “Loser”: BIGBANG’s Best Concepts Ever

On August 19, 2006, our world became significantly better. Mainly because BIGBANG made their debut in the K-pop world, taking it and our lives by storm. Although most of the members are in the military right now (with the exception of Seungri), it doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate their debut anniversary!

So, without further ado, here’s a celebration and a look at 13 of BIGBANG’s best concepts ever.

1. Partying concept

BIGBANG has done several music videos where they’re partying it up. It suits the BIGBANG image and it’s always a fun concept to watch them do in their music videos. The music video seems like they are filmed in the States and all the members look like they are living their life to the fullest. The backdrop of the city streets, desert, and beach basically embodies their essence, which we totally dig.

2. The “I Don’t Care” Attitude

This more recent music video and album displayed BIGBANG’s “I don’t care” attitude. They had expressed that they were having trouble figuring out the perfect song to promote for their MADE album, so they decided not to stress too much over it, which is how they came up with “FXXX It” and the concept in general. It somehow encapsulated them in a nutshell and was generally pretty perfect.

Even during their V Live, they brought their “Fxxx It” attitude.

3. Classic boy band dancing in the rain

Almost all of the popular K-pop groups have done concepts and music videos that involve rain. It’s like a K-pop necessity. It’s a concept that not only happened in the 2000s, but also in the ‘90s. This specific music video made it to this best concept list, because c’mon, who doesn’t want to see BIGBANG dancing soaking wet in the rain?

4. The K-drama music video

We love dramatic love stories when it comes to music videos. This concept was similar to “Haru” in that it involved a tumultuous love story, but this was a bit more dramatic as it resulted in finding out there was some sort of murder involved with the girl and her abusive ex-boyfriend. This concept is what really brought started the momentum of BIGBANG’s success, so it was obviously an image that the public loved.

5. Love triangle between members

With “Haru Haru,” the dramatic storyline continues. I really couldn’t write this list without adding this music video. Everything about it was pretty perfect, especially during the specific era when it was released. We loved music videos that told a story and this one was good. It involved a love triangle between the members, and although we don’t like seeing the members argue with each other, it’s dramatic and we love it.

6. Vulnerable bad boy

Although this is specifically a solo music video for Taeyang, it’s one that we can’t fail to mention. Taeyang made hearts throb with this vulnerable, lovesick concept. The whole “I’m in love with my best friends’ girlfriend/wife” was heartbreaking, and gave us even more reason to fall in love with him. The piano playing adds the icing on top of the cake. We wept for him.

7. The edgy K-pop idol with a chip on his shoulder

There were so many G-Dragon concepts throughout the years that slayed, and although it’s hard to choose, his “Crooked” concept was hands-down one of his all-time best. The smokey makeup, tattoos, and edgy fashion created an image that actually suited G-Dragon pretty well. It was like he was expressing a darker side of his personality, which we were obviously here for.

8. Emotionally vulnerable

BIGBANG always has a way of displaying a contrast of different images. Their party and bad boy image is a given, but then when they release such beautiful songs like, “Love Song,” it really makes us ir sensitive and emotional side. It’s a concept that I always dig and can never get sick of. Plus, they look amazing in those simple black suits!

9. Urban life

In my opinion, this concept, which BIGBANG has done a couple times throughout their music career, suits them the best. They seem most natural being in this urban city setting in fashion that they’d wear on any given day.

Here is the similar concept in their “Bad Boy” music video:

SO cool.

10. Futuristic revolution

There is a lot going on in this concept. It seems BIGBANG is part of a revolution and rebelling against those who don’t want to hear their music. With G-Dragon’s trendy long locks and T.O.P’s signature blue hair, we know they’re making a statement and it all fits so perfectly together. This song was a revolution, much like its concept as it’s considered a classic anthem in the K-pop world.

11. Humanism

BIGBANG really wore their heart on their sleeves for this concept. Maybe it’s because they’ve been around in the industry for so long and in the spotlight, but they really showcased their feelings about what it’s really like being in their shoes. It made us sympathize and realize how lonely they really must feel despite the fame and fortune.

12. Artsy Fartsy

This whole concept seemed like a glimpse into how T.O.P would world. If I wouldn’t have known better, I would have thought he conceptualized this whole music video from beginning to end. It’s artsy, creative, and leaves you thinking, “What the heck did I just watch?” And although it was bizarre, we really couldn’t stop watching it.

13. BIGBANG forever

The fun and casual vibe of this whole music video gives warm fuzzies. We know that the members all consider each other family and it seems nothing can break them apart. Especially during this time where most of the members are in the army, it’s nice to m having fun and being their goofy selves. I’m looking forward to seeing more concepts like this one soon!

BIGBANG’s Seungri looked back at his spending habits on tvN’s “Salty Tour.”

On August 18, Seungri joined the cast as a guest during their trip to Xiamen, China.

Before the tour began, he said to the members, “I used to hold ultra luxurious parties, inviting foreign guests and famous chefs in the past, but I’m trying to do [the tour] with a humble mind.”

Later that day, Seungri looked uneasy about the fact that Park Na Rae had to sleep in the punishment room after she exceeded the budget by 23.5 yuan (approximately $3.42). He spent the night calculating numbers and worked hard to plan a budget-friendly tour.

He confessed to Jung Joon Young, “This was the most difficult variety program I’ve been on after I debuted in BIGBANG. If you don’t pay attention, that’s what you become. I got shocked.”

In the morning, the tour began with breakfast at a trendy part of town similar to Korea’s Garosu-gil. One cup of coffee and a slice of cake each cost around 30 yuan (approximately $4.36) which was also equal to around 5,000 won.

Park Na Rae said, “The coffee is too light,” and the other members also complained about the small amount of food. In an attempt to cheer them up, Seungri danced for the members.

When Seungri said that 5,000 won (approximately $4.47) coffees and desserts were expensive, Jung Joon Young commented, “It’s the first time I’ve heard Seungri say that 5,000 won is expensive.” Seungri responded, “While planning the tour and checking each and every single thing, I self-reflected about the life that I lived.”

During his interview, Seungri continued, “The thought I had while doing ‘Salty Tour’ was, if I could be happy with this amount of money, what was all of the money that I spent until now? What’s worse is, even after I spent large amounts of money, there were many times where I wasn’t that happy. I can definitely feel happy with small things. It made me look back at my past expenses and self-reflect on the ways I spent money. I had many different kinds of thoughts.”

On the August 18 episode of tvN’s “Salty Tour,” BIGBANG’s Seungri joined the cast on a trip to Xiamen, China.

During the episode, Park Na Rae, who was in charge of planning their activities for the day, took the group to Xiamen University’s Furong Tunnel. When they arrived, there was a huge crowd in front of the tunnel, making it impossible for the cast and crew to film there, and Park Na Rae became flustered as she found herself at a complete loss for what to do. She admitted, “I didn’t know what to say [to the others]. It was hot and humid, and there were so many people, so I became frustrated as well.”

However, Seungri quickly came to the rescue and helped Park Na Rae during her unexpected crisis. Acting as a member of the crew, he personally asked the people in and around the tunnel for permission to film. Thanks to Seungri, they were able to smoothly wrap up their filming at the tunnel, and Park Na Rae commented, “I felt so sorry and grateful [to Seungri] at the same time.”

Later that night, the group headed to a local pub near their hotel. While they were enjoying their drinks, a few guys approached Seungri, and to his surprise, they were his friends who lived in Xiamen. Dazed and surprised, the idol said, “I really didn’t know [they were here]. I was shocked to run into my friends. My friends run a club and a restaurant. I didn’t know they owned this pub, too.”

Seungri then caught his friends off-guard by asking the prices of the items on the menu. He explained, “I’ve never asked about prices before.” Thanks to the generosity of Seungri’s friends, the cast ended up enjoying some small but meaningful free services.

BIGBANG’s new concert DVD is seeing great results!

Released on August 17, the group’s “BIGBANG Japan Dome Tour 2017 – Last Dance – : The Final” topped both Oricon’s daily DVD as well as Blu-Ray charts (dated August 16).

As suggested by its title, the live DVD & Blu-Ray specifically features the final concert of BIGBANG’s Japan dome tour that took place on December 24, 2017 in Osaka. It features backstage footage as well as interviews with each of the BIGBANG members in a documentary format.

Their “Last Dance” tour itself was notable in the fact it was the last tour before members G-Dragon, Taeyang, and Daesung enlisted. It also marked BIGBANG’s fifth consecutive year to hold a dome tour in Japan, a first for a foreign act, and they saw 696,000 concertgoers in total across 14 concerts.

Meanwhile, member Seungri recently embarked on his own solo tour in Japan, which kicked off on August 11-12 in Chiba. He will also be performing at music festival “a-nation 2018” on August 18 as a solo artist for the first time.

MAMAMOO’s Hwasa revealed her favorite BIGBANG member.

On the August 13 episode of JTBC’s “Please Take Care of My Refrigerator,” Hwasa revealed that she has been a huge fan of BIGBANG ever since middle school. She shared, “My first and last concert was BIGBANG’s.”

With much anticipation, BIGBANG’s Seungri asked who her favorite member was, and with a shy smile, Hwasa answered, “I don’t like just one person in the group. I like everyone.” However, due to Seungri’s persistent persuasion, Hwasa finally admitted, “Please don’t misunderstand. I’m really forcing myself to make a choice here. I like Taeyang the most.”

Not the type to give up so easily, Seungri immediately asked who her second favorite member is, even adding the fact that Taeyang is married already. Unfortunately, Hwasa chose G-Dragon as her next favorite BIGBANG member. On the bright side, she chose him as her third favorite member, but Seungri didn’t seem too satisfied as he half-heartedly thanked her.

Seungri made a comeback last month with his title track “1, 2, 3!”
