The Evolution Of BIGBANG Throughout The Years

1. BIGBANG Throughout The Years

The only group to ever take home the MAMA Award for Artist of the Year more than once, BIGBANG just took it home again for the 3rd time. We have watched them grow — witnessing their music mature with them throughout the years.

They have come a long way since their debut in 2006. Their 9 year run may possibly hold some of the most inspirational and successful stories in the history of K-Pop. But what is the key to their success?

We have to all agree that BIGBANG is comprised of talented individuals. They are one of the few idols that take control in the composition of their music (a trend we're beginning to see in our rookie groups,) and it is apparent that they possess the talent and passion that most groups do not have. Their strengths lie in their ability to adapt to the ever-changing music industry — allowing them to endure the storm of time as others fell.

Topping charts and breaking records, BIGBANG has made history with nearly every single come-back. Let's go back in time and witness once again the unfolding of this legendary group.

MAMA 2015 Live Review: Best Performances Of The Night

No Plans For Park Bom Comeback, Says YG

(Photo : MAMA 2015)

Hong Kong is reeling from the stunning performances delivered by BIGBANG, CL, 2NE1, EXO and PSY at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA).

The ceremony promptly kicked off at 7 p.m., to a packed audience at AsiaWorld-Center.

Girls' Generation and TaeTiSeo (TTS) member, Taeyeon, flexed her vocals in the opening, on her solo hit, "I." Taeyeon delivered one of the most exceptional performances of the evening, as she filled the vast space of the Hong Kong stadium with her stirring voice.

MAMA 2015 was like a YG Family concert.

From BIGBANG to 2NE1, iKON and PSY, YG dominated the killer performances of MAMA 2015.

YG's latest male group, iKON, ushered in the second hour with their powerful stage which was highlighted by "Rhythm Ta." During "Rhythm Ta," the rafters at AsiaWorld-Expo shook for the first time.

K-hip-hop continued to show its strength.

This year's ceremony continued to emphasize the transition of K-pop towards hip-hop and electronic dance. This was exemplified by performances from "Show Me the Money" and "Unpretty Rapstar" alums Lil Boi, Basick, Yezi, and Truedy.

One of the best collaborative performances was executed by GOT7 and BTS, who previously wowed audiences at KCON 2015 in Los Angeles. The cross-agency stage highlighted the performativity of BTS and the acrobatics of GOT7.

While Park Jin Young (J.Y. Park) may have delivered a sexy set that was slightly cringe-worthy, audiences were left aghast by the surprise return of 2NE1, following two solo songs from CL.

2NE1 is back and better than ever.

Cheers resounded throughout AsiaWorld-Expo as CL took the stage, but even the craftiest netizens who camped out at the airport for arrivals were surprised by the appearance of the full lineup of 2NE1.

CL took the stage to deliver a montage of her best songs, including the premiere stage of her latest track, "Hello Bitches." Choreographer Parris Goebel and her dance troupe backed CL for killer dance moves, making the song even more compelling than it already was.

2NE1 brought the house down, as stunned MAMA attendees witnessed the comeback stage of the renowned K-pop quartet.

The audience was awestruck when Dara emerged from below the stage, followed by Minzy and Bom. 2NE1 lit up AsiaWorld-Center with their classic songs "Fire" and "I Am the Best."

One of the most interesting moments of the evening occurred during their stage of "I Am the Best," as the predominantly Chinese-speaking crowd sang along with the words, verbatim.

The audience came to MAMA to support a handful of groups, but most were there for BIGBANG and EXO.

VIPs in the crowd went crazy when BIGBANG received the award for Best Music Video, but they were even more enthusiastic about the group's live performance.

"Bae Bae" and "Bang Bang Bang" were the biggest crowd pleasers. Their fans screamed the lyrics, throughout the performance and were entertained by their audience interaction throughout the night.

EXO's best stages of the evening were "Call Me Baby" and "Lightsaber." They even broke out the mythical "Star Wars" swords for their performance, unlike the video for the special release, proving that the song could have longevity beyond serving as a tie-in for the popular action film franchise.

PSY is truly a global sensation.

Like it or not, PSY is one of the most globally recognizable forces in Korean pop. His presence on the world stage was solidified with his closing performance of "Daddy" and his acclaimed 2012 hit, "Gangnam Style." Rather than escape the viral track, he brilliantly embraced it, for MAMA 2015.

The 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards were truly a sight to behold, with the live performances of the biggest selling artists in K-pop making the event one that every fan of the genre should consider attending.

BIGBANG's Taeyang Addresses Artists Leaving Mnet Asian Music Awards Before 'Artist Of The Year' Win

BIGBANG MAMA 2015 Award

(Photo : Mnet)

BIGBANG's wins at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards are not as happy as they should be.

On Dec. 2, BIGBANG attended the award show with many other iconic and up-and-coming K-pop acts. Over the course of the night, BIGBANG walked away with four of the awards, including the coveted title of Artist of the Year. However, the reception was bittersweet as almost all of the other artists in attendance appeared to have left the ceremony before BIGBANG could give their acceptance speech.

Member Taeyang did not let the incident go unnoticed. "It's unfortunate that many singers did not stay to congratulate us on receiving this award," Taeyang mentioned in the acceptance speech according to MyDaily. "It would have been nice to celebrate with everyone. I hope we can bring you a more wonderful stage next year."

In fact, only China's top star, and the award announcer Chow Yun Fat and rookie group Monsta X stuck around not only for BIGBANG's "Artist of the Year" acceptance but PSY's first comeback performance for his latest singles "Napal Baji" and "Daddy." Fans were shocked to see that even fellow YG Entertainment artists iKON and girl group 2NE1, who made a surprise appearance, were also not in the audience.

After the show, BIGBANG's Taeyang and Seungri took to social media to thank those who did stay for their acceptance, specifically addressing Monsta X.

Who Had the Most Performance Airtime at the 2015 MAMA?

Who Had the Most Performance Airtime at the 2015 MAMA?

The 2015 MAMA was a playground for the big three — YG Entertainment, SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment — again this year, according to a report by TV Daily.

So much so, that some are asking whether or not they had too much of the focus of the night, considering the fact that Mnet, according to the report by TV Daily, did not even invite some of the other award nominees to attend the show.

The difference in presence can clearly be seen comparing performance times for the agencies and artists.

BIGBANG_7Out of the big three, YG by far had the most performance air time during the show. Out of the total performance time of 1 hour and 48 minutes, YG artists made up 40.35 percent of that, with 43 minutes and 35 seconds on stage. Although, if the Mel0n Music Awards held earlier this year were any indication, this is no surprise.

Here is the YG time on stage broken up by artist:

BIGBANG — 12:10

PSY — 11:05

2NE1 (including CL’s solo) — 10:45

iKON — 9:35

exo lightsaber 2015 mama

The next of the big three is SM Entertainment, rocking the stage for 23.54 percent of the total performance time, with 23 minutes, 25 seconds on stage.

SM artists’ time on stage:

EXO — 11:11

f(x) — 6:15

SHINee — 5:46

Taeyeon — 3:13

JYP_1

JYP, with just two artists hitting the stage, including head honcho Park Jin Young himself, clocked in at 10 minutes and 51 seconds, which was 10.05 percent of the total performance time.

JYP artists’ time on stage:

Park Jin Young — 6:15

GOT7 — 4:36

Everyone else combined made up the remaining 26.06 percent of the show’s performances: Amoeba Culture’s Zion.T, YMC Entertainment’s Jessi, Cube’s HyunA, Brand New Music’s San E, Happy Robot Record’s KOXX, BigHit’s BTS, and the artists from Mnet’s “Superstar K,” “Show Me the Money,” and “Unpretty Rapstar.”

What do you think? Is it natural for the big three to dominate the airtime — they are the “big three,” after all — or should the awards better represent all artists?

Netizens berate idols for not being present during BIGBANG’s “Artist of the Year” acceptance at “2015 MAMA”

A remark from BIGBANG‘s Taeyang during the group’s “Artist of the Year” acceptance speech at the 2015 MAMA has gained a lot of attention, prompting netizens to berate idols who left the show early.

The 2015 MAMA took place on December 2nd in Hong Kong at the Asia World Expo with the Red Carpet event taking place between 6pm and 8pm KST and the main event and ceremony scheduled to take place at 8pm KST until midnight KST.

With the final award, “Artist of the Year,” being the final award given out, BIGBANG was announced to have won this prestigious award and went up to accept their award. However, those watching the ceremony have noticed that very few artists remained with the majority of them having left the awards early.

Taeyang said, “I think it maybe hard for BIGBANG to show up as a complete unit at MAMA for a long time. We were happy to be able to show such amazing stages at MAMA until now. It was an honor to be able to be a part of MAMA and perform what we wanted on stage. We are thankful to receive so muany amazing awards. One thing that I wish could have been different is the fact that I wish it could have been a festival to the end but many artists are now absent. We will come back to all of you with awesome songs and performances.”

His comment pointing out that not many celebrities had remained until the end of the show with MONSTA X the only idols left at their seats has brought about much criticism from netizens who agreed with Taeyang and commented that it was extremely rude for said idols to have left early with much of these geared towards SM Entertainment artists.

However, as some pointed out, the majority of the artists, including iKON, who had left the ceremony early had either been backstage for an interview with Mnet (EXO) or had to catch a flight back to South Korea (or to Prague in the case of SHINee and Red Velvet for the Czech Hallyu Wave Concert) to carry out their other schedules.

From TV Report via Naver:

[+481, -27] I can understand why BIGBANG is such a long lasting group…When they went up to get their award….all the chairs around them were empty….I was watching it live and I was so surprised, but BIGBANG stayed till the end applauding and bowing to everyone…They have every right to say such things. They have at least 5 years over everyone else too.

[+409, -22] BIGBANG and even PSY was there and people were so rude to leave before them. Monsta X and Chow Yun Fat were so nice to stay. Monsta X fighting!

[+333, -19] There’s a reason groups stay popular for a long time. How could everyone else leave as soon as their turn is over…

[+329, -19] BIGBANG, MONSTA X, I hope you continue to prosper!!!!!

From Newsen via Nate:

[+389, -70] The only award show where all the artists leave before it’s even over.

[+377, 59] Wow…I was watching PSY and all the artists were gone.. ???? ??? ??? ? ??

[+372, -61] Pfft there were so many artists who didn’t do anything but applaud for 4 hours. Blame MAMA for delaying things for over an hour.

What Does Taeyang’s Mysterious Comment at 2015 MAMA Mean?

What Does Taeyang’s Mysterious Comment at 2015 MAMA Mean?

BIGBANG, who won the Artist of the Year Award at the 2015 MAMA, against EXO, Zion.T, SHINee, and Girls’ Generation, had some interesting things to say during their speech.

Taeyang said, “It might be difficult for all five of us to be at a MAMA awards ceremony for a while. It has been an honor to be able to showcase the stages that we want through MAMA, and thank you for the award.” It seems that he may have been hinting at the fact that many BIGBANG members are approaching the deadlines for serving their mandatory military service.

Taeyang also added, “It is really too bad that not that many artists are here. I had hoped that MAMA would be more festive than this until the end,” showing his disappointment with singers having left early.
