G-Dragon Labeled “Star Attraction” of Chanel’s Couture Show by New York Times

G-Dragon Labeled “Star Attraction” of Chanel’s Couture Show by New York Times

Chanel’s runway shows always attract the top celebrities, and the 2016 couture show was no different. Held at the Grand Palais in Paris, this year’s stage included models Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, and Soo Joo Park, while Cara Delevingne, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Diane Kruger watched from the front row. However, no one turned more heads than G-Dragon, who strolled out nonchalantly to claim his seat, bedecked in a Chanel couture suit and oversized black fur hat. (G-Dragon, of course, has a longstanding relationship with Chanel, and can often be found in the front row of their shows during Fashion Week.)

The New York Times, explaining how G-Dragon’s “chameleon style, kaleidoscopic hair shades, and catchy songs” have made him an internationally acclaimed superstar, labeled him as the “star attraction” of Chanel’s couture show. They also conducted a short interview with him after the show ended.

G-Dragon expressed interest in designing clothes only if he could deliver something new to the table… but also showed a sharp understanding of potential opportunities. “I would only create clothes myself if I felt I could do something really different — create a new style subculture for my generation and that is very ambitious. What is more interesting to me is how all my worlds appear to be colliding at the moment — music, film, fashion and art — you can be one man, but be a force that combines all of those sectors together. There are business opportunities to be found within that.”

And what else does G-Dragon plan to do in Paris? Visit art galleries! “I now know that inspirations must come from everywhere. The sights you can find here in Paris are second to none.”

Meet the Korean pop star, G Dragon, who caused a stir at Chanel

The front row at Chanel’s Haute Couture show today was filled with Karl’s usual favourites, including Diane Kruger, Cara Delevingne and Clémence Poésy. But there was one star getting tagged in even more tweets and Instagram posts than Cara Delevingne and her dog Leo – K Pop star G-Dragon.

You might not have heard of G-Dragon, but the South Korean rapper is arguably the biggest Asian artist in the world, with a fiercely loyal social following. His fan base could take on the Beliebers in a game of 'first to go viral' - and win. The 25-year-old, whose real name is Kwon Ji-yong, sent fans into a tagging frenzy today when he was pictured at Chanel’s Couture show in a navy suit covered in Chanel brooches, which he paired with a furry Chanel trapper hat.

His fan base is rapidly extending way beyond Asia; Kanye West is said to be a fan of his work and he has recorded a song with Justin Bieber. Karl Lagerfeld is one of his main supporters and will always give him a front row invitation to the Chanel show and, of course, a head-to-toe Chanel outfit to wear.

He isn’t new to the street style scene and has been sat front row at the likes of Saint Laurent and Lanvin for years, wearing anything from pink glitter Giuseppe Zanotti brogues to Chanel tweed women’s jackets. With 7.6 million followers on Instagram, the lead singer of the Korean band BIGBANG is an incredibly powerful force in the industry and in usual Kate Middleton fashion, he causes pieces to sell out moments after he’s spotted wearing them. But he doesn’t just borrow looks from designers; it's thought that he spends spend serious money expanding his fashion collection.

G-Dragon is becoming a real fashion week character, as  BOF wrote last year: “When Karl Lagerfeld included G-Dragon in a group photo at the latest Chanel couture show alongside international A-listers like Kristen Stewart and Julianne Moore, it helped elevate the Korean rapper’s status as an ‘it boy’ even higher.”

G-Dragon said in an interview with Complex Magazine about his success in America: “Just to put it real simply, [American tastemakers] are taking notice because I’m doing well. If I didn’t do well, they wouldn’t even have noticed me or cared. So I don’t put too much meaning behind it.”

[VOGUE] ... Louis Garrel and K-pop star T.O.P also distinguished themselves from the pack

How A$AP Rocky, Rami Malek, and Travis Scott Brought Their A-Game to Paris Men’s Fashion Week’s Front Rows

TOP_Vogue_Jan_2016.jpg

The men’s shows have wrapped in Paris, where they ushered in a new sense of modern formality. But while suiting proved to be a popular option for lots of fashionable front row attendees, so was a fresh take on streetwear, where classic tailoring met athletic influence. The City of Light brought out the boldest names in music, television, and film, all showcasing their own individual tastes and flair on the front  row.

Some gentlemen opted to return to an Ocean’s Eleven–esque vibe with natty, navy suits punctuated with fun accessories. A$AP Rocky offset his version with a collarless shirt and hybrid mountain shoes whose laces perfectly coordinated with the toggles on his slicker. Also forgoing a tie was Jurassic World’s Nick Robinson, who put a youthful spin on the style with cool white sneakers. Meanwhile, Louis Garrel and K-pop star T.O.P also distinguished themselves from the pack—the French film actor accented his demure suit with a printed tie, and the Korean musician added a floral boutonniere and white, thick-soled monk straps to lighten up his look. Mr. Robot actor Rami Malek amped up the modern glamour of a dark shirt in an appealing take on a classic windowpane suit.

However, it wasn’t all buttoned-up in the front rows. Streetwear, albeit with a refined approach, dominated on everyone from Alexandre Arnault to Victor Cruz. Arnault elevated the schoolboy-favorite toggle coat with a tweedy material while keeping cool in skinny trousers and pirate black Yeezy 350s. The Revenant’s Will Poulter worked a similar palette, while focusing on clean lines and tailored outerwear paired with fresh kicks. Showing how to rock the new look of the bomber were Chinese singer and actor Jing Bo Ran and Creed’s Michael B. Jordan. Both donned different versions from Louis Vuitton, with Jing opting for a satin, embroidered jacket while Jordan went for a sportier approach.

But leave it to Travis Scott and Victor Cruz to truly up the ante on winter style. As the East Coast braved Winter Storm Jonas, the two gents pulled out posh puffers and joined Riccardo Tisci’s squad. Scott’s star motif reinforced the notion of his A-list status, while Cruz showed his stars and stripes in a one-note look. With the couture collections just beginning in Paris, it appears the ladies are facing some stiff competition from the gents.

BIGBANG’s “Fantastic Baby” Sets Record With 200 Million YouTube Views

BIGBANG’s “Fantastic Baby” Sets Record With 200 Million YouTube Views

BIGBANG‘s 2012 hit “Fantastic Baby” recently hit a major milestone, earning the group the honor of surpassing 200 million views on YouTube.

BIGBANG recently reached another goal just last week, as “BANG BANG BANG” reached 100 million YouTube views on January 19. They’re also only the second Korean artist to ever hit the 200 million view mark, following label mate PSY (whose video for “Gangnam Style” currently stands at 2.5 billion views, and is YouTube’s most viewed video in history).

Few other Korean artists have reached the 100 million mark – Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, HyunA, and 2NE1, to name a few – but BIGBANG is the first male idol group to make it past 200 million views. Congratulations, BIGBANG!

[NY Times Interview] G-Dragon in Paris, Another Appearance on Chanel’s Front Row

By ELIZABETH PATON

JANUARY 26, 2016

PARIS — The latest stage of the Asian invasion of the Paris couture season occurred at the Chanel show, held at the Grand Palais on Tuesday morning.
While the creative director Karl Lagerfeld’s muses remained out in force (the model and actress Cara Delevingne with her puppy Leo and the actresses Diane Kruger and Clémence Poésy), the star attraction proved to be G-Dragon, a South Korean pop star-turned-rapper and aspiring fashion entrepreneur who set Twitter alight with his naval-captain-inspired Chanel couture suit, flawless foundation and gigantic black fur hat.
A former teenage sensation and leader of the K-Pop boyband BIGBANG, G-Dragon (whose real name is Kwon Ji-yong) has been a front-row fixture at recent Chanel shows the world over, from Dallas to Paris. His chameleon style, kaleidoscopic hair shades and catchy songs have won him an army of fans in the millions in Asia, especially in his home country. (This no doubt explains part of his appeal for Chanel, who has identified South Korea as a leading luxury growth market.)

“Of course I wanted to come to the couture shows again, it is an amazing spectacle,” he said after the models had left the runway. “Since getting to know Karl, I have learned a huge amount from him and his work. I also like that he is a man whose image is incredibly distinctive — you hear his name and you can picture him immediately in your mind. I find that very inspiring.”
G-Dragon, who said he has made several investments in Asian fashion companies in recent months, emphasized that, while he had aspirations for the fashion world, they did not involve being a designer. “I would only create clothes myself if I felt I could do something really different — create a new style subculture for my generation and that is very ambitious,” he said. “What is more interesting to me is how all my worlds appear to be colliding at the moment — music, film, fashion and art — you can be one man, but be a force that combines all of those sectors together. There are business opportunities to be found within that.”
On previous visits to Paris, G-Dragon said, he had focused on shopping, but this time he planned to go to art galleries. “I now know that inspirations must come from everywhere,” he said, tilting his head toward Chanel’s artificial bright blue sky, part of the show set. “The sights you can find here in Paris are second to none.”
